Title: Help, broken rotor arm now won't run
Post by: Craigwilson on 30 July 2013, 21:47
Okay so I was just driving along and suddenly the car cut out and would not start, I took the dizzy cap off as the rotor arm had broken it two, so I got towed home and put a spare arm in had on and it won't start, I loosened the distributer and turned it anti clockwise and if I do that while a mate turns it over it start but it runs rough and cuts out and if I try turn it to where it should be with the timing light it just dies and misfires and backfires, all I can think of is the dizzy cap as the inside of it was a mess but I don't imagine it would cause this, help anyone !?

Of course it would cause it - the rotor arm's just disintegrated inside it!

Replace the arm and cap with new.  Timing shouldn't need to be adjusted.

Will do tommorow, just needed to be assured, but what is it that about the cap that would make it do that

as it's probaly a mess inside the dizzy cap that would explain it,

high voltage electricity is funky stuff it allways finds what it thinks is the easyest way to ground,  may not be the shortest route and  often prefers any route that dosent involve the spark plug,  a hareline crack in the dizzy cap acan cause chaos and a rotor arm flying apart is going to do at least that much  damage

make sure to buy a proper bosch cap and rotor arm if you can. some of that cheap stuff is awful. check around the hall sender for fragments of rotor arm to. you never know. could be running like a champ once the new parts are on.

Check the wiring to the hall sender. It's a plug with three wires that attaches to the dizzy. they tend to break as they get covered in oil.

It's okay I've tried another distributer in it and same problem, it only runs when timing is advanced and even then it runs terrible

It starts just, doesn't idle it sounds like its on 2 cylinders but and doesn't rev unless you keep it floored
