I thought this was a GTI forum

It's an obvious competitor being based on the new GTI, thought people would be interested to see how it compares to the GTI.

Maybe not for you, but there will be people choosing between them.

Plus the Leon is out soon, Octavia is nice and if you need a bigger car it is a great choice with a lot more room than the Golf.

I sat in 4 different cars at Goodwood on Thursday - sadly no opportunity to drive one though.
It needs to be a good deal cheaper than the Golf given the quality of the interior plastics in my opinion, but I really liked the exterior tailpipe trim finishers, even if the diesel is a 2 on the left, none on the rear dummy

I think it looks lovely!  I'd debadge it though and get the bonnet filled so people didn't know it was a Skoda though  :lipsrsealed:

This makes you sound quite old and sad.  The Octavia has been about around 18 years now.

Given that it's largely Golf underneath of course it's a rival.

I had similar thoughts... about 15 years ago when my Dad threatened to get one.
I now have the previous model of Octavia to this and think it's great. Interior is just as good quality as any of the VWs I've been in.
Granted it's not a direct competitor for the Golf GTI, given that it's a bigger saloon or estate rather than a hatchback, but it would certainly be a contender if you were looking for a new fast-ish car in the £20-25k bracket.
You do get a lot more space in the Octavia than the Golf, but it's slightly smaller than the Passat. So if you have a family or you're a business driver, the Octavia makes a lot of sense.

I would like to see the 3.0l V6 TDI Quattro dropped into the Octavia or Passat...doubt it will happen!
