It's about f**king time the police had the power to put these kind of fines and points on people.

There are too many people who drive like dicks and get away with it. I CAN NOT stand people on their mobiles, it's the stupidest f**king thing I see people do. How they think it's ok is beyond me.

Middle lane hoggers and people who cut you up are just as bad. The only people complaining about these changes are the people who know they will get caught.

I look forward to the first nobhead posting on here about how he just received a £100 fine and 3 points for driving like a douche.

More reason for them to be on the motorway now with these new fines.

Around Manchester I can't remember the last time i DIDN'T see a cop on the motorway.  The stretch near my house there are always two parked up.  The middle lane rule is going to be very subjective and hard to enforce I think.

BTW, these two fine-able offences are complete bollocks.

Overtaking and pushing into a queue of traffic
Being in the wrong lane and pushing into a queue on a roundabout

There's nothing wrong with overtaking as long as you've not an idiot about it.  And being in the wrong lane happens, we're all done it, the problem is dicks not letting you in.

So if you are in the middle lane and all the idiots are lane hogging the outside lane all suddenly brake hard and my way ahead is clear who is in the wrong if I dont brake and "overtake" them in the middle lane.

iirc from my driving test days, there are only 2 or 3 occasions where you can overtake vehicles in the outer lane..........

1. If the vehicles in the outer lane are turning (i.e. traffic lights)
2. If the flow in the outer lane is stationary/slowing down (like your example)
3. (Can't remember !!)

These rules may have changed in the past 18 years, however !

I was under the impression that you were not allowed to "deliberately" undertake. i.e. drive from lane 3 into lane 1 to undertake a lane 2 hogger (and most probably get further up the line in lane 3 at the same time)

If you are in an otherwise empty lane one and there is a car hogging lane 2, I'm pretty sure that you can undertake him as long as you maintain your constant speed. That is far safer than going out into lane 3 then cutting his nose off on your way back to lane 1. (we've all done it)

Agreed. Silly manoeuvers like that are illegal, but I was trying to provide answers for when overtaking on the inside lane is legal (regardless of on motorway or around town etc). And was desperately racking my mind from the period when I studied for my driving test

If I'm doing a constant speed in a lane and someone to my right is driving slower I just over take them.  Fault lies with them for not moving when they had the opportunity.

Me thinks that this is a bit of a 'grey area'. It would all depend on actual situation at the time, but I also think that this is one of the issues that this new law is trying to assist with.

Basically, and as I was taught...................stay left unless overtaking..............do not drive too close to car in front................no usage of mobile devices whilst driving etc etc.
Saying this though, I still see loads of drivers using mobile phones (both talking and texting), so not sure if the authorities can clamp down on the new rulings as they struggle with the phone one !

Long overdue.  Although the fine for being on the phone isn't enough of a deterrent. You still see people trying hide their phone on their lap and all you see is one hand on the wheel and eyes down. Idiots.

What gets me is the amount of drivers of high end cars that drive with their phones to their ears. They have got bluetooth, so why not use it?

Also with very basic bluetooth devices available from as little as £20, there is no excuse. I know that you can't dial from these without holding the phone, but at least you can answer a call if you really must.

Was surprises me is how people need all these laws. Surely common sense dictates what not to do while handling what could be potentially a deadly weapon. I was undertaken on the motorway by a fat baldy bar steward yesterday. Pointlessly may I add as he still couldn't squeeze his way into the fast lane and I overtook him 30 seconds later. Obviously has some sort of of mental health issue.

YES !!!
Thank you Dubs & Dragonflea

I completely agree with both and its so frustrating seeing drivers doing these things (and we know that they are i.e. texting) and so dangerous.

For me, its both texting and talking on phone (blatantly holding phone to ear) that irks me. Especially on difficult or winding roads and/or bad conditions

all them new laws are about getting more money out off drivers and in to government pockets! yes we all moan about middle lane hoggers but we all do it anyway. and we still get where we are going. I can see a lot off accidents because of these new rules. there will constantly be cars pulling out from left lane to middle lane and from right lane to middle lane and that is not a good thing. oh and how big does the gap between two cars in the left lane have to be for you to have to pull in during overtaking both off them???

and as for people using their mobile while driving. they should have their license lost for a year.

