Mines out at the mo waiting to be done.

Get decent contact adhesive, get fabric that has a bit of stretch to it, and only work in around 6" square areas at a time.

I just redid my roof in black, was going to paint the plastic too but never got around to it, I must say it's made quite a difference to the feel inside.

When adhering the material to the roofboard try start off at the visors/front end of the board first so you can work the material into the shapes then work your way backwards, remember to press the material into the roof handle holes too.

Doing mine at the moment.... I've gone for some black faux suede black-out curtain material, the black-out backing stops the glue soaking through, its got a little stretch and give, and feels lovely!

Using this hi-temp adhesive spray.

Will put up pics when I'm done, hopefully tonight if the rain holds off!

I have just sprayed a couple of mine and it came up well and looked the part.

I used normal rattle cans.......takes a load of spray to get a good finish and makes the headlining turn to a plastic type effect but looks good and is cheap and easy to do.

About 6 cans to get a good finish otherwise it dries patchy

Post by: luckycharms on 30 July 2013, 15:34
Cool, I might go down the spraying line so. I'll need spray paint for the handles/visors etc anyway. How is it for finish? As in if someone rubbed off it would it come off in their hands?

Next stop ebay for some black 5 door trim!

Once its on and dried it will not come off.......feels like plastic when its done but looks better.

Did mine in faux suede. Did the pillars in black vinyl. Although the seat belt does wear it away.

Yeah brilliant!!

Ordinarily black roof + grey trim looks naff but the designs really work well with the grey.

High temp contact glue like trim fix will do the job. I used two cans to do mine but ideally should have used three two was a cutting it a bit fine.

When I done mine with high temp glue was last summer.  Since having a few hot days the lining dropped , anyways the best solution without takin it out again was a staple gun worked a treat never dropped since :)

how easy to take the plastic bits off? Thinking about just sorucing an interior then painting/ retrimming then swap over? then sell old one on?
Title: Re: Headlining - who's re-trimed?
Post by: tshirt2k on 27 September 2013, 11:40
Even high temp stuff won't stick very well if it hasn't been applied properly.

It has to be left for a few mins to go tacky 1st, and apply to both sides.

I did this year's back. After one failed attempt I got another liner and used acoustic carpet and a tin of glue which brushed on. Check my old thread it might help:

how do the get the a pillars out from ( i think there the a pillars? the ones by the dashboard?) seems like they won't come out very easily ? :undecided:

Remove the center pillar section by the seatbelt, remove the screw which holds that front pillar in place.
All you need to do is try and pull that pillar upwards/backwards following the angle of the body and it should unclip/slide off.

Post by: X01X on 24 October 2013, 00:50
I've done this 3 times in a year, so listen up and learn from my mistakes!

Attempt 1:

Paid a guy to re-trim my pillars and headlining,  60 quid, bargain! The guy used the wrong glue and it peeled and sagged within weeks.

Attempt 2:

I pulled all the sagging material off and applied my own but due to guy in attempt one removing the good old grey fabric, my glue had nothing to stick to, after a few weeks, again it all sagged and peeled within weeks.

Attemp 3:

I got really f**ked off, pulled everything out. Went down the scrappy and got new headliner and pillars.
Cleaned the pillars with white spirit and scrubbed them with a scotch pad (gives the glue something to stick to) I used faux black leather on my pillars and sunroof slide. I bought black grab handles and visors from a guy off here. I rattle canned the bits of platic in the pillars where the seat belts come from (be careful excess glue doesn't get on them or the won't move, ooops lol) rattle canned the interior light console and the piece that goes over my sunroof motor, also rattle canned my whole headliner, took a while as it's fabric and it absorbed some of the paint, just kept adding layers till it was all even and looked good (I applied 2 layers of primer, 2 layers of paint then 2 layers of clear laquer to the plastic parts) Once all dry and ready, bibbety bobbety boo the car was done lol (took weeks as I was working and disheartened from being f**ked over in attempt 1 and 2)

Dont the headliner go rock solid and feel weird with rattle cans?
Title: Re: Headlining - who's re-trimed?
Post by: X01X on 24 October 2013, 19:08
Sort of. Obviously the paint dries it out but it actually looks quite good.

Tbh after all the hassle I had, I'd of rubbed coal in it to make it black lol

Use a material that stretches. The leather I used only streched 1 direction which made it very difficult to stick round edges and corners. Faux suede is good but kinda looks like cheap flocking

Did mine a little while ago, the high temp glue is the one to go for! No issues at all.

Take your time and if you have access to another pair of hands it will make the job easier, get them to hold the fabric out the way as you work your way forward/backwards.

I also left mine overnight to give it plenty of time to dry and have not had a single issue, just need to sort my grab handles out!

Will see if I have the pics of our progress

Post by: tshirt2k on 23 November 2013, 09:35
You don't need high temp glue. Wickes contact adhesive is very good. It's not a spray though. Takes longer but mine hasn't moved. Black car attracts heat and we had some hot days this year.

You have to make sure you leave the glue to go tacky before sticking down. That's the key. Otherwise the solvents don't release properly

Ok so have we come to a conclusion in what glue to use? And weather it should be spray or brush on?
Im thinking about doing mine again as it has started to sag at the back. Looks ugly and is p!ssing me of now. I used suede material no backing.
Loads of people are asking which glue to use.
So when did you do you head lining?
What glue did you use?
And links will be good.
I know tshirt has done his some time ago. So thats a starting point.

I was wondering if anyone had come across a syring-able type glue as there are a few localised sagging bits of material on my estate which dont warrant the hassle of a full retrim?

When mine done that I just put a staple gun round the roof lining works a treat and never fell down again

I REALLY don't want staples scattered all over the central section of my roof!
I was thinking a sharp syringe with glue in could carefully pierce through the material and gently leave glue behind it...in theory anyway.
