Be interested to know people's reasoning behind selecting a 5 door GTi/GTD over a 3 door (or visa-versa).
Main reason for me personally was because we have a young son, so I need the practicality of a 5 door. I 'personally' prefer 5 door cars anyway, just makes life a bit easier. Looks aside.
-
It would be a 3dr for me as we don't have kids and 3drs look better!

Practicality and convenience is why I went for 5 doors over 3 - can't really think of any other reasons! Though my daughter is long past needing a child seat in the back, it's still a pain when ferrying more than two passengers about if you only have 3 doors. It's also nice to just be able to open a door to throw some shopping or a bag in the back. A major plus in favour of the Golf is that it is one of very few cars that still looks really good in 5 door guise.
Admittedly 3 doors looks a bit better, and saves you some cash, but for an everyday car I'll take 5 doors every day.
-
Real GTI's only have 3 doors
I went for 3 purely for looks and to keep the weight down and cost too come to think of it.
I've got two teenage sons and have had a string of 5 door Golfs and similar cars. I really fancied a mid-life crisis Scirocco so made the compromise on the mk7 GTI and went for the arguably better looking 3 door.
Cheaper too!!!
When I saw the first motor show pics of the white 3 door I fell for the rear three quarter detailing of the roof channel and the mk1 style window line.
So it had to be.

Definitely love the window line cutting back to match the angle of the rear lights etc.
Another negative for me is that the doors on 3-door cars are heavier, and being longer you get less room to wiggle out of when parked up next to other cars.
-
I got the 3 Door because it looks better IMO and I don't have any kids.
Even if I had kids, I would still have the 3 Door because i'm not that considerate
-
I think the GTI is one of the few cars that looks just as good in 5 doors as 3 so I went for the added practicality of 5 doors.
I looked at A3/S3 and the 5 door versions look like estate cars to me and I'm not sure if any number of doors look good on an M135i!

Haha, me neither, it's my impatience at having to wait for others to clamber in that's my problem! ;)

A man after my own heart!!

3 door looks better IMO. Plus wife has a 5 dr so no point having two 5 dr cars. Little one will just have to climb in the back if we all go out in the GTI!
-
Company car rules no 3 doors or convertibles .....Would have probably gone for the 3dr. My mother has a mk5 GT 3rd and finds the doors really heavy and big when parking in a tight space, and the seat belt difficult to grab (but then her drivers seat is pretty much fully forward!)
There's no doubting the 3rd looks better, but some (blind) peeps might disagree
-
3dr for me because in my opinion it looks more sporty and being as its a second car I don't need to worry about fitting the kids in.
-
3 door cos it looks way better, echo the mk1 window line. Love it
Got 2 young kids and actually found 3 doors have their advantages.
When it's raining, you can climb in with them and sit on the back of the folder forward front seat.
Saves you getting a wet back getting them in car seats!
When older, they will have to climb in. Part of the adventure!
My only concerns are heavier longer doors and kids visibility.
Like others though, I was about to buy a GT86/scirocco/similar. So 3 dr made perfect sense!
-
No kids, can count the times I've had people in the back on 1 hand, but 5 doors for me. Love being able to sling stuff on the back seats and makes getting big stuff in the back with the seats folded easier - which i do a lot with push bikes.
Going against the flow I think the 5 door looks better.... The doors on the 3 door look too big.
-
I much prefer the 5 door. It's supposed to be a practical, good at everything sort of car and 5 doors gives it that edge over the 3 door. As cars are getting bigger, I think cars like the Golf can carry 5 doors off better than say the Mk2 ever could.
-
Can't see a huge aesthetic penalty for 5 door on the Golf - some cars look far better in 3 doors, but not the Golf (the 3 door looks a tiny bit better).
With cars getting wider and spaces getting smaller, big 3 door cars are a PITA, and my Aunty Joan nearly broke her hip getting out of the Scirocco around Feb time. With a 5 door costing more, but retaining more value, in a 3 year period it costs you no more to own the 5 door.

If I was ordering a mk7 GTI / GTD, it would be the 5 door. My mk6 is a 5 door; easier to get in and out if you're parked in a tight spot (like my garage!), or in the less than generous spaces in my works car park, as the doors are shorter.
I've also got elderly family members, and 5 doors make it easier for them to get in and out if they need me to take them places.

It's simple. If your an old git you'll order a 5 door. If your a cool, young, particularly good looking guy then it has to be 3 door

Either that or a fashion victim

3 door for me, no kids and im a loner lol
-
hah. im old and fat and went three door. lol
why? love the three qtr look as shallow as that, all the angles match and it seems to diff the mk7 a lot more than the mk6.

Many people would envy you. I miss those days living by myself, nobody to constantly nag you all the time. Good times

hahahaha!

I went for the 3 door because I prefer the look.. strange how much I notice since ordering that I use the back doors on my current 5 door! Hoping not to regret it!.
-
I agree that the 3 door looks at least a bit better than the 5 door, but not by a huge margin. However, I know it's a pointless consideration, but I wonder how influenced people are by the lower price? If they both cost the same, would more people go for the 5 door instead? Dunno'

Fixed

5 door for me for the practicality, as we regularly take our dog in the back of the car (shock horror), and he likes to have the rear window cracked down a little to give a bit of air flow and cool him down, something I've been unable to do for the last 2½ years in the Scirocco. Plus, I'm in the minority and actually prefer the looks of the 5 door to the 3 door.
As has been mentioned as well (and have a Scirocco know this well), the 3 door cars have huge doors which are not only heavy, but restrict getting in and out when parked in car parks etc.
-
5 door for me. One reason and one reason only my beautiful 5 month old daughter. O and the mrs said that a new car has to be 5 doors. I had a three door so I used her demand as A means of buying my GTD and sticking to the arguement I've only done what you asked me to do.
-
5 door for me also. Lost the three door thing when my daughter came along 14 years ago for the ease of car seat. Thinking won't be long till she won't need a car seat and I can go back to coupe again, how wrong was I 14 years on and still no 3 door and another 5 just ordered. You don't see many 3 door taxis going about  3 more years and she will have her own car. No doubt it will be a 3 door!!!!!

Meh, I've got two kids, the little terrors can squeeze in the back if they want to come with me.
-
5 door for me as I have owned a couple of 3 door cars and there were times then where I wished I had the extra doors. The 4/5 door cars I have had, I haven't once wanted less doors if that makes sense!
This is a personal view but I will get a 3 door when the car I am getting only has 2 seats in it. (Roll on my mid-life crisis! ;) :D)

My sentiments exactly - 2 front doors for a 2 seater! As long as 50 is the new mid-life crisis threshold, I've got that to look forward to as I've blown my 40th crisis on this GTI
-
I am only 30 odd months away from my 40th, and by the sounds of things my GTi may just about be there by then. :D

Haha, here's hoping ;)

yesterday me and the wife thought the doors on the 3 door were huge, they sure are as about 6cm longer than those on my mk6 3 door and reminded me of what the rocco used to be like
wife needs a 5 door which mean i can always have a 3, in reality we don't have kids but aging parents mean we have a couple of 5 doors at home these day
i love the rear quarter on the three door
