What sort of price should I be looking to pay a garage to install a 2.0 16v engine, gearbox and wiring loom etc
That not to surply, just fit. Had a couple of quotes but not sure what the norm is.
-
Well it will just be labour, so by asking around you should get an idea how how long a garage will take, all should be similar, then its just labour rates. My local garages charge £40/h
-
it also depends what model of golf you got. for example converting a driver will cost more than a gti. what kind you got anyway?
-
How "long is a piece of string" springs to my mind....
Hour rates will also depend on what issues they come across when fitting it.
Is the new engine sound? are You Sure?????
-
I have got a 8v gti.
Not got an engine yet was wanting to see what the prices were to fit one before buying anything. Sort of wishing I had bought a 16v from the start now and would of just got that reconditioned and tweaked.
Going to see a local performance garage that deal with rebuilding engines and conversions see what they recommend.
-
Could you do half yourself then let the garage finish up. Might cut the costs down. You can probably remove the engine yourself, then just leave them with fitting a new one and the new loom. Is it not also easier to just buy a 16v straight up. Insurance will be stupidly high for any type of engine conversion. If your gunna do one do a big one so its worth the extra money. 20vt?
-
Wouldn't no were to start with doing it myself
Just got back from the garage and the bloke there recs the best route to go for would be the 2l 8v and run it carbs and tune it, he said he would easily be able to get 150bhp+ from it. Price wise he said 2k to fit and tune and for me to surply engine gearbox etc
-
Fuel economy will be crap and may have reliability issues so dont waste your time with that.
Add 2k to the value of your car (ie if you sold it) and see what you can buy .. I think there's a couple of G60 conversions out there for 3k and you'll get a very nice ABF conversion for less than 3k..
If you can't do it yourself, don't waste money paying someone else to do what someone else has already done and is selling for a loss...
-
Really don't want to get rid of the car everything is rite about apart from the lack of power. Also got it booked into a body shop in a couple off wks to get a few bits sorted. Really don't no what to do :undecided:
-
just stick a 2.0 8v bottom end on it and run everything else as is.
-
What sort of power would you get from putting a 2.0l bottom end give? The way it's going at the min might just leave it as is.
-
hi the 2litre bottom end doesn't give a load more power just a good gain in torque. done it to my old mk2 and it was pretty lively but not very high revving. you could add a modded head and decent camshaft and get about 130/140bhp.
-
I think the issue is he can't stick a 2L bottom end on himself. Virtually an engine conversion, removing old engine. Rebuild your head onto a 2.0l bottom end. Reinstall engine. You could put a crazy cam on if you wanted which would be pretty straight forward. Also try a new exhaust system however the standard isn't too restricting, you just might get a better noise. Strip some weight? There isn't many ways to make it faster without mechanical work. More air in and more air out= power. Power-weight ratio is the end result.
-
Ultimately it's your cash mate, if you're flush then get a decent conversion done (not some shoddy 8v on carbs job) and enjoy it.
If you dont want to sink a few grand into a 20yr old car (a bit crazy when you look at second hand car prices now, you can buy a lot of car for 3-4k..) then give it a good tune up and enjoy, or flog it and buy one already done :)

Bloke sounds like he's afraid of injection and wiring to me.

Bloke also sounds VERY hopeful and unrealistic on the BHP figures.
-
Well I only payed 1400 for the car but was willing to go upto 4k, so I thought the extra 2600k I had left over would be enough to get it sorted, not so sure now. It's in good nick and was local to me.
Another garage has quoted me 1k to fit a 2l 16v, I just need to get hold of an engine and gearbox.
-
That's more reasonable, you can pick up an abf with all you need for 250ish :)
-
Yeah a grand int to bad. What do I need for conversion apart from the engine gearbox? And where would be the best place to pick one up, eBay?
-
Well I feel am finally getting somewhere, just spoke a bloke local to me who has done a few 2l 16v conversions and is willing to do it, he just needs to talk with his brother as they do them together.
Really seems to no his stuff and says he can have it done in a few days and he will get everything, so all I have to do is drive it to him pick it up a few days later. Nice one  not feeling so pissed off about the whole thing now.
-
did he give you a good price for doing it?
-
ABF's go in pritty quickly and they arn't that expensive
no way is a 2.0 8v in std trim going to make 150 bhp on carb without fetteling to the cyl head.
priceing work on old cars is generaly not done as you don't know what you'll find so if doing the job properly it's not possible if your just going to ignore potential dragons it is but thats wrong.
ABF on abf managment will be cheepest and offer most poke for your pounds, that will present 150+ bhp as it is out the box no fuss no bother all day long and give you 40+ mpg
-

Yeah I think so, he said he can do it for under £1500 and that's to supply everything so I just drive in drive out

Yeah this is def the route I will be going, 40mpg+ that's well good as I do 50miles a day. What sort of bhp would I get if I tweaked the abf? Cams/gas flow/air filter exhaust. Just thinking for future tweaks.
