Title: newbie with problems
Post by: greener on 08 July 2013, 22:01
Hi there
I bought a mk3 8v and I need some help/ideas.
It ran for a couple of weeks then started cutting out then completely died.
I've changed the distributor,  throttle body, crank sensor, plugs and leads, even tried a different ecu and fusebox in it but it still wont work, it will start then it will rev and dip then cut out .
I really like the car and dont want to get rid, anybody got any suggestions.
Cheers

ah right. there is quite a few running faults they suffer from. but first thing I would try is removing throttle body and give it a good clean and see if that helps. oh does the car start up straight away after it cuts out???

Hi yeah it starts up straight away after, the throttlebody has been replaced and was pretty clean before I installed but I will try that , thanks

was the throttle body replaced because of this problem? or did problem start after? and do you have to press throttle to restart car?

I replaced the throttle body after the problem started , no starts normally aftrwards.
It will idle at the moment for a little, but as soon as u press the accelerator and get to about 2000 revs it cuts and dips

if you start it and leave it idling. will it stay running until you hit the gas?

Yes most of the time

well I had a problem with my mk2 a couple months ago. when started from cold it would idle fine for as long as I wanted. but as soon as I hit the throttle it would misfire and cut out. then wouldn't start again for about 15 mins. turned out the pressure relief valve in the oil pump was stuck. was fine at idle when the pump was turning slowly but as soon as it was revved the oil pressure would shoot up and overpressurise the hydraulic lifters and keeping the valves open. so I would get an oil pressure test just to be sure. it may not be your issue but there is a chance.

Ok cool,  ive been told that the oil pressure was ok but im thinking about getting another garage to have a look, will ask them to check that, yeah tried with maf disconnected still same problem.
Thanks

its been a bit elusive this fault eh. have you tried a different throttle position sensor? also check all your pipes and hoses very carefully for air leaks. and check your wiring to sensors for breaks or corrosion.
