is this standard ?
the fob lights up but doesn't seem to activate anything
ideas please

Not a standard alarm  Have you checked to see if there is an alarm fitted?

Open the bonnet and have a look for a black box about 3-5" or it could also have a green knob on the middle of the black box.

The alarm control unit may be located underneath the plastic trim just below the steering wheel.

Like someone said, check for the siren in the engine bay. If you have both, probs needs resync.
