Title: Electrical/Ignition Problem?
Post by: golf cabry on 15 October 2003, 00:38
I have an annoying electrical problem with my 91 mk1 golf gti convertible. The power supply that becomes live when the key is inserted i.e. gives power to the radio and the electric hood keeps losing power. The only way I can stop the loss of power is to hold the part where the key slot is, tightly to the ignition barrel. Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers

Take all the trim off under the steering wheel and have a look if anything is loose.

The problem seems to be hidden within the key barrel and holding the unit together by pushing the key in completes the electrical circuit. There is a gap approximately 15mm down the unit from where the key is put in and when this gap is closed, the electrics work fine. Problem is, I have to hold it together to get anything to work!

Cannot understand why I am not loosing power to things such as the heater and rear window heater as they are powered through the ignition switch are they not?
