Title: driver side ARB scraping on driveshaft, AFTER adjustable anti drop links are on!
Post by: Dommy GTi on 15 August 2013, 11:37
Hi there,

I have a lowered golf gti on 215/45/17 tyres, now at first my standard drop links would scrap on the driveshaft only when turning left(so weight went on right wheel), so i decided to take the anti drop links off to try and give more clearence to the driveshaft, but then the ARB on the right side scraped on the drive shaft dramatically to the point I couldnt drive it, was so loud.

then i ordered some adjustable drop links off ebay, and it still rubbed! constantly! as if it sat on the driveshaft permantly, my car isnt that low aswell as im able to clear all and every speed bump possible, unless my centre box catches on it.

I then put my standard drop links back on and im back to square one with it only rubbing (not scraping anymore due to rubber drop link) when i turn left.

Ive been advised to cut my anti roll bar off, but ive had 3 other golfs much more lower than mine now which didnt scrape! bare in mind one of them had the anti roll bars cut off.

ANY OPINIONS AND IDEAS WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED, as im scared i will rip my shaft apart, or rip my anti drop link off. I paid f***ing £40 for the adjustable ones and they dont even do their job!

To be honest the adjustable drop links very rarely solve the problem alone, you usually need to change the front ARB as well.

have a look in the maintenece section. theres a thread on the different options available.

as said drop links rarely solve the problem.

don't remove arb. I have mine off atm until I get chance to fit new one... handles like crap.

get a white line/s3/r32/Octavia vrs arb.

as I said previously, have a look in the maintenance section, theres a full thread on your options.

should do, but find out what size it is before you buy new bushes for it.

How would i do that? has noone here done this on a golf mk4? because I can't seem to find any answers, only 3 pages of the same questions asked with very few answers which is not what im looking for, I might just raise it a tad and add some spacers all over so it dont look as bad?

You could always get the fk arb that goes over the drive shafts but as bigger hoops so it will clear easy

You have got the drop links adjusted correctly haven't you? They need to be shorter than standard

Any arb that goes under the driveshaft is the only sure fire way to solve the problem, I fitted an S3 one to mine. Other options are:

Seat Leon Cupra R
Golf R32
MK1 Audi TT
4Motion Golf

Mate there's loads of threads on this and a good few 'how 2's' Look on ukmkivs and vw vortex, I saw one on there last week with pictures, showing how to fit a ARB that goes below the shafts and fitting it up to the standard drop links. buy the one you linked to and stick it in. The reason I said about the size of the bush is because they range from 19mm to 23mm.

Thats fair mate, Only problem is im a newbie when it comes to advanced suspension, I only know basics like coilovers, lowering springs, etc, So bush sizes and ARB are literally, by this week new to me haha

the adjustable drop links need to be cut down an inch to get them to work, or at least thats been the case with all the ones i've fitted. they simply dont adjust short enough to pull the arb away from the drive shaft

Exactly my point mate ^ it rubs even when its shorter than short! it rubs less with the standard drop links on! What did you do to clear that issue?
