Title: private plate transfer ?
Post by: simonpolly on 10 July 2013, 18:55
Is anyone transferring their own private plate onto their new car?, if so how are you doing it I have been talking to my dealer and it seems the local DVLA offices are all shutting so all the paper work has to be sent away, it apparently takes 10 working days but I’m not sure how it will all work because you cannot have the plate on two cars at the same time ??  :undecided:

I am no expert on this but I think you would be best to put it on retention well in advance of your GTi being ready, then give the retention document to the dealer in plenty time for it to go on the new motor..

I have a new plate I bought a year ago and will just need to give him the entitlement but I assume the retention document will do the same job..

It is much easier to take your plate off your current car before hand so that the dealer can register the new car using the retention certificate as soon as he is able. It will cost you an extra £25, but well worth it so that you can have it on the new car straight away, and not have to wait any longer. You've all waited long enough for your cars as it is.

My Dad has just changed his car and left it for the dealers to sort out. It took over 2 weeks to get the plate put onto the new car.

You get a years retention when you buy a new plate, so make sure it's still in date. You may need to pay another £25 if the first year has run out before your new car is ready to receive it.

The only trouble with this is I will have to go to the trouble of buying some new plates, could I have the new car with a new plate and keep the old plate on my part exchange until the day I part exchange it in,then retain the plate from that day ?

The office in Shrewsbury closes on 31st October.

You'll need this form https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-transfer-or-retain-a-vehicle-registration-number your V5, tax disc number and MOT certificate. They will deal with it, and in due course send you a replacement V5, tax disc and MOT with the new reg number for your current car, and a retention certificate to give to the dealer to register your new one.

If you want new plates without the hassle of going through the usual bumpf, let me know when you know what your new number is.

I have just put my plate on retention . It took about 8 days . They sent me a new number to fit onto my Audi  along with a new tax disc until my gti arrives . My VW dealer gave me a set of plates with the new numbers on for my Audi when I gave them the retention certificate for my reg . They will then register the Gti on own plate .

What about the insurance do you just ring them up and tell them the plate has changed ?

Sorry Simon, I replied why you were asking another question.

Once your plate has been taken off your old car and a new number issued, you must display the new number. It has to correspond with the tax disc, MOT and V5. Also, you'll need to notify your insurers.

I got the date off the interweb somewhere a while back.

Yes just phone the insurance and tell them what date you are swapping over to the new reg plate , so wait until you have the new number and tax disc then phone the insurance .you get about 3 weeks to put your new plates on because the paperwork to authorise the new plates  to be made up has an expiry date

From Dealer( I think this will take two weeks min)
Spoken with the DVLA, they have said the best way for them at the moment without retaining the number plate is to have all the paperwork in place for example the registration document, MOT and copy of tax disc, and sending these all off directly to the DVLA in Swansea with a V55 form. This can only be done when the car lands in the UK as the V55 document would be needed to register the new car in the UK. This would then mean your current car would stay on that reg plate until you collect the new one, but may mean we have to wait about a week after the car is on site for the DVLA to get the paperwork back to us.

They have told me the process would usually take 10 working days, but hopefully if we get this all in place and sent off as soon as we can it would be done quicker.

If we just retained your number plate before hand, the DVLA said the car would be issued with a 2009 plate and should not be driven round with  ? on as that would not longer be attached to the car.

Hope that explains it enough for you, if you could get the paperwork to us in August some time this would leave us enough time hopefully to get the paperwork organise with the DVLA.

Many thanks

I

Here you go https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dvla-local-office-closure-plan-announced Shrewsbury to close on the 25th October.

I'd still do it myself beforehand. I slight ball ache, but better than waiting for the postman every morning not knowing when you can pick your new car up.

Yes I think your probably right,I don't know what DVLA shrewsbury are doing for the next 3 months because they have already stopped doing the plate transfer and their not supposed to shut until oct 25th .
cheers for advise chaps I will give it some thought

EDIT The dealer offered to do this for me but he confused me a little ,they are paying for the transfer as part of the deal so I`ll take the paper work to them and let them deal with it

Luckily my dealer is doing the donkey work regarding the swapping over of my plates! In his words "I have the pleasure of sitting in the dvla office for a few hours swapping the plates over".

Unconfirmed BW36, so if I get that BW I should hopefully be looking at the end of September begining of October. Local dvla closes 31st October (didn't know it was closing until reading these posts).. Might see the dealer to get mine on retention sooner rather than later (not sure they are aware of the closure).

Hi Simon,

I'm doing a similar process. I've never had a new car registered straight to my plate before I always have it registered to its allocated plate and then swap it a couple of weeks later.

Here's what I'm doing / done in preparation for my new GTI

I've put my private plate on my current car onto retention, this is £105 for a 12 month retention. For this you fill out a form and send some documents to the DVLA. 2 weeks later you will get back a letter with the new allocated plate for the car + a tax disc with that plate on and also a certificate which will allow you to get plates made up for that registration. 4 weeks after you receive these you should receive back a new V5C document with the new registration for the vehicle (however I got this the same time as the replacement tax disc). You also receive a retention certificate for your new plate. *Note at this point when you put on the new plates + tax disc you must inform your insurance**

So now I have my current car back on its allocated registration, my private plate is on retention (retention certificate) My new GTI will be registered on whatever plate it is allocated, 13 / 63. Once I have the vehicle I will fill in its plate onto my retention document and send that off to the DVLA, this tells them I want to put my private plate onto that car. (No more payment at this point, the £105 covers taking the plate off 1 car and putting it onto another). So then for my new GTI I should receive a replacement tax disc 2 weeks later with my private plate on. I can then get plates made (if not already) and fit them to my car + my new tax disc. Then inform my insurance of the change.. A new V5C document should also follow a few weeks later.

I find this process easier, as I normally get the dealer to give me the private plate made up for my new car as part of the deal so I don't have to fork out to get those made and it also means in the future when I come to sell the car I already have its original plates made up on physical plates too so again no need to fork out getting them made :)

Chris,

When the dealer makes up your private plate does the plate have dealer advertising on it?

Hi Craig,

Yes they do, but that's probably just because I've never specified for them not to, mostly because I'm a bit of a weirdo and I quite like a dealer name on the plate  (providing its a VW dealer on a VW car etc, not Audi on a VW etc)
