Title: GTI logo on Nav screen
Post by: joet on 31 July 2013, 09:43
Quick question for new owners.

When does the splash screen with the VW GTI logo come up on your cars? On mine I remember seeing it a couple of times but I can't remember under what circumstances it did so.

Today for example, turned ignition on and it went straight to radio, which was on when I switched off ignition last night. No logo displayed.

Can someone shed some light?

Thanks

Joe, any chance this is something to do with switching off the ignition with the radio still on?  As in the auto resume thingy skips the splash in this case perhaps?

I have a question for you chaps too.  Do any of you have keyless and the pro nav?  If the engine is running and the radio is on, and you open the drivers door, what happens to the nav unit?  Does it stay on or does it cut out?  A skoda manual I found for a similar unit claims if the door is opened while the engine is running the nav will cut off.

Here is the skoda manual description for clarity:
Quote
After switching on the unit, the last audio source and operating mode that was active before switching off will be played.

If your vehicle is fitted with the KESSY system, the unit will switch off automatically after the engine is turned off and the door is opened.

If you open the driver's door before switching off the engine, the unit will also switch off.

Thanks Bill, could be that.

On the keyless side sorry, I can't comment because I don't have it.

Found this out this morning. It switches off when you open the door

Dammit!

Why would they do that?

Yeah that does seem a bit stupid...maybe I'm missing the point?  Does this mean that unless a key is within the vicinity of the car, it won't be possible to leave a passenger in the car listening to music, or is it just referring specifically to the nav system itself?

Going off Skoda the nav unit can be turned on manually without the ignition being on or the doors being shut (but will auto shut off after 30mins).

Regarding the door, I can't see a reason why the unit should shut off if the door is opened.  Other cars turn the radio/nav off if the ignition is turned off but why with the door?

OK that's not too bad then, at least somebody left in the car can still listen to music.  Yeah, I agree, doesn't make sense that opening the door would shut the unit off.  What if you stop at a lay-by to dump some rubbish in a bin, leaving the engine running?  When you get back in the nav unit will be off...ridiculous.

Yeah.  I dunno if they are trying to force people to avoid leaving the key in the car unattended, as there would be no point now since the radio/nav will shut off as soon as you open the door anyway.  I agree its silly though, could be loads of times you want to quickly open the door (like parking or having something handed to you).

The radio shutting off is an inconvenience.  If the navigation shuts off and has to be restarted from scratch that might prove to be truly annoying!  I hope it remembers what it was navigation too before it cut off.

The boot logo only appears I think if it's been a while since you last started the car.
I think the unit stays in "standby" mode for a while after you switch off, presumably to aid faster restart time. I can hear mine still humming (cooling fan?) after I switch off the ignition. RNS units in the MK6 were the same.

I agree, the radio is an inconvenience, but f the nav resets, that could be a right pain.

As an aside, the sat nav pro is a brilliant piece of kit. Loaded my music on to an SD card and it works great! The sat nav is really nice giving you route choices and the 3d graphics are very good. Touch screen seems very intuitive and quick to respond. Overall a really nice bit of equipment.

Right, I tried mine out there and I don't know what you guys are talking about! The Nav does not switch off if you open the door. It only switches off on door open if you've already switched off the ignition. With engine / ignition on it doesn't switch off.
I have keyless too btw.

I'm sure your right Joe. To be honest I couldn't remember if the ignition was on or off this morning, I just recall the screen switching off

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but the VW/GTI logo just never comes up on my screen when I switch on the ignition or turn on the screen if it's been off.

Can one of you other owners let me know under what circumstances yours comes up please? I just want to make sure it's not faulty before I call VW.

Thanks

I can't speak out of experience yet, but it sounds like if you use your car regularly, you will never see the logo as the unit defaults to the function you we using last.  Maybe if left a few days it will show, or if the battery is disconnected?

Though it'd b a nice touch, do we really need reminding that we are just starting up a VW every time?!

If you've been waiting as long as we have, a reminder might be necessary to let us know the car has arrived and we are not dreaming...............

Haha, I'm sure that after walking up to the car, opening it, and sitting in front of a VW-badged steering wheel complete with GTI logo, that's all the reality I'll need!  I ordered early April, will collect first half of September, so yeah, I think that qualifies as long! ;)

Right Joe just checked it out.

On ignition the GTI logo is appearing on the nav screen however it only seems to appear when the car has not been started for some time. The logo appeared when I left work this evening, the car having not moved for the entire day. When I got back home I turned the screen off and then back on but no logo (this was with the engine still running).

I then switched the engine off and locked the car. 2 mins later I jumped back in the car and started her up but still no logo.

I locked the car again and went back down an hour later. Turned the ignition on and hey presto the logo appeared, albeit for just a coupe of seconds before showing the radio stations.

Hope this helps

If its anything like the rns then it remains on for half an hour to aid fast boot up.

Thanks for doing that.

I think there must be something wrong with mine. I don't get anything even after it's been parked for the whole day. Might call VW about it.

Thanks again.

Or different software in IRL?  Dunno why they'd do that though.

Perhaps you need your firmware flashed?

Something weird happenned this morning. Started it up to take it out of garage after being parked all night. Radio comes on. No logo.

Left it in the street for a couple of minutes having taken the key out of the ignition while I locked the garage. (Don't have keyless)

Got back in, turned ignition on and hey presto, logo comes up.

Confused? I certainly am.

Joe

A small update on this. When I got into the car this morning the logo didn't appear on ignition. I suspect now that its only appearing if the system needs a few seconds to boot up. For example, I have sat nav on mine and had left it on the navigation when I switched off last night. As it takes a few seconds to acquire the link up to the satellite it shows the logo first and then on to the nav. It may be the same with picking up radio stations as well as other media such as reading your SD cards.

I don't believe there is any issue with it to be honest

I wonder if like the RNS when you unlock the door using the fob the system starts to boot up.
So if you unlock it remotely, then it takes you a good few seconds to walk to the car, open the door, throw your play piece in the back, put your seat belt on and then start the car, the system has internally booted up so the flash screen doesn't display.

Your time to actually get in and start the car Craig might be less due to the keyless entry as you are already at the car so giving it less time to boot up?

Just a thought.

Does make sense. Yesterday when I left it for a couple of minutes in the street I left it unlocked. When I got back in and started it up the logo came up. This would suggest that unlocking it with the remote does indeed put it into standby, hence the logo doesn't come up. Interesting.
