Title: Alloys GTD vs GTi
Post by: pauliem on 25 July 2013, 14:34
Anyone else other than me think the standard alloys on the GTD are a bit nicer than the GTi ones?

They just look so right on the Golf.

Nope !

Love the standard alloys on the GTi, wouldnt even swap them for the 19s even if they were a no cost option !

The question is “do any future GTI owners think the Nogaros look better than the Austins”.
I think most future GTD owners here would think the Nogaros look better if they haven’t already commented about the wheels already within other threads.

GTD on order and prefer the 18" GTD wheels over the 19" or 18" GTIs

When I had a GTD on order (loooong story) I said the Nogaro's. Haha!
Now I've got the GTI on order it has to be the Austin's. Haha!

What a slag I am

I think the Std GTD alloys look very similar to the 19". I had to look twice to notice the difference on the configurator. Both look very modern and cutting edge.
The GTI alloys however look a bit dated to me, I'm sure they had something similar on a mk 5. if I was buying a GTI I would definitely upgrade to 19" but with the GTD there is no point.

All my opinion of course and when we are spending significant sums of money we always defend our position.

(I have a GTD on order (which is best))

There's not much in it, but I'm gonna stick my neck out & say "I prefer the GTD standard Nogaro's over the GTi Austins"..... Only because the phone dial/ axe head design are a little bit long in the tooth. That's not to say I don't like them, its just that the Nogaro's are a refreshing change... Now don't flame me!

I was not a big fan of the alloys in the Mk5 and Mk6 GTI but these new ones are much sharper looking. If they had stuck with the same design I would definitely have went with the Santiagos

Post by: Bill_the_Bear on 25 July 2013, 16:38
I like the Santiagos best, very fresh design IMO.  The Austins are pretty cool too, but not quite as cool as the Santiagos.  I'm not really a fan of the Nogaros.  Unlike the Austins and Santiagos they feel a bit too much like a generic after market design.

There is probably no small amount of bias here though in the sense that I can see how I might make myself prefer the Nogaros over the Austins if I had ordered a GTD.  I'm sure the same is true for many of us.  Santiagos really are the best though.

No can't stand gtd wheels they just have never looked as cool as gti wheels. The spoked wheels all look the same, boring. Just my opinion.

Nope. If the GTD wheels were better they'd be on the GTI.  They're not, so they aren't.

Still think they're nice, just not as good as the 18s nor the 19s.

I prefer the Austins as they are nice and subtle. I like nice and subtle.

When I get round to ordering my GTI/D, I will probably go for the standard wheels, but replace them myself with some BBS CH's or similar. When I come to sell the car, I'll get some of the money back from selling the BBS's and have a mint set of stock wheels to go back on the car. In theory that will be cheaper than paying the near £1000 to upgrade to 19's from the factory.

"I think the Std GTD alloys look very similar to the 19" .... did your page refresh when you changed the wheels on the config?

Personally if I had free choice between the two I would have gone for the GTD alloys.

(Though I am also a little odd in that I would have also gone for 17" alloys if I could have!)

Comments so far run a little like this...

Wow, gorgeous and those wheels are just fantastic.

Everyone I know comments on the car, then the wheels.

The Austins are really, really nice wheels.

Yes I agree they make the gti stand out from the crowd. Gtd just look like all the other golf wheels. You would never notice them.

Obviously ordering the GTD I'm going to say I prefer them. The GTi alloys are smart though. 19s don't do it for me at all.

Well, I have ordered a GTi and prefer the GTD wheels.  I like the 19"s on the GTI even less.

Just think they are bit smarter and a bit less lairy.

no wind up. hate the gti wheels and don't think they should be on a golf gti. gtd wheels are much better but that's just my opinion. the 19's and the nogaros are very similar and it would be interesting to see eventually his many gti owners ditch the standard one for either the 19's or the gtd ones or something similar. it's a bit of a Marmite thread though

For what its worth, my humble opinion is that having ordered a GTI with 18" Austins I would have liked a no-cost option to have the 18" Nagaros instead. I think they look sportier. I agree with the previous comments about the Austins looking too much like previous generations standard GTI wheels. I wouldn't have paid for the 19" Santiagos on either GTI or GTD as I don't think I would notice any difference apart from a harder ride ?

But hey, its all personal preference at the end of the day.

Of course, a car with any wheels would be nice at this moment in time given the delays in builds.

Personally, not too keen on the GTD or the GTI wheels, i find the black look far too glossy (like Vauxhall's), and the 19's look very busy. I've seen all 3 on GTD's and GTI's today at Peterborough VW. I thought the GTD would be more anthracite looking, by going by the brochure, but hey, i was wrong, again lol.

Maybe i'll keep the GTD wheels as spare and put some BBS CH-R's on instead.

Which Peterborough dealership has a GTD in? Are they available for a test drive?

Hi KyleB,

VW Robinsons (Peterborough) has just got in there demonstrator on Friday. A red GTD ( 5 door manual), cracking drive, and also a carbon grey GTD ( 5 door manual with 19's). Not sure if this is a display car.

They also have a white GTI demonstrator (3 door manual).

Just what we need, more demonstrators.

It makes me a bit sick that I ordered a red 5 door GTD from Robinsons in Stamford in April and have another 2-3 months to wait and yet there is one sitting just down the road in Peterborough to advertise to a car that people can't have for months.

Same here.  I do like the GTD alloys, far nicer than the 19s, but the standard GTI alloys look even nicer and are more in keeping with the GTI image.

I'm not sure if any of you guys have seen the VW accessories brochure but there are some cracking 18" anthracite alloys in there. Think they would look great on the GTI/GTD
