Title: mk4 1.6 petrol burnt valve problems

my engine 1.6 aus had a burnt valve replaced due to missfire but now smokes badly on start up grey smoke.it will clear  quite a lot when driving but smokes again in low gears or when pulling off at lights .did not smoke before the valve was replaced .what has caused this and what can be done to fix or do i need a new engine :sad:

hi it sounds like your valve stem seals have started leaking or if they were replaced. were they fitted properly or was it cheap seals that are failing already?

i realy dont know i just brought it cheap and was told the history of what has been done to the engine .i think i will just replace the engine  if i can find one at a reasonable price

ah I see. I thought you had the repairs done on car. you could just stick on an exchange reconditioned head if the bottom end is ok. that's what I would do if I was planning on keeping it. suppose if you find a decent enough second hand engine its not a lot more work to swap the whole thing over.

car runs fine its just the smoke on start up .shame realy as the rest of the car is great for a 13 yr old car .i paid a little over scrap money for it so can afford to spend a bit on it

you could get the valve stem seals changed without taking the head off. some people are not keen on tackling it that way but there is plenty who will. maybe the last owner changed the whole head without putting new seals in it first?
