Hi
I have just put down a deposit on a Mk5 GTI, collecting it tomorrow. I used to have a Mk4 GT TDI so was a member on the forum from then. I have noticed below comments about being better going for the later models rather than the 05 type of age, just wondered what the reasoning is for this? I am aware that the one I have gone for is limited on toys (in fact has nothing!!) which I assume may be one of the reasons for goign for a later model?! One thing its missing which is something I would have liked is the rear vents. The one Im getting has just got the big cup hiolder in the centre between the 2 front seat. Does anyone know if this can be swapped for the vents easily?
Cheers

Do you mean the centre armrest ?
If so this can be retrofitted

Yep the armrest, will look into it then. Any idea how hard a job it is to swap?

Early GTI's had the original cam lobe, which was made of a softer steel than the later GTI's. the cam lobes tend to wear faster and the cam follower for the high pressure fuel pump used to wear faster as a result.
Also used to have issues with the steering rack creaking, of which most were fixed under warranty.
Have a look in the maintenance section as there is a whole thread of what to look out for when buying a MKV GTI.

Ok thanks for that :) will take a look!! I already have the car so I should have looked at this stuff first!! It does seem good so far though, only done 37k on an 05 which was the reason for going for that age rather than a newer higher mileage one! Going in for cambelt/aux belt and water pump on Monday for peace of mind.

check with vw as my 05 gti had a coil-pack recall  an ended up getting 2 new wings free due to corrosion

Blimey crrosion doesn't sound good! I have the receipt for the coil pack recall to show it was changed but thanks for the heads up anyway :)

yeh thanks for that, I have looked into it a little and can't believe how many people have had these issues! Have checked mine and I have a small patch of rust bubbling on the edge of the wing which somehow I missed when I viewed it so I will have to get in to VW and see what they say!

Plenty on the golfgtimk5forum have had issues and had them fixed under the paint warranty. Have a read of some of them before you go back.
