So yesterday was the day to collect my car.
What can I say being an owner?
Well after having a banger to run around in for a few weeks its a quantum leap, but over the mk6 GTi I'd also say its a massive leap too!
Car feels so much more eager and handles the road amazing, steering is also sharper for me.
It sounds much better inside than the mk6, I used to think the mk6 sounded like listening to the engine down a drainpipe type noise, the mk7 is much better in that respect.
The tech even for a basic spec is also very good, and the dynaudio sounds good with the new sub too.
One of the best things for me is the seats, they are so comfy, yet supportive, hugging and you can get the perfect driving position for me, low and back.
My down side would be the interior high sheen surfaces, not in looks, pattern or colour, just the fact they are finger print prone, a bit like an iPad screen. If your a bit OCD with cleaning this type of issue, I'm sure it will bug you, but most cars are like this now.
ADC is not as ugly as I thought it may be, and we got demonstrated this tech on handover, its kind of neat in a way. Not sure if it would bug you though when in a Friday rush home and you trying to make small gaps in traffic work! At least you can turn it off, and it seems to make a big difference in insurance premiums!
Saw a new A class amg (not the 45) on the way home that I considered and its not a patch in the looks department.
The GTI is a great all round car I think, with practicality, pace and cred.
Only downside was the wipers, but I've read about this before how they vibrate on the sweep, so will see how this can be fixed.
So pics later, as it needs a wash the weather was terrible yesterday, at least the GTI was not.
Everyone's who's on order will be in for a treat!
Dealer told me his other 2x cars, both white had been put back to late September and October builds, both ordered before mine!

You sound completely chuffed mate  nice little write up too.
Can't wait for the pics Dave.
Is this the first UK mainland, GolfGTIforum.co.uk, customer of a mk7 GTI?
-
Great stuff mate! Glad your a happy bunny, can you tell us if your xenons swivel when you drive it in the dark please?
Happy dayz!!
-
I've covered my windows with "Rain-X" which is a repellant. The water & rain runs right off the windows & it prevents juddering from the wipers.
Worth a go!
-
Congratulations, really pleased for you.
-
nice one look forward to seeing your pics and the barrage of questions put "your way"
-
Congratulations on your car, looking forward to the pictures, good point about the ADC, I have just had a hire car Mk7 GT for a week and while during normal motorway driving it does have its advantages, when you nip into smaller gaps (in a purely safe manner obviously) it dabs on the brakes and actually makes you look like you are driving like a c@ck, I didn't manage to dash around any A roads in it but I have a suspicion that if you are nipping past traffic and get too close as you pull out to overtake it might emergency stop you!!! All that said, I did not realise you can turn it off :nerd:
-
Congrats on your purchase ... you must be well chuffed
and by the way :-
(http://www.klrforum.com/images/smilies/icon_worthless.gif)
We want lots
-
Yeah many congrats Dave!! Hope you get many days of happy motoring in it...
-
Congrats dude, enjoy! Look forward to the pics :)
-
Excellent news. Yes, lots of pictures please. You can't take too many!
-
Congrats on the car you lucky bugger
Like everyone says. Lots of pics please. Give us something to look at while we wait
Also didnt realise the adc could be turned off. It'd be good to know how. I hope its not too intrusive like it was mentioned you dont want it braking when your about to make an overtake else that could surely make things dangerous not safer..
Again congrats hope to see pics :)

Where are our Pic's? It's 12:21 you must have cleaned it by now?

You're so right Bill, but I reckon HA54SYM must have not gotten out of the GTI since he collected it...
-
Sorry for poor quality pics, Grand Prix was about to start and it was the sunniest day of the year, so taking pics was not top of agenda.
I'm always finding an excuse to drive the car though, its an awesome drive!
Best GTi I have had (mk5, ED30, mk6)!
Forgot how hard a DBP is to keep clean, but its looks nice when finished.

