Title: Suspension "spacer"
Post by: Waspy on 05 July 2013, 18:44
So I have bought springs and shocks to replace the coilovers on my mk2. I have been told, by a mechanic, that I need a "spacer" for each corner. Described as going between the spring and shock *I think*. Anyone any idea what he is talking about? Like what would you say if you thought "suspension spacer"?

Cheers guys

Cheers mate, I had a look at these diagrams a little earlier to see if I could figure it out. But nothing added up. Basically he quoted me £100 for whatever it is he needs direct from VW, which just sounds wrong. £25 a corner?

Feel like I am getting ripped off.

Literally the struts/shocks and springs. Plus whatever is still on the car from the previous coilovers.

ah maybe he means the spring top caps as they most likely are different on the coilovers. basically the metal piece that goes between the top of the spring and the strut top mounting.

That should come with the suspension you brought. I did what you have done in the opposite way a few months back, the only thing the coilovers and original suspension shared was the top mounts. The spring cup should keep the spring compressed with a nut that goes above the bearing, part 10 on the front suspension diagram.

There can be no spacer on the front suspension meaning that he would be charging £50 per rear corner. Sounds dodgy as f**k, is it still at the garage or are you able to post a pick of your rear suspension

i would get the mechanic to order in the bits he thinks you need. and you get a pic of the bits and post it here before you go ahead and get the work done?

I would say its number 7 in the picture for the rear suspension and number 8 for the front.

It is currently at the garage. Going by what sgt lemon said, he will need everything bar the top mounts. So yeah, ill make sure to ask the exact parts he has used/ordered.

I uprated by top mounts to mk3 ones (just the rubbers) £30 for all 4 corners but your car will have definitely already had these.

yeah but you need the spring top plates and the mk3 springs if your converting to mk3 top mounts. well with the basic non coilover set up. the rears are same on mk2/mk3.

Has he even started the work yet? If its the spring top plates he is missing they he can't have gone near the car yet with the suspension, there is nothing keeping the spring on and compressed without that part. If you buy a shock and spring as a unit then the cup should already be attached.

he is swapping from coilovers to the standard set up. so the coilovers im guessing have a different spring top cap and wont fit the standard suspension design. nah when you buy a kit of shocks and springs that is all you get. no spring caps/top mounts/nuts or top plates.

He has started the work. I didn't realise coilovers shared so few parts with a shock/spring set up.

if the original top mounts are on the car then all he should need is the spring top plates front and rear.

No the spring caps should come with the shocks, it's is what holds the spring to the suspension and has nothing to do with car mounting. Atm he has done zero labour if he is missing the spring cap so regardless of what part is missing the guy is lying. Get him to take photos of what he thinks is missing. I may be removing my rear suspension tomorrow to change the top mounts, will take photos.
