Can anyone spot a potential mod for the GTI in this picture? :lipsrsealed:

Looks so much nicer with the inner Us lit as well.
-
I have a feeling there might be a bulb carrier in the GTI ones, maybe just need an led or could even just be coding?
Hmmm...... :smug:
-
Do we honestly want to be staring at pics of the new R when we've all just ordered GTI/GTD's?
-
Could be something that can be activated, who knows?!
-
Well spotted Jimbo!
Having both parts of the light unit activated kinda makes the car look wider, and a bit meaner. I do hope its something we can tinker with in VAGCOM later on.

Lol! Can't really see it tbf!

Thanks - that 300 they put up with the teaser has to be 300 hp - very impressive, same as the Audi S3 engine from what I am reading on VWVortex. Can't wait to see the Frankfurt rollout.

Imagine the delays on getting one of these.  :rolleye  Buildweek 51 in 2015

Your probably looking at 2016 delivery date for one of these!

I hope so. Could be in the market for one at that point

Beat me to that one! :D

I doubt that very much. They've clearly finished the design and done a lot of the set up testing with the new body. They are hardly going to lose sales for 3 years delaying the release. It will be out by late next year (later as usual for NA). Here's hoping they add a nice ediff to the package this time.

I think he was joking. I'm sure it will here at some point next year

Yeah they won't delay the release... it's the build and delivery we're not so sure about!

Flying back to blighty tonight, so I'll decide tomorrow I think. I have an offer of another M135i with even better spec than the black one now. Same as GTI i have on order except no reverse cam or sunroof, but can have it this week for £1.5k less than the GTI. Emotionally I don't want to "cancel" an order i have placed but the M is making me feel excited and the GTI is not. It's VWs fault not the car of course.
The one sticking point is if I do cancel the decision is pretty much irreversible due to starting a huge wait over again and without the rear cam. But I think if I do pull the plug in a couple of days I'll forget any doubts as I drive away with 320 horses. Like I say I'll think it over on the flight home and make a decision tomorrow.
I will miss this forum if i go beemer however!
-
I know it sounds pedantic, but the lack of reverse cam alone would be enough to make me stick. Not sure I'd want 320 horses and rear wheel drive come the cold winter months either. It's a tough one mate - apart from the power and slightly cheaper price, is it the immediate availability that's drawing you in? Maybe if it didn't look so ugly I'd think a bit differently?!
-
I love both cars, I think they are awesome. I just think you'll enjoy the GTI more - I honestly do. And it would be a shame to waste this ridiculous wait and then not get the GTI!

In all honesty I totally agree, purely from the point of view of wasting this wait it would be a shame. I'm sure the BMW is great fun, and on back-to-back test drives I guess most of us would side with it. However, as an everyday car, I think drisser summed things up perfectly during his extended run.
Besides, these forums need ya' Bear!

Sometimes you have to let the heart rule the head and if its the Beemer thats exciting you then maybe that's the right car for you. Don't be influenced by forum talk. We are obviously biased towards the GTI but BMW have great forums as well. Beside, there's no reason not to hang about here whatever you decide. Andy went down the 135 road and he remains an active member which is great
It's alot to think about but whatever you decide will be the right decision for you
-
Agreed, the heart is why I chose VW over Ford for example, and GTI over GTD. Thankfully I haven't really had my heart broken on this journey so don't have that decision to make.
-
Back to topic.
If they launch the Golf R at Frankfurt in September and said first deliveries would be say Feb 2014, I'd definitely cancel my GTI.

Well, I suppose it may be. Supposedly its going to be built in wk 38. But after all that's gone on and with this hail storm, who knows? Frankfurt motor show is on 10th September. So let's see. I'm hoping for some info before that though.
Quote from autoexpress:
VW will be kept busy in Frankfurt, unveiling four new cars. The cooked-up four-wheel drive Golf R, along with the Nissan Leaf challenging e-Golf and an electric version of the Up! will be revealed. To complete the new Mk7 Golf line-up, a Golf Plus model will be showcased prior to going on sale in 2014.