That looks brilliant Dave. Nice to see one in black

Gorgeous mate! 8)
-
Well done. I can feel much smugness radiating from the Derby area
-
Looks brilliant.
-
Fine looking machine. Thanks for the pics!
-
These pics don't really do it justice, the DBP looks mint in the sunshine when you can see the pearl.
White would have been my second choice, followed by Carbon.
Still would have wanted a light blue (rising type) however.
I reckon the R, will be something else to be honest.
Dave
-
Love the black look ace...
-
Looks great mate, guessing your local to me looking at the plates. Who did you deal with at TL?

Have you driven it at night yet? Do the headlights swivel?

What brand are the tyres?

Had Phantom Black on a previous Audi and Brilliant on one have now and it is a colour I love obviously to spec it twice but you do have to spend some time on it to have it as it's best as dust, dirt and bird mess show quite readily. But when shining few colours look better.
Your GTI definitely looks great :) with chrome & red highlighted by the black and sure will catch many looks.
-
Ok, answers to questions..... (in no particular order!)
Tyres - Dunlops (not sure what spec sportmaxx maybe) will check if wanted.
Lights - Not driven it at night, but have in a multistory. Not sure if they bend actually, but in the setting you can change the mode of them, so I think they do, but deffo not as much as my Mondeo. PS inside at night is awesome, with the mood lighting and red accents. Pity the sunblind mirrors are not led bulbs though?
Dealer / TL Darby - I dealt with James, have done for last 3 or 4 cars. I cannot fault TL Darby at all, would give them 100% on any survey, and I have no links with them. Great service, information, and always get a fair treatment.
Ask me anymore as you wish.
Dave
-
Do the seats have the GTi emblem stitched into them ?
Is your car manual or dsg?
What are the paddles made out of please
cheers
-
Thanks mate, with great power comes great responsibilty!!
Are the interior courtesy lights bright enough? The pics i've seen so far seem like they don't cast much light.

Hi Dave,
Just a quick question
Did you find out how to turn the ADC off?
Thanks
-
Wow, I have had a few post Grand Prix drinks here but....
Do the seats have the GTi emblem stitched into them ? - No, they are just Tarten cloth. I didn't like the look of the head rests compared the mk6, but hey the seats are super, super comfy.
Is your car manual or dsg? - Manual
What are the paddles made out of please - Don't know it a manual.
Are the interior courtesy lights bright enough? The pics i've seen so far seem like they don't cast much light. - No, and from what I remember there is no setting for them, like there was in the mk6. I'm not sure its a major issue, in the footwell etc, but the upper level (dash and upper doors) really look amazing!
Did you find out how to turn the ADC off? - To be honest I don't know now. I said you could, but there are so many settings its a bit OTT. You can turn the stop start / off by the gear lever, but I will look if you can turn the ADC fully off.
Electric parking brake, it really takes some getting used too, seems to not want to disengage sometimes when on a hill.
Dave

Looks proper bad-ass in black
Enjoy!
-
Looks 'freakin' Awesome !!! Didn't expect it to look so 'Good' in Black Pearl, but it does... Happy Motoring...
-
Looks stunning
... I've still not seen one on the road yet, I expect you'll get a lot of envious looks driving it for the next few months ... as well as on here

uh, where are the pics?? Is it just me or are they not here?!

ahh, gotcha! Thanks. Stunning looking car. Was in at my dealer on Sat and I've been told that my car is now week 27 build which is this week. Starting to get excited!

Car looks great !
What I am dying to know (and no doubt many others) is how is the performance pack upgrade ? In particular it would be great to know how the e diff feels on twist roads, can you feel the extra 10 BHP and how are the brakes ?
According to the test drives I have watched you can foot to the floor in sharp corners and it puts up to 100% power to the outside wheel.. would love to know how it feels from a new owner !
cheers
Andy

I'd love to know this as well but if he's flooring it round corners after 2 days of ownership I'd be very surprised. :)
-
Go on, you know you want to
-
I've already given the car a little bit of stick
The steering is very impressive, as soon as you start to build up speed and go to turn in, it really gets heavy, and when just daudling its nice and light.
Power is also very good, much better than the mk6, seems to just keep coming, and the grip is very good in the corners.
You lot won't be disappointed at all!
Dave
-
I'm really trying not to resent you a bit for getting your car so quickly while mine sits in the "Processing your order" queue, but I can't help it.
You git!
Still pretending to be happy for you though, thanks for the pics, great looking car.
-
Exciting times. I'm collecting mine later on today, this work day cannot end quick enough!!!!
It looks damn nice in black too, best of luck with it.

