The video has a GTI being reviewed without the red stripes.
At 3 in minutes he mentions it has no red stripe because it doesn't come with the performance pack!!
Is this an Irish thing (review is in Ireland) or just lazy research?
-
Lazy research. No xenons as standard in Ireland and the standard halogens don't have the stripe!
-
So standard Irish GTIs don't get the red stripe?
-
Didn't realise in Ireland it comes with trees for doors! ;)
-
So standard Irish GTIs don't get the red stripe?
Only through the grill, some people might like that!
I spec'd xenons and it wasn't cheap.

Did you order across the border Joe or up North?

I'm in the Republic, so I ordered it here - and therefore had to spec a few bits like the Xenons and 18's just to bring it up to a UK-like spec!
Ordering up north is possible, but I'd have import / VRT (penal Irish motor tax) to deal with and it probably wouldn't be economically viable. Plus I had a trade in.

That's mad the difference for the sake of a few miles up the road! A lot of people from here normally go South to get cars cheaper.
-
It's funny but the mk6 looked a bit ugly without xenons but the mk7 looks at least as good with and without... IMHO of course
-
Personally I love the redline through the headlights. Nice design touch. Looks great in the flesh too.
Can't understand why some folks are that offended by it
-
Same here H5O. I'm so used to seeing it now, I though it looked really odd without the red stripe continuing through the headlights!

Looks better with the two stripes like MK6, or they should have added another....3 Stripes on the grill.
Personally i dont like the stripe through the lights....looks awful
-
I thought the door trim had a red pin stripe or is this only when the lights are on?I am sure I have seen this red but it was a night picture.

It's only noticeably red when lit.

Each unto their own eh?! I think the single stripe looks far sleeker, through the lights or otherwise.

The GTI red lines on my 6 look v.good, however the 7 looks much better with its GTI red line.
-
I'm a big fan of the red line going through the lights, the thing i don't like is that the red line is part chrome! WTF??
-
I just dont think they are making the GTI stand out enough as it is. Exterior wise, if you put the GTI wheels on the 1.4 GT, they look very similar.
Where is the wow factor, Like "OMG, look at that sexy GTI over there"
What will it be next time...no stripe?
Follow the heritage and keep it two stripe.
-
What's nower days?

What do you mean follow the heritage? The mk1 and 2 had one line all the way round, the mk3 and 4 didn't have one at all and the mk5 only had one, i don't think it's a big deal tbh.

Yeah but one line all the way around is really two lines, one top, one bottom.
Anyways, its only my humble opinions. As always, everyone is welcome to their own

You lost me, one is really two?

I think he means a complete border that surrounds the front grille, so I kinda' get what he means, but still think one line is a much sleeker look!

When one becomes two

Oh yeah    heh heh
...
Ahem.
Yeah I get what you are saying, I also think they should have been just a little bit more adventurous with the styling.
-
I know, all i was really saying at the start is, you should be able to spot the GTI a mile away, and not just be able to spot it by wheels (which can be changed) and one thin red line.
GTI is suppose to be a HOT Hatch...not a MK7 golf with more BHP. I just think VW played it a bit safe.
(ill still probably still get one in 3 years time...lool) But would love to see the MK8 much more arresive compared to standard model.
-
Red stripe at the front. The lights at the front.
The wheels from the side. GTI badge from the side.
The twin exhausts from the back. The GTI logo on the left and lack of logo on the right hand side of the back.
Not sure what else you need to identify it as a GTI other than maybe either sticking a big flag on the car or maybe a trip to specsavers??

The body kit should be slightly larger. Doesn't even look like it has side skirts. Not much larger mind, bit a little bit.
-
I actually like that it doesn't stand out from the crowd too much. I'm not buying the car to show off to the world and make a statement, I'm buying it for me, and couldn't really care less if people do or don't know what it is!
Matchboy, don't forget the GTI badge on the front grille and also the larger roof spoiler with piano black underside and side wings (or whatever they are called!)

Yep, those as well!
I agree, the GTI stands out enough to tell it apart from the rest of the Golf range, I couldn't care less if people know what it is or isn't! Anything else would make it too garish eg Focus RS
-
Err the roof spoiler is very small. One of the first things I thought when I saw it in person was that it was tiny.
We've been over this before I'm sure, no one is looking for a overblown show off machine, I'm talking about it being just a tiny bit more aggressive though. Just a little bit. Details like badges don't do it for me, if anything they are purely show off items. I like to have the nice wheels, and a body kit such that people look and think "hmm, that Golf looks good... Dunno why, but its nice!"

