Hi guys, we all know that the Wolfsburg factory is, or is about to close for a 3 week annual maintenance cycle.
Does anyone know if this means car production stops completely, or will they still be producing albeit at a much reduced capacity ?
-
I think the still work but at a very reduced capacity ie. only billy basic golfs sill continue to be made. No GTIs I'm afraid
-
Do you know it's only basic Golfs, or just it seems likely?
-
I'm sure it's been mentioned either on here or another forum it's any golf other than gti/gtd's

Ah, I suppose it makes sense though. I mean, they are so behind on Golf orders but there is no shortage of GTIs they can't sell them fast enough.
Oh wait...

I had thought of going over to Wolfsburg for a weekend and volunteering to make a start on my GTD. I've got a basic toolkit - adjustable wrench, a couple of spanners and a Philips screwdriver. Can't be that difficult, can it?

Classic! I'll come and join you

Don't they employ robots to do it because they can pay them less than minimum wage and they rarely go on strike?

Didn't you know? There are little people inside those machines!

Downtime slots on 24/7 production facilities normaly have contractors running through the front gate like a tsunami's imminent.
Amazed they are producing anything with the changes that get planned in downtime.

Yes, I used to be one of those contractors at the Ford Transit van plant in Southampton (shutting it's doors for good in a week or 2). Lots of parts stock used to get left on the lines so we used to take the opportunity to put "Turbo", "GLX" and "Tourneo" badges on the back of the fork lift trucks. Ford used to change their lines a lot to "try out" a new way of working - half of the changes didn't work and we'd change them back at the Xmas shutdown. Maybe VW have their lines just the way they want them so it'll be annual maintenance performed only on kit like air-tools, airline compressors, general lubrications and software updates on robots and consoles.
