So me and the girlfriend want a decent car but nothing too expensive. E46 prices are rock bottom ATM and I do understand the expense of things going wrong to be a big part of that.
Was looking at MK4's and even MK5's but I'm liking these more.
I am swaying toward a 330d and get the injectors refurbed, check the turbo, give it a general going over with new seals on piping etc, inlet manifold cleaned up, swirl flaps gone then mapped.
Insurance is slightly cheaper too.
Anyone got any experience.
Don't mind buying slightly cheaper and putting the difference into parts.
It's either one of these or a 500 quid MK4 tdi with a knackered turbo then spunking 1-1.5k into parts to get it as reliable as poss!
Just want something fairly nice, bit of poke and not gonna cost the earth. Be nice stepping down from an XLWB van into.
Cheers lads.
-
just buy a 330ci sport with a manual box
-
Gonna have to drive a few I think. Although the derv will be quicker mapped I reckon the drive of the petrol will do it for me!
-
330 petrol with a manual box is the best choice.
-
Have you even looked at insurance! Your what, 20? You really think anyone is gonna insure you - and your missus on an e46 330............. very doubtful.

mine was cheaper to insure than a golf 1.8t

I drove a 3.0 volvo around at 21 as it was cheaper to insure than an XR2i and went faster , doubt that you could do it now though it was a long time ago :lipsrsealed:
-
As we're on it ill join in
When I was 20 I drove a 3.2 v8 jaguar xj sport and insured on my own for £850 so it can be done so fair play personaly I would go petrol but if your a high mille driver 320d
-
a good mate who works at bmw had a 330d and he decided it wasn't worth fixing when the engine played up! Do I need to say more?
-
The turbo on our 320d M sport went today. It has been problematic the entire time we've owned it. I've had no issues with our 330d and it's a much better engine which constantly returns more MPG.
The best BMW I've had was the E36 325i sport. Entirely different to the newer stuff.
The only good thing about the 320d is that it shares an engine with the MGZT CDTi so spares are cheaply available.
-
Think it's going to be a 330. Took a mate of a mates out today and absolutely love it. Was watching a Lupo 3l on eBay. Worlds apart but let's have a bit of fun.
780 to insure on the private and full traders policy soon so not a problem.

if its fun you want none of the cars you listed are any good

Well I want something reliable, well built and safe. The 330 was fun enough for me. I want RWD too for a change.

If you but a 330 you have my word I will PayPal you £3.50 to buy yourself a pint. Alas I think this may just be this week's instalment of Bellends great ideas that never come to fruition.........
-
f**k off pints are 3.80 in my local. It will happen just a case of when. Gotta be soon tho!
-
well it depends on the mileage you do, no one would chose a diesel over a petrol for anything other than budget
-
I get 40mpg out my m3 evo due to the genius daul vanos unit.
Get a 330ci I say. Has to be a manual though.
-
Had a looksie at a really nice red one today. Was a d. Lovely car has been resprayed in a reslly nice red which would normally put me off as would the lowered suspension and LM alloys but the guy was a sound bloke and all the work was amazing.
Just gotta try a petrol now....
Tempted to blow everything on an E46 M3 but the 1800 insurance and the fact it won't help a house deposit ruins it.

I drove the e46 m3 and then e36 m3 evo. The e46 is a awesome car but too easy. E36 felt like a real drivers car and I knew it would make me smile more than a e46. You only live once and live with no regrets.
-
If you can afford the fuel costs, go for the petrol! If you can afford the car, insurance and fuel costs, go for an E36 M3, much quicker and fantastic engines....
I have a 330d estate and as much as its a great car for woofling along on the motorway, the lag and lack of revviness make it a complete pain in the bum when you want to turn the wick up. There is also far less to go wrong with the petrol although admittedly, if anything in the engine goes wrong with either, it will sting you in a big way. Another point to factor in is that spec for spec, the Diesels do tend to be much more expensive than the petrol models which may mean it is cheaper to run a petrol over a few years than the Diesel. For reference, it is possible to get over 40MPG out of the diesel (my record is an indicated 46MPG over 200 miles but I was driving three over 60's around for the day so drove like a saint) but unless you are itching to die of boredom, 34-36 is more realistic. If you absolutely must go for a diesel, go for the later 6 speed model, the gear ratios are massively better (1st is useless on the 5 speed and the rest of the gears are really badly spaced), it puts out much more torque and power and is a nadgers more economical.
As for mapping, yes the Diesels do map up pretty well, but you have to consider that the clutches are not the strongest, are a nightmare to get out and cost a small fortune and the diff mountings are pretty well known for ripping out.......
Oh, one last point, if you think you are going to be drifting it around, think again! The E46's are big heavy beasts, will understeer worse than most FWD cars if the rear doesnt lose traction straight away, snap into oversteer in a completely unpredictable way over crests (as you find on the exit to most roundabouts) and, if you go for a Sport model with the 255 section rears like mine, have far too much rear end grip and no where near enough power to loosen the tail in the dry without applying a complete lack of mechanical sympathy. If you do go trying to drift one, make sure you learn in a space with a large run-off area and is preferably wet, you will find you need it!

