"Your car is due to be confirmed BW in the next week or so. What's that, we've been telling you that for the past 6 weeks? It's ok, we're really sure this time!"
- VW
-
"We'll call you day x to update you on progress."
- VW
(Call never received)
-
"We don't know why your order is delayed but it could be the DSG, don't worry we see you are about to be given a confirmed BW... oh wait, did you order a camera? Unfortunately there are a few delays..."
- VW
-
"We see a lot of customers are using the online tracker. They must be concerned about the delays with their order and want more information. I know, let's take down the only thing they can look at for "maintenance" reasons that should help smooth things over."
- VW
-
"We didn't anticipate the level of demand for this model. You pre ordered months ago?"
- VW
-
"Build allocation is complex and affected by many factors. For example despite having months worth of orders placed and higher than expected demand we felt it important to build hundreds of demos instead of clearing the backlog."
- VW
-
"Your mistake was you preordered. Means we can just string you along while taking and delivering other customers who we think would go elsewhere if told to expect a big wait."
- VW
-
"Our dealers are upset they're not getting any income because we haven't fulfilled any of their customers orders yet. No problem, tell them to start flogging all those demos we made in the meantime."
- VW
-
"You didn't think the lead times we quoted were real right? that was just sales talk!"
- VW
-
"I can't see any reason why a change to your order would affect your BW. Honest."
- VW
-
"End of July, early August at the latest."
- VW
-
I feel your pain - but I can't help it, that was still the funniest thread I have read in ages. Bravo!
Wonder if VW will pull the same BS maneuvers over here next year...

It really makes me chuckle that a company like VW, can tell their customers that they can't help them because their system is "down". How do they know it will be back after lunch? Scheduled maintenance during a work day? I highly doubt it.
I've worked in IT for a number of years, if something goes down, especially something as critical as a CRM it's all hands to the pump until it's fixed.
The number 10 grossing company in the world at $254 billion in revenue not having decent high availability in place for critical systems is highly unlikely.
Madness.

I'm wondering if it's a complacency thing with the UK and VW.
VW sales in Europe in general are pretty poor by recent standards. I've just got back from Spain and the country is on it's arse and talking to other guests in the hotel it seems like that's a common thread throughout Europe.
We in the UK like to moan as it's our national pastime but we don't have it anywhere near as bad as lots of Europe in many aspects and VW sales are very strong in the UK thanks to our funny attitude to cars where we like to buy something with a 'safe' image that means the cars will be respectable enough for our neighbours to not think we've just fallen on hard times but also not so flash as to make the neighbours jealous. In short we've become a nation of accountants! (added to that, could any accountants on here drop me a PM if they can give my college leaver son some career advice pretty please)
And VW fits the bill here perfectly with their conservative but sturdy image which was basically built on the back of the mk2 Golf and us boring Brits are so slow at realising as a nation that VW is a very different company to the one that built the mk2 Golf.
And VW now is massive. Still a family run affair but HUGE!
So a few whinging Poms in one of their strongest Euro markets isn't going to move them in the slightest as they attempt to conquer China with their automotive 4th Reich (yes, there is a reason the alloy wheels on some modern VWs look like certain insignia and war medals!!!).
The only way VW will notice that little RHD country getting the arse will be if customers boycott en masse. And us Brits like to whinge but not act. That's why we've never had a revolution, why we put up with WW1 and why we won't take VW on now.
And VW are well aware of this.
Paul Harris the owner of VW Driver magazine made an interesting point in the magazine last month and it was one I'd already noticed too.
VW do loads of 'specials' for the big Worthersee GTI show. One year they brought the W12 Golf over to GTI International which falls a month or two after Worthersee. But since then none of the show cars have been brought over to show off to GTI enthusiasts at Inters which in itself is quite a big and very respectable show that has been going for nearly as long as the GTI itself. It's not as if the cars aren't already built or that in global terms the show is that far from Germany.
It's because VW know they don't have to be bothered. So they're not.
Different story in the USA where they'll happily take a loss to make a sale at the moment...
Rant no.2 of the day over.
Can anyone tell I've not slept for three days?

- VW
-
"If you've specc'ed the reversing camera and now want to change your order it'll be removed as no longer on our systems. Oh that's not acceptable? Well tough. We are VW and we conquer all".
- VW
-
"You were one of the first customers in the UK to make an order? Doesn't mean anything around here."
- VW
-
"We can't check the status of your order as our systems are currently down."
- VW
"Can't keep telling the customers it will be confirmed in a week, they're starting to suspect something we need a new story. Ok ok I got it, tell them the system is down!"
- VW
-
"You can buy a demo car now! We have over 40 available throughout the UK. They are a launch spec, have been 'well tested' by an array of different right foots, but come with a full valet and VW cuddly toy."
- VW
-
"You are build week, 32, no 33, no sorry 31, hang on you have specc'ed the reserving camera and DSG? Fancy a 14 plate?"
- VW

The good news is 2 days later I got a build week confirmed! The dealer is offering a free tank of petrol and auto glyn coating or something

Chris: Ask for GAP instead of the Autoglym. You can protect the car with Sealant/interior coating a lot cheaper than you will be able to buy GAP. Both options are expensive due to commission bloating.
-
they've offered you 65 quids worth of fuel and something that comes with the car anyway! tell them to sod off and come back with a better offer.

"Your car has been built and is awaiting shipment"
Really? REALLY?!

"Your car is in the UK. Now it's showing in transit. Damn, the site just went down for a bit, your order now shows as being with the factory. Sorry, your order number is no longer recognised - you did place an order, didn't you?"

Yup, then you wake up and the horror starts all over again!

Seriously, all joking aside, this is by a huge margin the worst new car buying experience of my life. My other 4 VW's all went through perfectly. Is this just prevalent to the VAG brands, or are all other marque (Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar etc.) all just as bad ?
Anyone any idea ?

Well I dunno about Jag or Merc but I've spoken to 2 BMW dealers now and they are both being exceedingly helpful. Now admittedly this is the sales stage so they would be really wouldn't they? However I'd still say they are a LOT nicer than my VW dealer is (who is very matter of fact and bored sounding on the phone) and my previous experience with Ford post sale and post delivery was also miles better.
Now back on topic:
"Once you have a confirmed BW your car will definately be built in that week... unless there are some kind of delays. In which case we'll keep you up to date and informed at all time... if we get around to it."

This is worse than the mk 6 GTI palava. And that was bad.

I hope not, for the sake of you and fellow (hopefully) soon to be mk7 GTI and GTD owners. I had exactly an 8 month wait from date of ordering (Nov 10) to taking delivery (Jul 11) with my mk6 GTD.

For me personally, I ordered the same time in April 2009 and took delivery 2nd week of Sep. So at best I'm looking at 3 weeks later than that. At best.

I had a weird experience, was told by the dealer it would be a 6 month wait when I ordered In March 2010, car turned up June and I couldn't take delivery due to my car not going back until September. It's not happened this time though, car is scheduled to be delivered 6 weeks late if that happens I'll be lucky compared to some.
