I need to drill a large hole into my kitchen wall to fit an outside garden tap.
I bought an 18mm x 400mm drill bit to do the job, naively thinking that I could just pop it into my B&Q value drill and away I went.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250900059413?var=550048523361&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
When the drill bit arrived however the damn thing wouldn't fit inside my drill, the chuck isn't big enough to take the size of the drill bit. I expected the drill bit to be smaller at the end to fit inside any old drill, but no. I guess a normal drill wouldn't be up to the task anyway?
Having done some research it looks like I probably need some sort of SDS rotary hammer drill. Does that sound right? If so, will that fit a drill bit with an 18mm diameter?
This seemed like a good choice - http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/power-tools/drills/sds_drills/Bosch-PBH-2100-RE-SDS-Rotary-Hammer-12317531

if in doubt get an expert out
-
is that the drill bits with the 2 oval grooves at the end?
-
It's only a hole, can't be that hard. I also need something with more grunt for making a trench in my conctre lounge floor soon to run cables across the room.

I think SDS drill bits are yes, the bit I bought doesn't have them though.
I'm happy to bin the drill bit I bought though in favour of a proper SDS one.

Or go to HSS Hireshop and rent one for a day.
Drilling through brick will generally need a mains powered drill, hammer action might be necessary if it's a really thick dense wall.
-
Well I'm going to drill through the cement instead of the brick, so should make it easier. But I agree I think I need mains powered hammer action. SDS seems to be required in order to fit large drill bits?
I did think to pop to HSS. But seeing as I need to do extensive drilling/chiselling into my cement floor soon, it might be better to just invest in somehing.

steer clear of hitachi sds drills. they're crap.
stick to makita or bosch for an sds drill. if you're going to be doing lots of chiselling then make sure you get a high powered one.
-
I drill all the time. Have 3 SDS drills.
The SDS is all the same size even if you got a 6mm or 30mm.
Look up HSS hire. You will have one close by mate.
-
Cheers tweed, it sounds like the option to go for then. And from what I've read, you use an adaptor to fit normal size bits into one of them?
I think it's worth investing in something. The drill I have now is some 8 year old B&Q value cordless effort, battery is dead after 10 minutes generally.
-
I havent seen one. Only normal drill chuck that fits into a sds, doesn't mean there isn't one.
I have two of these but 110 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AEG-KH28-XE-28mm-SDS-3-Mode-Hammer-Drill-QCC-240-Vol-/260815498371?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item3cb9d0ac83 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AEG-KH28-XE-28mm-SDS-3-Mode-Hammer-Drill-QCC-240-Vol-/260815498371?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item3cb9d0ac83)
and a cordless dewalt sds.

chase two lines with a grinder first. Inch or two apart then use the sds hammer chisel to make the channel

Bit out of my price range

Good advice, cheers. That's exactly what I'm looking to do. My television is going to be wll mounted on the opposite side of the room from where the phone/fibre, Sky and aerial is :undecided: So need to route the cables all the way across. Figured do a proper job of it

personally i wouldn't go cheaper/less powerful than this if you want it to last:

Spend a bit more and get a very good drill:

I have a load of drills like yours with the shank spun down to fit my cordless 10 and 12mm chucks.
-
grind the shank down, it's a bodge but your not useing it every day.
or get an SDS bit an a cheep 6kg drill esp if you want to do lots of chisseling
-
when you are lookin for hammer drills especially if you are going to be doing quite a lot of chiseling then you need to look for one with a high joule rating as that is how hard it can hit, and the harder it can hit the better it will be at chiseling
