I am really struggling to get an answer pro Mk7 GTI on looks alone.
There are design details that I feel impact negatively on its aesthetics:
(1) Its nose, where I find the extra protuberance of the front bumper is very Bruce Forsyth
(2) the continuation of the red design detail through the headlights is a bit kitsch
(3) the ultra narrow profile of the grille gives the car a very tight lipped odd look
(4) the rear tail lights look very Audi Q5 and seem too narrow to suit the chunky rear that is a Golf. (The LED tails on the Mk6 GTI are certainly better looking and more Golflike).
From the many reviews, the Mk7 Golf and the Mk7 GTI in particular are purported to be better to drive than the Mk6. This is termed as progress and one should expect this. (However, Evo Mag felt that the Mk6 GTI was more involving).
To those of you who might be apoplectic with rage that there is this faintest criticism of the Mk7 GTI, I extend the hand of friendship and beg you not to banish me to the Audi Forums.

General opinion is that it looks sharper than the six. I have one and I agree. The seven looks SHARP!

I think pretty much the opposite. No surprise as I'm getting one. The MK7 looks much more masculine, lower and wider, it's lost that tall and ungainly look the MK6 had. The MK6 GTI is a handsome car, but IMO the MK7 is just more classy and stands out more from the regular MK7. The lights, front and rear, look much better than MK6 and are a big leap forward IMO. If you prefer the MK6, then great, no hard feelings, can't wait to chip mine in when I get the MK7

Same answer as in the Mk6 section:
I'd need to see a Mk7 GTI next to my Mk6 GTI to compare...
But my old man has just picked up a Mk7 GT and every time I see it, I think what a cracking looking car it is.
I never thought that of a 'cooking' Mk6 Golf.

Yes, just

scary but ive just had a similar discussion with someone myself and said the exact same as you.
I dont like the red line in the lights, doors or the smaller rear lights. It makes me prefer the GTD from tbe front.
I really really wanted to like it but these to me are just not as good looking at the present time. Im sure it will grow on me though.
What I do really like is the 3 doors side window profile it makes it look a little more like the mk1s window shape.
-
All personal opinion I guess, but I think it looks better from every angle. The rear lights especially were pretty naff on the Mk6 Golf, which is kinda' what put me off getting one. I wanted a GTI that I was totally happy with, because even on the Mk5 I have now I don't like the ugly black bumper at the back!

My reply as in mk6 section
1. Don't mind bumper itself but find the bonnet looking a little too long. It'll soon be as long as a bmw 1 series
2. Agree
3. Think it looks fine, but hate the ADC sensor
4. Totally agree. I was driving behind a mk7 (not a gti) yesterday for a few miles and got a good look at it. The tail lights look very small and undersized. I am surprised at how small the entire rear of the car looks and this is emphasised by the tiny lights. Quite liking the sharper lines though.
Also looks quite a bit lower at the rear than the mk6, which I like.

No contest:

Especially the rear of the Mk7.
-
I had a MK6 GTD and now a MK7 GTI.
I think the MK6 is still a great looking car and there are some aspects of the MK7 design that don't sit right with me, but I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.
I quite liked the kicked-up rear windows in the 3 door mk6, I'm still not sure about the straighter lines of the rear windows in the mk7!
I liked the grill in the mk6 with the twin chrome/red stripes. I'd agree that the grill in the new car isn't quite as pretty. The mk6 grill was also gloss black, it's plain old matt black in the mk7.
Where there can be no doubt though is the interior. The MK7 interior is leagues ahead of the mk6 in every way... Apart from the seat headrest design, I preferred the seat headrests in the mk6.

Hated the MK6, was an easy option to get the Scirocco. They took the MK5 and softened it everywhere, made it seem a bit of a girly option to me, and those oversized rear light clusters?!?
MK7 is much better - harsher, sharper, meaner. Those lines make it look a lot more muscular and the front end looks a lot better too - not as mean as a Scirocco but getting there - it scowls at you whereas the MK6 smiled at you.

Just shows how people see differently:
I have a 5 and 6...and the 5 is soft and round and a bit flowery next to the 6, in my eyes.
A perfectly good car...just a bit bland compared to the 6.
I'm still not sure of the 7 GTI's front...I don't like the red line through the lights, but will reserve judgement until I've seem one in the metal.

They look much much better in the flesh than they look in photos, trust me on this!

I agree. The MK5 is softer looking because it is rounder, just compare the front end of the 5 & 6 together.
I do like the MK7 but the prefer the rear LED's on the MK6.

I loved the MK6 LEDs but the mk7 LEDs move things up another notch! Have you seen them in action on a GTI/D? The indicators in the mk6 weren't led. In the mk7 they are and flash the entire width of the cluster. Extremely cool!

Maybe its the shape of the lights?
-
I prefer the mk7 - looks more aggressive from the front. And I prefer the new lights. Personally, I think it makes the mk6 look slightly outdated - which I suppose is the point with a new car.
Interior wise - no contest; again you'd expect this.
As for Evo magazine....

