Title: New job, more money, what to buy
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 29 June 2013, 22:13
I just got the job I had been working towards so will have a lot more income next year. Been trying to set a list of what to get, eventually want to get my golf to a minter (nothing show worthy as its a daily). Will be rebuilding the engine and colouring to make a sexy engine bay; New suspension; BBS RS; induction kit with heat shield. What else would you advise putting on the wish list. Body will be getting some work done also, mainly plastics.

Ditch that induction kit idea. Panel filter is the way

I would stick a new distributor hall sender in as they have a habit of failing without warning. my last mk2 I ran for 6 years and only had 3 breakdowns. hall sender/clutch release finger and main fuel pump. not bad for a car with 138k when I got it.

Stick with OEM all the way... Money will be well spent and you will have a happy car...

I've had mine for 5 years and she has never let me down once... All I do is get her serviced by a specialist every year & only fit genuine parts...

If you want to do her up look at the basics of what fails or fades on a 20-25 year old car...

New grille, new lights, new window rubbers, upgraded headlight loom. Check the tailgate for holes..

Sort the interior, ie bolster wear, carpets, car mats, rear parcel shelf and brackets.

Must have's for me (if money allows) ;Rear headrests (proper ones) electric windows & mirrors.

Other than that just keep on top of it and fix things before they go wrong...

You are driving a "Classic Car" at the end of the day - and if you want to get your money back you have to invest in the 1st place, and then you will have the fun of owning and MAYBE make a few quid at the end.

To me it don't matter what my car has cost or what it s worth as I will never sell it. If my kids decide to sell it when I'm gone thats up to them. but as long as I breath it won't be sold, for any amount of money!

sorry mate but I have to disagree with you there. if you want to make your money back on a mk2 golf(that is if you ever want to sell it) then it needs to be like it left the factory. that's the ones that will make the big money in years to come. but who can resist tinkering lol. only mod I have done to my mk2 so far is change the .89 fifth gear for a .80 out of a mk3 golf 1.4 gearbox. much nicer motorway cruising and not a massive gap like the .75 diesel 5th gear.

Err Thats what I meant by OEM....

Sorry but I make my living from selling MK2 parts - so I Think I have some idea as to what will , and what won't make money in the longer term...

im sorry if I offended you in anyway but that aint why im here. I am simply stating that in the years to come the mk2 golfs that are factory standard are going to go for big money compared to ones that are thrashed to bits.

No offence taken & I didn't take it as such.....

Yes genuine low mileage & un-touched models will always command a very much higher premium, I don't disagree with you.

But these will be much harder to find over the coming years.

If you don't own (or can't afford) one like that the best way to match these cars is to stick with OEM parts and take off all the 80's add on's, and go back to stock! As in Stock OEM.... Just as I  have done...

Mine is high mileage with 175k racked up. I'm not looking to make some money back but just enjoy it while its around and not kill a classic. I think new arches are in order, disappointed in the after market bumper fitted by a garage. Might modify the bumper irons as it doesn't sit in enough.

I have ordered a remote locking kit, would maybe electric sunroof and mirrors be a good investment? It may not be making me any money or keeping the car original but it's more convenient and luxurious. I almost bought mk2 modified heated leather VR6 seats recently.
