Title: Fitting an armrest, or not.....
Post by: esoxhunter on 30 July 2013, 18:15
I am attempting to retro fit a mk6 armrest to my 2010 1.4 TSI (122ps). It is the S model, so comes without the arm rest. I KNOW it fits, without modification, but two issues.
1. The outer case of the armrest, the bit that you see, fits around a cage. The cage screws to the frame of the car, but only when you can get the outer bit off it..... Can any one tell me how the outer case is detached? I cannot access the cage screw holes whilst the two main parts are attached.
2. The single screw holding the existing brake lever cover, (which has to come off) has a star shaped pattern, which none of my tools, inc umpteen Allen keys, fit.
If anyone has retro fitted this OEM armrest, I would be grateful for any advice.
Kind regards.

Not fitted one so can't help with that. The star shaped screw head you mention is a torx head so you need a set of these if you go ahead as all screws you come across will be the same fitment.

Thanks. I have one locally.
I have in fact just made a successful attempt to separate the inner cage from the arm rest. Tomorrow, I'll fit it.
I can see that all the console forward of the handbrake stays put.
I anticipate that there will be five locating holes to anchor the arm rest.
The arm rest will give me an Aux-in, as well as a 3 position rest, with space for either a CD interchanger, or multi media connects.
Volkeswagon quoted £622 for the arm rest, fitted. I picked mine up on Ebay for £60, in excellent condition, plus a tenner for extra piping , so the rear air vents in the arm rest will work. The rest also has two classy cup holders that pop out from a drawer.
I am saying all this, not having actually fitted it, but, hopefully, tomorrow morning will see the job done.
Thank you again for the info regarding the torx driver/set , I suspect that will stand me in good stead for other jobs on the car.