Think you should get points as well as a fine. You need to threaten people's license's to help improve their ways

That and the driving test needs to be harder and incorporate all aspects of driving. How many of you had lessons at night for example........

If im honest this does raise a few question, I.E I was always told on motorways, you stay left and if overtaking do it only in the right hand lanes I.E 2 & 3. (on the basis on a 3 lane motorway) but on normal roads such with two lanes you can undertake if the cars in the outta lane are driving below the limit. What I am slightly wondering is, all to often, cars travelling in lane 1 do 40-60mph which is fine because I generally cruise around 50-65 to see how high i can get my MPG marker lol
However I do find on occasions that I will encounter a large line of traffic travelling well under 50mph sometimes upto 6-11 cars/vans/trucks
So if I was to overtake these then tuck back into lane 1 when it is safe to do so, due to me being within lane 2/3 for a long period of time would this infact be classed as "lane hogging"
Also I totally agree that I still see many people on there phones while driving this needs to stop all to often my horn has had to wake a few day dreaming drivers that are more focused on there phonecall than the road.
They have, however missed a vital yet important one, all to often I see women doing their makeup while driving, surely this deserves a fine also?

This whole thing depends how it is enforced.  The big problem is that a lot of the enforcement is subjective.

If the notices are enforced reasonably then it won't be a problem.  If coppers decide to use them as a revenue generator, then the most important element of the whole situation is how to effectively challenge one of the notices, if you think it is unreasonable.  I would imagine PEPIPOO are all over this already.

I think it is unlikely this will cause more accidents.

I did, and bad weather and motorway  Although that was the advance driving corse after I passed and got me 50% off my insurance :smug:

My house mate in Oz has just been fined for speeding at 10km/h over the limit and got a $1000 fine and 6 demerit points, you get 12 point before your licence is taken off you and its double points and fine on any bank holiday weekend! So you can guess what all the cops are doing then!!!

I was driving up the M40 on Sunday. Some people are taking the whole get back into the left hand lane to extremes. The amount times I saw overtaking cars cutting back into to the safe space that the overtakee had left in front of him. It was like being in France.

It's a load of bull, just more money, whats the success rate of the offence of using a mobile phone and getting to court? Merely 50% it wastes more police money than it brings in when they enforce it from when I worked for the magistrate courts.

What about people being up you ass to pressure you to go faster, people not letting you in, people in the outer lanes forcing you to undertake, to many variables its nonsense, its yourself that will get caught out and not the morons.

Going to west country I see fast drivers weaving right to left and back again cars in all lanes slamming brakes on as drivers are more unpredictable and move over more then suddenly not matching speeds and moving out again?

I just think a lot of drivers on the road need to reliase that they are not the only ones there, especially when it comes to Mways. Like, some tool sitting in the middle or fast lane, there is just no need for it, as we all agree on. Not sure how much of a difference a £100 fine will make  :undecided:

This topic is so subjective to different situations and the different police will think and act differently.

ti have 1 thing to say about this. people have been driving on motorways for many years without any serious bother. now we have a country in financial meltdown and all off a sudden peoples driving is under the scope. revenue!

You've not noticed all the crashes and subsequent closures then, the general standard of terrible driving (admittedly this tends to be more of a South East England problem) and complete disregard of other motorists.

Motorway driving needs more pro-active policing rather than unmarked cars driving around looking for people to fine. It's amazing how well the driving standards raise when there is a marked patrol car nearby :)

Hmmmm, situation here, if I undertake a middle lane hogger ( not fast! ) just steady. Who will get the £100 fine?

Also anyone who uses brakes on the motorway (brake happy) should get the fine too. IF YOU NEED TO BRAKE YOUR TOO f**kING CLOSE TO THE CAR INFRONT. Keep your distance! simples!

Bluewater junctions a pain, I have to merge on at ebbsfleet and for some reason the clowns there just cant read the road, regardless if I'm on a bike or in a car.

Oh and sometimes you get a clown, that dude on a pushbike, god do I hate him, yes its an A road, but its got a considerable up hill gradient, with a 70mph speed limit and 4 lanes. Please bellend if you see him, mow him down

They shouldn't bother fining careless drivers. Just rip up their licence with no chance of getting back on the road. That will soon change peoples attitude.
