Title: Which Port?
Post by: iainmac on 02 July 2013, 23:23
Apologies if this topic has been covered before.  Just wondering which port our GTD's/GTi's come to?  Also, how often do the boats sail and how long do they take to get from Germany to Uk? Thanks in advance!

I think MH knows lots about this.  IIRC he said they sail every 2 weeks.

However, do they not come to more than one port?

The details of ships coming from Emden with hopefully the golfs on it.

When you look at the amount of visits it makes and the amount of cars the ship can hold (granted not all golfs or GTI's) it shows just what an operation it is with such a quick turnaround.

I work over looking the Able land where most of the cars are off loaded at immingham, it is not uncommon to see a lot of Mercedes blasting up and down Chase Hill Road with trade plates on route to a holding area but not VW, they could of course be using the smaller docking area in Grimsby. I do see a lot of Mk7 on transporters but to this day have only seen 1 GTD and no GTI's, also I would say that 99% of colours seem to be darker greys, light browns and light blues, not a white or red or black in sight!

There are a few ports supplying UK VWs. Sheerness, Tyne and Felixstowe are 3 I know of - there must be one supplying Scotland at least. Some ships stop at multiple ports for car drop off. The ones that supply port of Tyne (city of Amsterdam/city of Rome/city of Paris) seem to come over to Tyne directly from Emden for first drop off.

Sheerness seems to be by far the busiest destination for VW drop offs, your dealer shoould know which port your car will be transported to and from there you can go on your port's website and look for ships that have come from Emden or that are sheduled to come from there. You can then look on Emden's website (once you have a ship name and callsign) to see when they are departing from Emden.

Because of where Emden is situated (between the hook of Holland and the Denmark peninsula) it seems like all UK bound cars will arrive somewhere on the east coast rather than sailing around the channel and up the west coast (Irish cars probably make that route to east coast Ireland). My Scirocco came from Portugal and sailed to Rotterdam. It was from Rotterdam that all the UK cars went to their individual ports.

We've got a fair few North East buyers here - i'd expect all the Tyne + Wear cars (and probably Teesside too) to be coming to port of Tyne.

For the port of Tyne, the 3 ships supplying it seem to be in an 11 or 12 day cycle.

You cant rag the VW's as they are transported in transport mode. Limits speed, revs etc etc. Unless dockside they can take it out of transport mode rag it and then put it back into transport mode your car wont be ragged.

Thats an awesome solution, why didn't I think of that! hehehe

Interesting. When I saw my car when it first landed in the dealers, the MFD said it was still in "Transport" mode.

Mine and monkeyhangers sales guy went to port of tyne to pick monkeys dads gtd up. Could only drive it back at no more than 30mph due to it being in transport mode. Took him longer to drive back than he thought it would.

This makes me very happy.  Its been bugging me that some drivers at the port might be having fun trying to beat each other's 0-60 times in my car before I've even seen it! haha
