Hi everyone,
I've been lurking on this forum since I ordered my new GTI about a month ago and thought it was about time I joined up!!
Anyway hello everyone and thanks for the entertaining reads so far, its good to see I'm not the only one frustrated with long lead times but all being well I should hopefully be getting mine at the end of October.
Really looking forward to getting the Golf as was very impressed with the way that it drives and whilst the performance isn't exactly ground breaking compared to my previous cars as an all rounder it's hard to beat and the running cost (at least compared to an M car are peanuts!!)

Welcome Jeff. To be fair, if you only ordered last month (July) and are expecting delivery in October, then that's pretty good. A number of others including me ordered back in April and won't take delivery probably until early next month, so your only a month or so behind us !

Or even the last few days in March. You're looking at nigh on the standard Golf Lead time in your situation Jeff - hope you haven't ordered the rear camera though, or the question coould be "which October?".
It'll be worth the wait - had a test drive in a local demonstrator yet?
-
Yeah 'Welcome' Jeff... Look forward to reading your posts (Nice car history by the way ).

Welcome aboard Jeff, nice choice of car :) You'll certainly be lucky if you get yours in the timescales you have been misled on ;)
-
Impressive lead time! I ordered back in early June and dealer is stating delivery early-mid November.
-
Welcome Jeff. Nice spec you have chosen. The car might be a bit down in power compared to your previous rides but you won't regret it as its an awesome car. Plus there's always a remap
-
Welcome Jeff! Nice collection of previous motors there! I hope your wait for your GTI isn't as long as ours!
-
Welcome Jeff.
Look forward to your banter - you certainly know your cars
Hope you're not disappointed with the humble GTI after driving M3's???
-
Cheers guys, certainly know how to cheer a guy up
The dealer seems pretty adamant the build week is 41.... I'll guess we'll see!!
Although the golf isn't a patch on e92 M3 I won't miss the large service bills and astronomical thirst for super unleaded!! I had a pretty good test drive of one without the performance pack and was impressed with grip out of corners for a FWD car
Has anyone driven the performance pack and non performance pack to compare??
Someone also mentioned a remap..... Have seen little about this from the usual suspects in VAG world Revo, AMD, Custom code etc I'm presuming this is because the car is so new??
Has there been a definitive spec of the turbo etc come out for this engine as I'm guessing the new S3 has the same EA888 gen 3 but surely with a bigger turbo to make 300bhp out the bag...

Welcome Jeff!
I've not seen a lot of tuning options for the GTI yet either.
Of the big names only Abt seem to have a piggy back ECU at great cost so far pushing out an alleged 300PS. The encrypted ECUs will lead to tuners going more this way I think.
Milltek have a GTI to mess about with so no doubt that will be used to develop exhausts first and possibly software by a partner company at the same time (guessing here on the latter).
I emailed REVO a while ago but didn't hear back, if I ever get a build date I'll ring them directly but want to see how the car drives as standard first as I may not bother to remap at all and just concentrate on getting the best out of the standard PP set up.
But largely I would imagine the tuning companies are in the same boat as the rest of us and just either waiting for their own development car or one of their 'pet' customers to get theirs delivered so they can get to work on it.
The S3/R unit should be similar to the GTI with the fancy valve technology but I've seen scant technical info on it and this whole generation of engine seems to be very quiet on the technical front on the forums so far as where in previous incarnations there has been a massive buzz as people get to work on them or get information from technical websites. So we will have to assume like the 1.8t and then the 2.0TFSI that the uber models will have bigger turbos and intercoolers with uprated internals.
The delivery of these cars throughout the VAG range seems so slow at the moment that everything seems to be dragging.
Early days yet.

Yeah 'Welcome' Jeff... Look forward to reading your posts (Nice car history by the way ).
Not such a bad car history yourself!! Just need a ropey old M3 track car and its better than mine

Thanks Bud!! Was a regular on the E90post until I sold it few years ago.. Our paths may have crossed?. Still got the 5 though, so I still loiter on the M5Board... Love my Beemers (and the Evo's), but there's nothing quite like the Golf for its all round ability!!!
In fact the 5 has been relegated to the garage and hasn't seen daylight for over a month. Just cant afford the fuel these days. My current Mk6 on the other hand is used everyday and is every bit as fun to drive, hence why I've ordered another one.

The higher output VAG cars thanthe GTI had other uprated components for longevity, like the Cupra, S3 and 35th edition having amongst other things - hardened pistons (compared to standrad MK5 GTI), any such changes for new Cupra and S3 vs GTI, or do they all pretty much have the exact same engine, save for larger turbo, injectors and maybe a beefier clutch?

Yes I used to be on e90post, in fact I sold my 335i on there along with the wheels, FMIC and a few other bits as there were loads of people waiting to snap bits up on there
I know what you mean about the fuel cost, it got almost silly in the M3 at times and I can imagine its even worse on the M5 ??
Glad to hear your loving the GTI, I imagine in 90% of situations when driving normally it'll be great all round car and even in the 10% of the time you can actually have a bit of cain around, it will be not a million miles away (even if it is I can always book up a track day in e36 track wagon!!)
