Title: Oil on plugs?
Post by: devilscaff on 18 July 2013, 18:00
I'm getting oil deposits on two of my spark plugs, the plugs are only 500 miles old but look knackered. Also it's been a bit lumpy when cold. Thanks

Have you torqued them up correctly?

No don't have a torque wrench

Try to just nip them up a bit more and see if that cures your problem. Are the threads wet with oil? If so it could be the cam cover gasket.

£10 says it's the cam cover gasket leaking into the plug holes, which is also causing shorting issues which is why it is running lumpy.

That's sounds plausible it looks quite simple to change the rocker gasket or am I being over confident?

Simple job, just make sure it's properly clean and zig-zag around the bolts WITH a torque wrench - if you over-tighten them it will leak again.

Have a look at the distributor as well - they are notorious for oil leaking into them.

It's a new car, it's clean already, numbnuts.  Leave it alone and go and do something more positive with your life, like changing your rocker cover gasket on your Golf2.