I love everything about the Mk 7. It just looks 'right' from every angle.
Somehow reminds me of an Alfasud I had many many years ago. BTW, that is still one of the best handling cars I've ever driven. If the Golf can make me smile the way that one did I'll be more than happy

Yup, I'll agree with that. On my Mk5 I don't like the black bumper at the rear, and on the Mk6 I don't like the rear light clusters. With the Mk7 though, I think it looks great from every angle, inside and out.

There's a mk 5 GTI that goes up the A10 on my (old) route back from work - he's retro fitted a new bumper that's colour coded the same as the rest of the car ie. replacing that horrible grey plastic bit - it makes it look like a totally different car, it looks quality.

I always thought that looked terrible anytime I saw a MK5 with the lower bit painted. Too much of a bulbous arse on the car if the whole thing is painted one colour.
What does look good though is the few MKV GTI's I've seen where they left the lower-most part of the valence unpainted, the bit around the exhaust, or even better, painted gloss black. That does look well IMO.

Golfs aren't really pretty. They're a bit dull. They spend ages designing them to look dull.
When the mk6 was released the iconic mk5 suddenly looked a bit dated. Now the mk7 is released the mk6 looks dated.
It's not prettiness, it's the cool design features that make the mk7 so much better than the mk6.
The things that I like about the mk7 GTI best are the little bold lines in the metal that remind me of the fact this car actually looks like those pencil renderings the car designers submit when they first pen the styling exercises for the new model. The only thing missing from the finished article is the 20 inch alloys and zero gaps between the tyre and wheel arches!!
I love the 3 door design on the mk7. So much so that I have insisted on a 3 door despite needing a 5 door. With some big wheels the mk7 is going to look darn near as cool as a Scirocco but without the Scirocco's shortcomings (and it's bulbous derriere).
In fact my only reservation about the mk7 GTI is that the mk7 R will be a trouser tenting moment...

Agreed, the back of the Mk 6 was better but the GTI/D of the Mk 7 is sooo much better

That'll be the Edition 30's, without doubt the best looking version of the 5 imo, especially with the BBS Pescara wheels as well, love em! :P

Coming home today in usual A14 stop start and was level to a brand new pure white Golf 7 in the adjacent lane. it was not a GTI but still looked very very nice and made the several other mk6 cars I passed look like yesterday's design. I often find each new Golf takes a bit of getting used to but there is simply no question that the 7 is better looking than the 6. I suspect those who don't agree have only seen pictures because side by side the 7 is better in every way. That or they own a 6 and aren't looking to upgrade!
J/K don't kill me 6ers!
EDIT: Jimbles post reminded me, I passed a black ED30 too and the non GTI 7 was much more of a head turner than that as well. Could be the colour though!
-
I agree.
I remember seeing the MKV for the first time (cooking version) and I hated it. I thought it was a big step back from the mk4. Eventually I bought a MKV gti, easily the best car I've owned. And i still admire a nice MKV GTI anytime I see one.
And then I saw the mk6 and I thought they'd ruined the MKV. And yep, I bought a mk6 and loved that too
VW have a knack of designing a car that perhaps doesn't scream sexy looks at first, but seems to get better looking the more you see it and ages really well! A 7 year old MKV GTI still looks a very fresh modern car. Compare it to an Astra or focus of similar vintage....

Yeah, just last week I was driving home and down a street I saw a white Mk7 parked up, so I drove past it really slowly. The lines of the new car are just so sharp, sits really well on the road. Can't wait to see a white Mk7 GTI in the flesh, although I'm sure it won't be mine first!
-
I still think the Mk6 gti is a fantastic looking car and has aged well. However, when a Mk6 Golf R pulled up by the side of me the other I couldn't help but think it looked a bit dated. I hope they do a much better job with the styling on the Mk7 R.
I feel the Mk7 looks a bit like its been styled by Seat. So not quite sure at the moment until I really get to see one in the flesh.

Funny you should say that. Was following a 13 plate Leon into work this morning and the rear looked kind of familiar... hmm, if only I could place it. :undecided:
Leon actually looks pretty sharp, but I wouldn't swap.

Must admit, I much prefer the new Leon to the old one, especially the rear. Overall though, there is something about the Golfs boxier look and cleaner lines and creases that appeal more to me.

Yes the Leon looks a bit "here today gone tomorrow"...

You're right Bill, the Leon has never really done anything for me in any of its guises.

I too followed a new Leon on the motorway the other day. Very impressed. Looked great, and sporty too. The crease lines looked especially cool.
But, will it date much more quickly than the understated Golf? Only time will tell.
-
I like the Leon. It's no Golf granted, but still a lovely car. And you can get a Leon FR with every single option for £25k
-
I always find that I like the new Leon when it comes out, for about a year. One of the big improvements for me with the MK7 over the MK6 is the rear. The light clusters look great (and not looking like they belong on the Toureg because they're so big) and that crease makes the Golf seem really solid. I always seem to tire of the Leon very quickly.
Not a fan of Seat Interiors either, they're both dull in look and cheap in feel. They have the Audi look about the layout rather than the VW look, yet manage to look and feel like a very cheap imitation. The current Seat steering wheel is hideously cheap looking.
-
I liked the new 3 door Leon from pictures online, but I saw a white FR the other day in the flesh and it looked very mediocre, boring almost.

Yes I concur plus it's a Spanish car, I don't like Spain
