Title: Wheel Spacers - Mk4 GTI Lowered -40mm
Post by: tomparkes on 30 July 2013, 22:00
I've been searching trying to find an answer to this, but I'm not really getting anywhere. What wheel spacers would I safely be able to fit with the following setup:

Mk4 GTI 1.8T (AUM)
Lowered on Weitec Ultra GT 40mm Springs & Shocks

Current wheels - 16x6.5" Montreal II - ET 42 - 205/55/16

Planned new wheels - 18x8" Front & 18x9" Rear BBS LM Reps - ET 35 - 225/40/18

Would I be able to fit 5mm spacers on the front and 15mm spacers on the rear with both sets of wheels, without any rubbing? I basically want to improve the stance of the standard 16" ET 42 wheels before I fit the LM reps, but obviously want the spacers I use on the Montreal's to work on the LM's as well without a problem, so I'm not wasting my money. Would I get away with bigger spacers than that? Should I just wait until I get the LMs to get the right spacers for those?

Also - once I know what size spacers to go for, which type do I go for!? :undecided: Flat, hub centric, bolt on? Not sure about all this...

Well if your going for 'stance', your never going to be truly satisfied with a 40mm drop.

As for the spacers, id have 10mm front and rear. That'll see you pretty much flush, hubcentric all round.

up to 5 mm normal flat spacers will be ok... greater than 5mm get hubcentric.

with only a 40mm drop id say youd be ok yes

Hello mate I'm kinda new to this me self, I've read of people running 20mm on the rears and 5mm on the fronts. Can't cant confirm it myself. I'm in the same boat. I've just bought some bbs ch002 and want to get them as close as poss to the arch for a nice wide stance. I would wait till u get the new wheels before wasting money on the wrong spacers, just my opinion mate.

Ahhh yea and I would get hub centric defo if ur going 15_ 20mm

Maybe stance was the wrong word  I appreciate a 40mm drop is not that significant, but I'm just trying to get the car to sit a little nicer than standard. Don't want it slammed, so I should be OK with a 40mm drop, but without spacers I don't think the wheels would look all that pretty tucked right up under the car.

Hubcentric it is for over 5mm then - did a bit more searching last night and it seems 15mm rear works pretty well with the exact wheel I'm after. Saw a few pics of this and it looked sweet - also a few people were only running 15mm rears, with no front spacers. So maybe I'll wait to see how they sit up front first before buying anything. Rear definitely needs some help though.

Thanks again

They are :afro:

JOM coilovers all the way down with rear adjusters removed so whatever the maximum drop is, I'd guess about 80mm, maybe more.

Haha careful what you say about the girlfriend's mum mate!!

I'm getting my Weitec -40mm springs & shocks fitted one evening next week - not a big drop but looking forward to seeing/feeling the difference over the stock suspension. It's pretty bouncy at the moment, to be honest.

Also I've noticed an occasional knocking noise (sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car) when I go over speed bumps and such - any pointers as to what this might be? I'm hoping it's a problem with the stock suspension, so once it's out and replaced it might stop... If not I'm a bit worried :undecided:

Alright thanks, will check it out. Went for a drive tonight to have a bit more of a listen, and it sounds like it's coming more from the centre of the car, so I'm wondering if the exhaust is loose. Don't know - just sounds like something is loose and knocking. I'll get it checked when I swap the suspension next week and make sure nothing is hanging off that shouldn't be!
