Title: Bit the bullet.. ordered today!
Post by: drisser on 06 July 2013, 18:31
I could resist no longer, after looking at the configurator all afternoon, I engaged 2 dealers in an email discount war all afternoon yesterday until one just wound me up..

So I went to the other today to spec up a car and ordered-

3 door manual
Carbon Grey
Performance pack
Winter pack
Panoramic roof.

Managed to resist all other options for the time being.

Managed to secure a discount of around £2500 which is about 9% I think, net price around £26,200 I think.  Could have got better on the Internet but my local dealer was good to work with and they gave me the 3 hour test drive.  They also underwrote my bmw 330ci with a decent trade in value for oct / nov delivery.

Not sure when the car will likely arrive but I guess now the pondering starts.. Did I spec it right, shall I change color etc !  It's my birthday on 1 dec so as long as its there for that.

By the way I saw a normal golf in limestone grey as I was tempted, but oh, no it is not a good colour in the flesh IMO.  Very washed out a bit pale, really think it looked better in pics.  My advice, if you are going for anything other than white, red or black make sure you see something in the flesh.

Really excited now, they also confirmed that the low rate finance runs until end of the year as long as you order by September, plus  managed to get the obligatory full tank of fuel thrown in

Can't wait, has been a long time since I had a brand new car and this new golf really ticked all the boxes.

You should ask the supplying dealership how many he's already got on order for people. If you're his first or second, you might get it sooner than you think (based on dealership allocation assumptions).

Funnily enough I did ask how many gti's he had sold I think it was 5 so far, he reckoned maybe it would be here October but for once I am not in a huge rush !

Although I am sure after 3 months of looking online at everyone here carping how nice their new car is  :lipsrsealed: i Will be more impatient.

The dealer said to me how about going to pick up the car from Germany.. Might just do that !

I thought you couldn't do that from UK - wasn't there previous confirmation that it wasnt possible due to customs, dvla etc??

Also even if it s an option, not sure November or dec drive to Germany will be so much fun !

Ps

Did anyone else mull over 3 or 5 door for a while ?  I don't currently really need 5 doors and I think the 3 is a tad more sporty looking... But am a bit worried the 5 door will be more practical long term..

5 door is far better for practicality but 3 door just looks that bit nicer IMO. If you carry lots if passengers then 5 door would be the one to go for but if not then def 3 door

Everything you said is right.  You gotta pick what you like most.  I went for 5 because I think the 3 is only a tiny bit better looking whereas the 5 is a lot more practical.  Everyone will be different in this respect though...

Hi Andy, I got it the very next day. However, you must remember its an estimated build week NOT confirmed. That will come further down the line. It could move forward or back.

Hope that helps

Andy,

I changed my order from three (the best looking) to a five door (most practical) as we have a new baby on the way soon. Imagine what a pain it would be to lift the baby in and out of a three door car. The missus just wasn't happy so I changed my order. Plus, I've enjoyed a "true" three door coupe for the last four years and loved it. So, now its time for a change.

It all depends what you need from a car. Just think how practical a five door GTI is day-to-day. Hard to beat

It is possible for UK customers, but VW can't be arsed unless you're buying a Phaeton. German, Dutch, Austrian, Polish and Czech customers can do this for pretty much any Wolfsburg produced VW.

H5

This is my dilemma, the 3 door is fine for me just now but would hate to have to get rid in the future just because I needed 5 doors.  That said I don't have any baby on the way yet so guess that's at least a year of 3 door pleasure !

I was planning to keep this car a while though so it does make me ponder if 5 doors is more sensible lo term..

Argh wasn't expecting my first spec dilemma so soon after ordering  :undecided:

Andy,

It's all down to personal circumstance. The three door is the best looking, no doubt about it, but the five door is still very handsome & practical too. It wasn't until I test drove the five door last week that I changed my mind. Well, that and missus and the impending baby

I don't think a single dealer has ordered a 3 door demo car so its impossible to compare in the metal.

The thing is if you hardly ever carry passengers then the three door is the one to go for, and its cheaper too

Various dealers have 3 door demo cars - seen quite a few pics on this forum. :-)

Ironically both the cars I drove were 3 door I didn't see a dealer with a 5 door demo !
