Hello all, posting from South Africa. Enjoyed reading through the Mk7 threads on the forum, some very good information
I've noticed an issue with the last 2 first batch models, the Mk 5 and 6 GTi. They came with their issues, cam shaft, fuel pump etc on the 5 and cam tensioner issue on the 6, are any of you concerned about or experienced any "teething" issues with the MK7 GTI? Or are we all comfortable with the fact that its a evolution of the previous gen TSI where issues should have been resolved?
-
I'm comfortable, they've been working on various incarnations of this engine for many years now, if they can't get it right now I don't 'spose they ever will
-
I got the 5 year warranty. What does that tell you?
Lots of new kit on the mk7. Changes to engine and DSG, new chassis, lots of new electric gizmos... hopefully no issues. Never had a problem with my current car despite it being an early batch it sails through each service. Hoping for the same with my GTI
Probably we haven't got enough in the country to know about any issues yet. Give it a year.

I suppose that's the issue, only time will tell. I'm finding it hard to accept that issues should have been ironed out when history has proven otherwise with the early batch models. I just can't wait a year to get into a 7 GTI though

I'm going to do the same to make myself feel comfortable

I certainly hope there's no issues as apparently mine is arriving at the dealeship tomorrow . Hopefully will collect on Monday.
Welcome to the forum! I was brought up in Cape Town in my early years.

Will do pal! I've definitely been very fortunate with my order with it taking about 11 weeks from order to collection. The funny thing is that the tracker is still showing in transit so it's clearly not being updated on a regular basis.
Sod's law that im off work this week but I'm away up North tomorrow so not going to get to see it tomorrow. However I have asked the dealer to email me some pics and ill post them on here

. We had an early 5
. I waited a year after launch for a 6 so hoped any issues would be sorted out by then but I did not quite wait long enough.
. Won't make the same mistake for a 7.
I'll wait and see how it all pans out.......

Tells me you should have got the manual, one less thing to go wrong

eh?
-
You got the 5 year warranty ?! Assume because you are worried something will go wrong..
Hence one less thing to go wrong with manual box..
-
Manual cant break huh?
-
Lol
Depends on the driver, but I would hazard a guess less warranty claims on the manual than the dsg !
If I have gearbox problems it will be my last VW !
-
I did a youtube search for mk7 problems.
Only thing so far is wipers are crap
Seat issues
Did find his about older VWs which i liked his style.

ouch, just watched that. Everything I thought about VW is true and I was absolutely correct about that gearbox...

A while back someone posted a similar "horror" story about Chinese DSG recalls. As I pointed out then, and will do so again now, there are 2 DSG boxes. The recalls are all on the 7 speed. The GTI is fitted with a completely different 6 speed box. You understand that this says nothing whatsoever about the GTI DSG right? It's an entirely different part.
I'm buying DSG and I have no worried at all.
-
Sorry, I keep forgetting the GTI has the six speed.
-
However, my cynicism still agrees with the presenter of that video. Once they have your money, they couldn't care less and the car becomes a liability to them.
-
They also talk about tdi engines.
But there are quite a few reports of mecatronics unit failures on mk6 and mk5 6 speed dsg.
I wait and see if they have cured that one. It may suprise me if they have.
The only reason I posted that link was to show the attitude to customers is little different in other countries. I also liked his style.
VW attitude to all the many component design issues with the mk5 and mk6 is the same as that video from my experience.

Agreed. With a few good exceptions you gotta fight your own corner if you want something doing. Even though I shelled out for warranty I expect a hard battle would be needed to get them to agree that I have a warranty covered issue should the worst happen.
A few companies I've dealt with have been fair and anxious to do the right thing for their customers but a good 2/3 of them do seem to take your money and do everything they can to avoid delivering the service paid for. Have lost out on literally thousands of pounds to people like Vodafone forced me to pay 18 months of a 2 year contract for a service that they cancelled immediately after i signed up for it (utter assholes don't deal with them anyone you'd be shocked if you read the small print) and some insurance company, I forget who, who gladly took the premiums for years and then weaselled out of responsibility when they were legitimately liable to pay up.
This is seriously ££££ that I was owed and they can just say "nah, we don't agree" and there is always some small print that says you must always pay them but for any reason they like they can back out if they want.... And you STILL have to pay them. In the vodka phone case I only didn't have to pay the full 24 months because I threatened trading standards on them. Still didn't get me the 18 months DD they had been taking each month back though. That's literally theft.

So are Toyota any better?
I have always been shocked at the treatment from the big VW dealers. I remember an alloy wheel on my Mk4 GT TDI was flaking laquer. I was refused a warranty claim because there was a slight kerb mark elsewhere. Another smaller, independent dealer (MJ Warner) sorted a warranty claim out immediately.

Is that MJ Warner near Buntingford/Puckeridge? I've used them before, very good service.

Yep, Hare St... near Buntingford. I really like them.

Yeah they're really good. Family run business and put a precedence on good service.

You only hear about the bad DSG boxes. My Dad ran his MK5 170TDI GT DSG (that had significantly more torque than the GTI of the time) for nigh on 120k miles and the DSG box never missed a beat. 40k miles of that was with tuning box to 200PS and my dad made plenty of use of the extra power - the unit was bullet-proof. Far more to worry about with 7 speed dry clutch.
-
You only hear about the bad DSG boxes.
Which means that there are quite a few about. The single evidence of your dad's car is completely anecdotal.

I know around 6 people at work with Golf 2.0TDIs and DSG (Golfs/Passat CCs/Sciroccos/A3) and none have had issues. The 7 speed dry clutch is definitely the one to be concerned with and you won't see that on a 2.0 VAG unit in TDI or TSI.
The fact you only hear about the bad ones is completely anecdotal. If 1 in 100 were to fail would you consider it an issue? The 99 wouldn't be broadcasting how trouble-free their DSGs were, but you'd hear about the 1 bad one. If you keep your Golf beyond the warranty and it hasn't played up in warranty it's quite unlikely to start playing up just out of warranty (although it is possible).
VWs aren't the most reliable cars - my 2 MK5 Golfs had plenty of warranty work lavished upon them, which is a good thing - all the niggles were picked up early. A faulty component or incorrect installation is far likely to fail earlier than later.
The 6 speed wet box has been with us a long time and is far more established than the newer 7 speed dry unit. They've had plenty of time to perfect it if it was a troublesome unit.

Locally reported issues on the GTI - noisy front suspension, fix is to grease the top shock mounts and add some sort of sleeve.

By locally I assume you mean SA? I wonder if this is being reported anywhere else or if it could be environment related.

Yes, local to SA. I'm not saying that it is only happening in SA but all of the reports I read are from SA this far.

Any of you UK guys experiencing odd front suspension noises?

Nope - we're all still waiting for our cars!

Just wanted to keep this post updated, my GTI has the squeaky/creaking front suspension issue now. There is also a lot of road noise and wind noise from around the windows (4 door). My front discs look like sh!t after only 2000km with 1500 of that being long distance highway driving.

There is a ridge/indent along the circumference of the disc, 3/4 way from the top.

Crikey! Thats not good, sounds like a fault to me mate and i'd be taking it back to the dealers. :-\

100% bud, most certainly sending it in for sorting out. Will keep this thread updated.

You have the PP SA?
Most of the pics I've seen of PP cars the front discs look like they're covered in brown dust. They look a right mess to be honest!

Unfortunately not, it's rumored to be here next year though so just the "regular" version for now.
