Title: Looking to upgrade broadband router
Post by: Rhyso on 22 July 2013, 00:28
Currently have the Thomson built standard router provided by Plusnet which is now approaching 2 years old

In that time our household has added 2 iPhones, iPad, along with smart TV, Xbox, cloud storage, printer etc etc and I think its time its upgraded to something that can handle all the extra equipment  :undecided:

The biggest problem I have is the front of my house is solid stone wall so reception can be patchy at best ( already run wireless detection software and swapped channels on my router to ensure im not clashing) so looking for something with good signal strength.  My router is located at the back of the house in the dining room next to the master socket

Saw this on the Gadget Show the other week
http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-rt-ac56u--wireless-ac1200-dual-band-usb3-0-gigabit-router-8TM9.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc%20product%20search&utm_content=Q200&utm_campaign=Networking%20-%20Routers%20and%20Switches%20-%20Routers&origin=pla

Or is there something out there that will better suit my needs

If you have solid walls just run a repeater or look at one of the ring main LAN systems with wi-fi adaptors.

For the most part wi-fi is not great if you live in old houses - we live in an Edwardian house, the router is located on the second floor and we get better reception in the garden than in the next room :)

Yeah i already have a couple of the Powerlink adaptors for behind the TV

Might look into one with wifi then

You need to work out at what speed the wireless devices are rated. EG if some are n and some are g, then you're better off getting a router that allows two wireless networks - one on g and one on n. Otherwise the whole network gets downrated to g speed. Dual band routers will help.

If everything runs at n-speed, just get an n-router and think about those powerline gadgets.

Only get a new router if the current one really isn't up to the job not just because you have all those new devices connected. Does the internet work better with less devices connected? I'd start by talking to PlusNet, they may be able to give you a new router FOC, hopefully they've moved away from the Thompson routers now.

Anything I'd recommend wouldn't be a home user based system/consumer priced.

Its just that in certain parts the signal drops a fair bit. Linzi's laptop has the most problems despite driver updates etc

I have also noticed my phone switching from wifi to 3G more often than normal  :undecided:  it used to be rock solid

Ok the router runs on the G band

It would appear that the iPhone, iPad and my laptop run on the N band....that should explain the slowness then  :undecided:

Need to check Linzi's but I suspect it might be N but its a year older than mine.

So any suggestions for a router?

EDIT - Linzi's is a B/G wireless card   updated it to the latest drivers (went from 2007-2009!)

I have ordered another homeplug with wireless built in in the meantime so Im hopeful that will improve things but more speed out of my current devices might not be a bad thing....

I'd recommend a dual band router, I can't recommend any makes other than to stay away from Netgear. We've had so much hassle with Netgear products for our smaller customers who don't want to fork out for the expensive kit.

Thanks Jay

Ive got the TP Link Homeplugs so was thinking maybe this might compliment everything

Being an Apple whore I have an AirPort Extreme which is piss easy to set up using an iPad or iPhone, uses dual networks and can set up a guest network for when friends/family come over (let's them have internet access without actually accessing your main network).

Very good signal in the flat I live in but my friend lives in an old cottage and uses the same router, he says it's much better using that.

It's not for everyone but just gives you another option.

It's true, it is, but you can pick up second hand ones for a good 30-40% off. They have just released a new model with a new form factor so the older ones are going cheaper.

Just remember, think it's important for you to know that you would still need the existing router as it is a modem. The Extreme is only a router, it doesn't have a built-in modem.

Any reason why you want to go for the ac model? ac at the moment is like pro-n - a standard that isn't formally out nor widely available. You might as well go for the n version.

I looked at your model because I was considering it (think I was looking at the 66 version). What do you have? ADSL? Cable? You need to work out what you want/need. I'm still on ADSL broadband so I'd either need to keep my current ADSL router and connect the new one to it, or find one that has ADSL built in.

Dont know the difference if I'm honest   :embarrassed:

I went based on the fact I have stuff by the manufacturer and the reviews on Amazon

Or do you mean the Asus?? I saw it on Gadget Show the other week  :nerd:

On ADSL; cable / fibre isnt due for the foreseeable future living here in the valleys

I simply want something thats a bit quicker, can easily handle all the stuff I have and improved range throughout the house

This the one you were looking at?

http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-rt-n66u-black-diamond-dual-band-wireless-n900-gigabit-router-7Z7H.html?refs=4294948534

I want something to replace my existing PlusNet supplied Thomson router / modem

Okay so wireless standards started off with 802.11 then it went:

802.11a - 54 Mbps on 5Ghz
802.11b - 11 Mbps on 2.4Ghz
802.11g - 54 Mbps on 2.4Ghz
802.11n - 150 Mbps on 2.4 or 5Ghz
802.11ac - 860 Mbps on 5 Ghz

ac is only in draft mode and most devices won't be ready until 2014. If you buy it, you may then have to buy compatible ac devices in the future to make the most of it and if the spec is changed, you'll have to replace it anyway so not really worth the effort.

A router is designed to send info between devices, and most wireless routers do just that - they connect to computers/ipads/iphones/playstations etc wirelessly and can transfer data. But some come with a built in ADSL modem, some have a cable modem built in, and the rest don't have either.

Your options are to buy just a router and plug that into your Thompson box. The Thompson box connects to the internet and passes the info on to the router which then transfers it around to your devices. It means an extra box that has to have a power socket so I prefer routers that have built in ADSL or cable modems.

If you want to stick with asus, the only one they do with ADSL is the DSL-n55u. That'd be the one I'd buy if I wanted asus.

That's the one I was looking at but it doesn't have a DSL router built in.

You would need to look at this one:

Ive got TP Homeplugs so i may look at their offerings too. I only picked up on Asus through what I saw on the Gadget Show a couple of weeks back

I would look at dual-band n-routers and make sure they come with ADSL modems built in. Read reviews esp performance and signal strength. No point buying a superduper router if the signal can't penetrate out of the room.

You could (in theory) plug your Thomson box into a homeplug and then plug another homeplug into a non-dsl router and still get good signal transfer.

This one is very good. just installed mine yesterday and has improved my network immeasurably. connection is rock solid. Have heard of some reliability issues with the asus n55u, especially regarding the firmware!

So the router and homeplug turned up today......

Homeplug is going back as its very poor   the signal is no better than the router which is in the other room; very disappointed by its performance. I tried switching channels to be see if things would improve but alsa no

The router....jury is out on this at the moment  :undecided:  speeds via my iPhone and Ipad do seem improved using the 5ghz band.

Using my laptop on the 2.4ghz band the signal strength is not really any better than the PlusNet router  :undecided:  download speeds seem OK but I was hoping for a stronger connection  :undecided:

Im extrmely limited as to where i can put it due to the previous owner.  My master socket for example is UNDER the radiator in our bedroom

Some of the high end ASUS routers are the daddy tried afew in hong kong and they are very strong using higher Ghz frequencies.