Hmm food for thought cheers guys. I would prefer the M3 but want something just a tad more modern or at least the GF does!
Will deffo be looking for some petrols I think!
-
Why not look at e60 5 series then? They can be had cheap.
I was looking at a m5 v10 for £10,000
-
GF won't drive something that big.

get a new gf then

my old e39 5 series felt no bigger than my e36 m3. If anything the m3 feels bigger when parking because of the pathetic door mirrors

I can't believe people are still contributing to this? I supposed it does make a handy guide for anyone actually wanting to buy a BMW. :lipsrsealed:

Going to look at one today super cheap as needs an engine! Is a derv so if it's in good nick, it'll be mine.

Very wise words it was a sh!t heap.
Looked at an estate derv but the GF says no but I'm thinking yes. Diesel is the sensible option as the VR will drink like a fish. So confused as to what to do really. If I get a 3l petrol the VR will just never get used. Dunno whether to keep it MK3 and spend some money or get a MK2. Want it turbo'd whatever it is.
Need/want this BM though but also need a bleeding van!
GF insurance renewal in April and want her to insure the Beemer.
First off does anyone wanna buy 2 Clios, a 207, a Ka and a Micra? There's only so long the neighbors won't realize they're mine.
-
I hardly remember my mk3 after buying a m3!
3.2 that has 320bhp and gives me 40mpg.
Get a m3. Sell the pissing vr6 and get a derv

not at all. It idles at 60mph in 6th. I drove like a old man to the city and back and got 45mpg. Its the genius vanos unit. (Variable cam timing) Google it and see how it works. Very efficient low rpm.
ive booted it around town and still get 30mpg.

Been tempted by my neighbors A8.
'03 100,000 but he drives it so slow. He's stuck 60k on it. He puts his foot down til 4k then backs off scared.
Does need a bit of work here and there but can get it bargain price.
4.2.
Only trouble is the GF deffo won't drive it and I need a van and not another car. So tempting though, could definitely make some money on it just I'd imagine and extremely limited market.

Why dont you just get something she likes or just get a van you tit.
This is very boring.
Tell you what, dont tell us what you want to get, buy something then show us what you bought.

I've bought it. Gotta sort a Range Rover out tomorrow which he's having off his sister. She's gotta sort what she's doing with her brand new autobiography the one that James May had, phenomenal car. Drove it Sunday, 4.2 turbo V8 derv. Bloody flies. Anyways it's riddled with problems so she wants to take it back and get a different one.
Once that's done me mate/neighbor can have the older Range and I can have the Audi. Could be Friday could be in a few weeks.
Pics tomorrow but either way it's mine!
Anyone know any good refurb specialists in Kent? Also needs a drivers window that's been shot at with an air rifle and the rear screen is starting to mist.
Rear light is cracked and allowing water in. I think it's literally cracked with age. £200 so going to try and bodge it basically. Superglue it, sand it down and then polish it up.
Already stuck new suspension arms all round on it a while back and refurbished the air suspension compressor. Wanna look into digitizing the TV signal and got three small things to sort paint wise. Two touch ups which will come out perfect and a rear valance.
Due it's next belt and auto gearbox oil change soon so they better be done.
The thing is pretty quick. Not exactly sporty but this is perfect for 6 months or so which will work out perfect for some sort of BMW. ME and the GF have our own house next year hopefully might as well have a ludicrous car while I can.
So comfy it's unreal. Get's off the line like an absolute rocket. Just a shame midrange feels so slow when you think it's a 4.2. The speedo says it's fast just doesn't feel it. Sounds nice as is but I wanna get one of those flap things for the exhaust whatever they're called..
If I decide to keep it after 6 months it'll be S8 bits for it.

Ignoring the usual idiots, cracked on with repairing the rear light tonight. Will find out tomorrow when I'm gonna get it on a permanent basis.
To shed some light on it, I do the mechanical work for this firm, his sister is the boss. She bought him the A8 a few years back for 30k. She bought a brand new Range at the same time. Just bought the new one and I'm hoping as it was picked up yesterday it's sorted and she's happy!
The rear light was playing up, odd brake lights here and there and extremely dim.
That would be why:
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t265/JoshoRey/Clio/20130828_221539_zpse2c6bc01.jpg) (http://s162.photobucket.com/user/JoshoRey/media/Clio/20130828_221539_zpse2c6bc01.jpg.html)
Whole circuit board is covered a bit:

These deep cracks are actually raised on the lights and cracked right through. There was a breather on the rear and it was blocked. Wondering if condensation got hot and burst it, only explanation I can think off as it's all sealed perfect. :undecided:

So incredibly wobbly! Stick the suspension in lower mode and it rides REALLY nice but it lasts about 10 seconds til you get on a straight and the computer forces it back up. It's hideous!
Okay you can watch TV etc and it does go for the size/weight of the thing but the ride is horrible!

The new one has the split screen thing which is so cool. I'm watching TV and the drivers got the sat nav.
For some reason there's something unchavvy about both this one and the new one. Her old baby blue one though was minging blud.