It's all too easy to make the car look tacky or bit too 'try hard'. I think the MK7 GTI has just the right balance, it separates itself well from the regular golf with it's bigger bumpers, hexagon grills, rear diffuser sideskirts, looks lower and wider and much more masculine than the MK6. The lights make it stand out too, as not many will be stumping up for those one regualr models. I think it looks pretty special, without being shouty, something the GTI has always done well in my opinion.
-
Personally I'd add an inch all round, spoiler and body kit. An inch is far too little to get into tacky territory. Would make the car look much more exclusive though rather than just another golf variant... IMO of course.

I'm not sure how making the bumpers even bigger and adding a halfords style spoiler will make it look more exclusive...IMO

You guys seem to think that any change proposed means maximum chav-age. Im talking about a small change!! Nothing even remotely close to a VXR for example.

So small that we wouldn't be able to notice the difference!

Tiny relative to what? The non-existent one on a standard Golf?
With all due respect, whenever a topic gets brought up that has been discussed before, we don't need reminding about it every time. In an active forum full of members that are passionate about the topic and their decision, threads will get duplicated and topics will come up across seemingly unrelated threads.
That said, to be honest badges don't really do it for me either. However, I think that as a car it's perfectly understated, yet different enough from a standard golf in all of the ways listed previously.

The front of the Mk5 is the most aggressive looking of all. They've scaled it back in the 6 & 7.

Perhaps but it now looks dated

Of course it looks dated. Still looks good though!

bet you could spot a MK5 GTI further away than a bland MK7 GTI

I would have to spot it further away cause it would be left for dead against the MK7

The MKV GTI still has the best looking nose of the 5/6/7 IMO. It's distinctive and shouts GTI, whereas the MK7 front end styling has played it too safe. I say that as one who has owned each mark.
A clean MKV GTI is still a superb looking car.
Just my opinion of course and I love my new MK7 but the mk5 was that little bit special and neither the 6 or 7 quite have it in the same way.

I just think people have strong feelings about the MK5 as it was a return to form after the dreadful mk3 and mk4.
-
Going by the reactions I've encountered so far, people who know their cars, know that they are looking at something different when they see the mk7 GTI so it's definitely differentiating itself from the mk6
-
As a current owner of a clean and well looked after Mk5 GTI, I must admit that its nose is definitely more aggressive and distinctive than the Mk6 or Mk7. However, the rear end is a bit ugly (huge black bumper!), not much improved on the Mk6 with the massive rear light clusters! I think that as an overall car design, the Mk7 feels more understated, but at the same a bit more consistent if that makes sense. Having said that, there is definitely enough different about it to stand out from the Mk6 and other standard Golfs.
I'll miss it for sure, but with the clean lines, improved performance, more comfortable ride, and level of technology inside, it's time to move on :)

Mk5 more aggressive than the Mk7?
Can't see it myself
-
To be fair, you didnt pick a bog standard one (and a bag angle loool) this makes it look better:

Yup, I stand by what I said, I think the front-end of the Mk5 is more aggressive.

Can't agree with this, although i love the shape of the mk5 compared to the 7 i just want to give it a cuddle! It's not aggressive in the least, it's cute! :)
-
I agree. MK5 nose is distinctive and aggressive, immediately identifiable as a GTI over its lesser versions. MK6 and 7 noses are far more subtle but the overall shape and silhouette of the 7 (less MPV-ish) is better.
-
Not even sure why people are talking about the front end its not too bad....Shouldnt it be a topic on the rear end? Ugly set of rear lights and very tame looking diffuser?

Lol, we can't talk about ugly rear lights mate! You've upgraded to LED's and i've just took a set off mine, the mk6 early tails were hideous! ;D

True. Laziest design of all time. They basically took the lights off a Toureg and didn't even bother to scale them down a few sizes! Hideous.
-

We're not saying it's bad, just "different", as in more or less aggressive and distinctive than previously, depending on whether you want to hug it or run from it
-
We should just call it a draw on this topic. Im sure all of us in time will grow to like it, and im sure an aftermarket company will make better lights and 100% sure someone will make a class diffuser.
All MK7 owner / pre-ordered should be able to enjoy their new motor without having to defend it., Im sure you all will anyways. Have fun

Agreed! Though despite what I say about thinking the Mk5 being more aggressive, I actually prefer the Mk7 for it's understated and more balanced looks.
On the subject of looks, on the way to a client site this morning I was playing tag with a Mk7 GTD in CSG. It might have been a bit dirty, but under the clouds it looked a bit dull, and I didn't like the wheels. However, the the brake lights and indicators are something else, absolutely stunning.
