Title: Car mats
Post by: Sootchucker on 12 August 2013, 08:21
I know that the GTI / GTD's come with carpet mats as standard, but as I understand it, there's no logo on them (unlike my Scirocco ones that say "Scirocco").

So , two questions. Firstly, are the mats that come with the cars any good (i.e. do they have heel pads, thick enough etc), or are they pretty basic. Secondly, are there any other 3rd party suppliers that can be recommended that do a more luxurious set, perhaps with GTI or GTD logo's on the edge ?

I can only answer the first question but they are just standard carpet mats. There is no added protection for the heel. I would be interested to find out if there are bespoke GTI mats for the car as they would finish off the interior nicely

I would also like to know if there are any Luxury Mat Sets for the GTI.  I know VW do a set of Premium Mats with Golf written on them and from what I can see, these do have Golf written on them.  But enquiring at my VW Dealer about a GTI set of Mats they tell me there are no official mat sets out yet for the GTI.  Has there ever been an official set of Mats for the GTI?

On my Civic Type-R's I have always been able to get a set of luxury thick woven mats with heel protection and the Type-R logo on them.  The way I see it, is the Mat's are the finishing touch to the overall appearance of the interior of the car.  If the mats are basic, then it can sort of tarnish the appearance slightly.

I have seen the standard mats for the GTI and they look OK, but nothing special.  I am actively seeking a better set of mats to finish the look of the interior.

If anyone knows of a premium luxury set of mats with either 'Golf' or preferably GTI on them please us know where to get them.

I got a set of the luxury ones with the Golf logo thrown in for free so will see what they are like.  Would be nice to have a set that matched the interior better with red stitching and a nice GTI logo either stitched or fastened onto it.

The Edition 30 came with special mats... red piping on the edges and red "GTI" logos. I can't remember if the ED35 had anything special, I don't think it did.

.

I'm in a Scirocco 170TDI GT right now. It is a great car, but doesn't seem quite as screwed together as a Golf. Some panel alignments are a little off (my bonnet has an uneven overhang either side of the wings), it has a few rattles which have only partially been resolved, and it seems like poor value for money next to a GTI/GTD as they are more comprehensively equipped (unless you value the "free" leather because you want leather). The interior feels a little cheap compared to the MK7. When it was new out it compared very well to a MK5 Golf, just about held it's own next to a MK6 (due to MK6's miserly equipment levels). It handles well compared to a MK5 Golf, but isn't quite as good as a MK7.

IMO the Scirocco is a better car than a MK5 or MK6 Golf, but against the MK7? No, I don't think so. It is a great car, waiting for the GTD hasn't been much of a chore when I have the Scirocco.

The Scirocco was a massive head turner when it was new out (I had a Scirocco in March 2009 before this one). Everyone gawped at it and wanted a look at it. It attracted far more attention than a GTI ever will, it was a breath of fresh air before all the cloners jumped in on the design (new Clio, Megane Coupe, Astra GTC, Mercedes A-class). Thinking with my head, I wouldn't buy a Scirocco right now, not without a huge discount. There is a new one due out probably next year (the "free" leather is usually a giveaway that a VW model is on its last legs) - I would wait for that if you want a coupe (or see what the new Audi TT will be like - although it is not as practical, you can get 2 adults comfortably in the back of a Scirocco).

That is a shame, I really like the custom Scirocco mats that I have.  They do make the car feel a bit more luxury and they are nice and think and quite cosy.

They were quite expensive, I think I paid about £60-£70.  I can't remember exactly, it was a while ago.  Would upgrade if there was an option.

There are some knocking around on eBay but beware they're not proper GTI ones - for a start the logo is spelt with a small i ie. GTi - classic giveaway.

I have checked both UK and German VW Accessory Catalogues and they only have the Premium Mats with 'Golf' written on them. I have also looked online and the Mats do not seem to be of any real improvement over what you get from VW on either the standard or premium mats.  Also the Embroidery labeling of the GTI logo on those that offer it is in the wrong font and really does look tacky.

Unless someone else on the forum can point me in the right direction I may just see what the standard mats are like in my own car first then order the premium 'Golf' mats should no mats for the GTI be released by VW.

I actually prefer the rubber mats actually. Generous lippage keeps all the tracked in stones etc in place for easy hoover out. Main downside is that over time you rub bald spots in with your heel whilst working the pedals. I do find that the carpet ones get heel divots in also.

The standard mats aren't a bad fit for the GTD with grey trimming, but a GTI mat needs some red piping

Agreed. It needs red piping and a white stitched GTI logo.

I found the standard mats on both my Mk6 and Mk7 GTD pretty good. However, I got the dealer to throw in the "luxury" mats for free. I don't think they are of any better quality, but the white "Golf" lettering and edging looks pretty cool with the white ambient lighting and leather. If I had a GTI, I wouldn't bother unless they did some with red lettering and edging ( I am sure that they don't). Having said that, I don't think I would bother if I had the cloth seats as it would look a bit busy. In summary I would say GTD - go for it, GTI - don't, even if they are free.

I made sure that my standard set of mats will be thrown in the boot when they fit my free luxury set, so I see no sense in that logic.

Golf Mk7 isn't on there yet, but yeah, they would look pretty good with red piping I reckon.

This seems to be a bit of an oversight from VW's point of view. I'm sure if they offered GTI specific mats they would be quite popular and nice wee money earner. Audi provided them for my TT so i don't see why VW couldn't do the same

Agreed, I'd certainly offer up the cash if they made some with red piping and ideally a proper GTI logo riveted into them!

My point is just that the white edging and lettering will suit the interior and lighting of the GTD, rather than the GTI where red would, in my view, be more appropriate. I have my standard mats in the boot. If i had a GTI, the luxury ones (if free) would be there. Just my personal view.
