Title: Will 6 speed box fit?
Post by: nottyash on 12 August 2013, 22:03
Hi Guys,
I'm experiencing gearbox problems getting the car (5 speed AUM) into 3rd and sometimes 5 gear on the wife's car.
Is this common?

Will the 6 speed gearbox fit straight onto an AUM engine??

Thanks

Nope a lot needs changing including driveshafts etc and it is not really worth fitting.

Thanks, It may only be a gear selection problem so will wait and see.

Can I ask why its not worth fitting? Genuinely interested as I have the 6-speed in my LCR and love it,
I've owned and driven a few mk4's and all ways felt it needed an extra gear.

They do need a extra gear but with speed limits they don't .Mine sound like its almost topped out at 120+  but not as bad as a 1.1 fiesta with a 4 speed box doing 110 mph that was bad i did not know how to stop it, taking your foot off the throttle was like braking hard lol, so i just kept it held down .

There's a bit more info here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4734247-parts-required-for-02j-to-02m-swap (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4734247-parts-required-for-02j-to-02m-swap)

AFAIK, the flywheels between 02j and 02M are different (bolt holes and diameter of mating faces), so you need a new clutch to suit.

go for it mate. I think its worth it. its not many parts anyhow. people saying its too many parts why? you would change your clutch and flywheel even if you were putting a 5 speeder back on if it was old??