It will be really interesting to see what price the R is set at. Considering the S3 starts at £30,500 I would assume the R may be below £30k?

Quite a shocker that matey!
Need more power?
Fancy four wheel drive?
Or just sick of waiting for your GTI PP?
It won't be much under £30k y'know. Plus I strongly doubt you'll get anywhere near 10-13% discounts. That's a lot of spondoolies
-
If things go the way they did when the Mk6 R was released, there will be UK demo stock and early customer cars in January with more arriving in March/April. Or based on your experiences with the GTI/D sometime between then and the end of universe... :lipsrsealed:
Depending how they spec it, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same price as the S3.
When I visited VW UK at Goodwood they weren't even sure we'd get the R here, after the slow sales of the Mk6.
-
I think the R will be 30,500 smacaroons but will come with a lot of kit as standard as supposed to the S3 where you need to spend several K more to get it to something similar to the GTI spec.

Hey H50. Well the wait has been long. I just have a bad feeling it may be late October/early November before I see my GTI PP.
I always wanted the R. It's just that I thought I would have had the GTI by now and the R would have been another 9 months. The gap won't be that much now.
I agree the discount won't be nearly as much as 12.5%. But something nevertheless.
I'm just floating the idea right now though. Need more information first.

Quick off topic:
Thanks guys for the advice posted above, its appreciated. I'll let you know what happens!

waiting with interest for the R, for me the R will always be more desirable than the S3 as it is the better drivers car and more fun and generally rarer

Is that real or a photoshop? The front, yet again, is too understated.
But the rest - wow!
-
Deffo a photoshop as the wheels fill the arches too well!
Having done a few google searches I think it is also unofficial but it's the same pic that keeps coming up so whether VW are leaking it I don't know.
-
looks official according to this

-
The front bumper looks a bit rubbish at first glance and seems to be a copy of the optional extra bumper on the outgoing SEAT Ibiza but seems to have an extra vent at the sides on closer inspection.

Interesting mechanical differences too.
I wonder if the 19" alloys will be standard in the UK to offer better value for money bearing in mind VW have knocked over £5k off the list price of the R Cabrio which used to cost something stupid like £38k
Lapis Blue too, I wonder if that's the same shade as the launch GTI?

Not sure if it is real or not, looks artificial to me, but agree the front is too understated, but yes, rest looks nice!
-
Definitely official. If you click this link and then click show/hide press release.

I like the specs but not the looks from the front. Rear looks fine though!
All that lightweight reduction and they stick heavy assed revised Talladega's on it too.

New Volkswagen Golf R revealed
On Autocar online now
-
 Nice colour
 Tail lights look a tad darker than the GTI (cool if so)
 Nice quad pipes (but still OTT on a 4 cyl engine IMO)
 Quite liking the 19" alloys
 Doesn't scream 300 bhp which I love (wolf in sheep's clothing)
 Don't like the front bumper at all (much prefer the GTI's)

Pretty much with you all the way there, also looks like it has full width LED indicators too where the red stripe would be in the headlights. It's a similar story with me and the old R - very powerful, but the rear exhausts didn't quite work for me, and from the front it was too understated. The GTI had a far nicer bumper, different enough from the normal golfs to stand out a bit.
-
Agree with the above. Love the big wheels, the quad exhausts and the lights. Front looks like any other golf which is a real shame, however I would still get one! Give it 2 years....
-
I think I will pass on the GTI this time, this looks like my next car
-
Just something about the R that doesn't light my fire enough to make me want one. Sure it's faster than the GTI, but for me its looks don't match its performance.
-
i think i've reached that age when i need one of these un an understated colour
-

+1. Just not feeling it, especially from the front. They've always been understated but it is lacking something :undecided:
