Title: Refurbish anniversary RX2's
Post by: stainesy on 18 August 2013, 15:34
Ok managed to get myself a nice clean standard anni 8v.
In mystic blue. Think that's the colour. You know the bluey purple one

Anyway the wheels are corroded and peeling.
Want to split them and refurb them. Even use new bolts like some nice gold or coloured ones.

How do I go about splitting them and putting them back together?
Also what bolts do I need and can I get funky diferant bolts? Lol

It's not the most fun job, just gotta go for it, get the appropriate bit that fits perfectly into bolt heads, (cant remember exact size) give em a good tap to break the thread lock and undo em all, hopefully none will snap, which is fairly common depending how corroded they are, I managed to do mine fairly easy and I'm inexperienced.. Then I turned em round and used a piece of wood and a hammer and knocked the centres out.. Came out again fairly easy..

Good luck! :)

Hell of a hard and expensive job if done correctly. How many cars you buy each year? Lol

Yeah the bolts will cost a fortune if u change them!! I split em then had em powder coated, didn't cost millions but does start to mount up..
I used cas coatings in Leeds/Bradford I've heard mixed reviews but there were no probs with me, I dropped off, 3 days later collected, all done...

Very easy to do stainsey,as said make sure to give each one a good tap to break the thread lock plus corrosion, which shouldn't be to hard for you, dont break the wheel  :grin:i kept each centre with each barrel cos im like that lol, make sure to run a tap through all the threads before rebuild standard m7 iirc,i didn't torque mine back up just don't over tighten them! ,use thread lock.

Sweet cheers. I will try not to break them.
Had a look at the door hinge on rehab today and realised I have actually broken the bottom hinge bracket
Don't care now tho as will be steeling the coilys and other good bits for the anni now and breaking rehab.
Including selling the Toledo half leather interior.

use the right thread lock, or the next poor sod wont be able to get them out.....
Or use 638 for that specific purpose