Rag it - those Dunlop will be shagged on the first pothole you hit (sidewall bulge) - might as well give em a bit of a wear now. Went through 3 Dunlops in my first winter with my first Scirocco for that very issue.

Also to know if you can feel the extra 10PS is going to be .... difficult. What is the benchmark to judge this? Needs a back to back test. And that test needs to be blind, or psychologically speaking you'll probably feel the 10PS just because you expect to...
Objectively speaking I doubt many of us who picked the PP would be able to tell if the car was really fitted with it or not without those painted callipers. And if you painted a non PP car the same and then sold it second hand I doubt anyone would suspect a thing.
Subjectively speaking... I ordered it anyway!
-
for everyday driving you will never see the 10bhp difference. track use you will, just...
-
Probably worth it for the bigger brakes and e-diff, for 10PS only it would be poor value for money but the whole package seems a lot more reasonable than some options. The standard XDS does work very well though - amazed at the difference it made to my scirocco just for the few times I took a roundabout at ludicrous speed to try it out (once I had activated it in VCDS, and there were 3 levels of assistance to decide between - went for the medium option) - probably gives you more confidence to take a tight bend at speed.
-
Would agree that most of the upgrades wont be noticeable.
Will be good to hear from some PP owners who have test driven the std car but I would have thought in hard cornering the e diff would be noticeable, even if the 10 BHP isnt..
Personally I would rather VW would have charged £2k for the PP upgrade but it was 25 extra BHP, the e diff and some tasty red Brembo 4 piston front brakes and maybe some half alcantara seats with adjustable side bolsters..
Guess VW is saving the best upgrades for an edition 40 !

I'd look to the new Leon Cupra to see what it has as an indication as to what the 40 edition will have under the bonnet - at least 260PS as per current Scirocco R most likely. Maybe VW are saving the better seats for that GTI.
-
I didn't originally spec the PP for my car.
Then I watched all the reviews and managed to get a really good price to add it on my order.
Glad I did as the brakes look good, and I think the diff is noticeable, need to play more though to be certain!

Dave
Just work your way up to it rather than finding out the limitations on your first go and end up going through a roundabout rather than around it. Was missed by 1/2 a second a few years ago when someone came flying over a roundabout by Tynemouth baths after bombing it down the coast road. Launched over a big and well planted roundabout, landing in a hedge on the other side - a real "Dukes of Hazzard" moment. If i'd been 1/2 a second quicker he'd have hit us.
-
I think we had a "what changes would you make" thread a while back didn't we?
IIRC it was unanimously agreed that the PP should have been 250PS (or more). I know VW would argue that their 230PS is better than the 250/260/270PS of rival cars because they can actually deliver that power to the road, plus the power band and torque aren't apparent from just quoting the max output... but still, I think it would divert much of the critisim of the GTI if it was a bit more powerful.
That said, I think most people who criticise this car do so not for any logical reason. They are often wannabes who can't afford one, or they bought an ST or Megan a year ago and want to pretend its still better than a new GTI. In that case its just easy to say "oh it is underpowered". If you take that away they'll probably just pick on the price next, "oh you can get waay better stuff for less money."

Have to say as well really like how the brake discs with the PP fill the wheels. Looks really good!!

Big wheels want big discs - the standard brakes looked lost on the GTI in Benfield with the 19"ers - adding PP could mean feeling the need to buy the bigger wheels too.

When comparing the GTI to rival cars, it is most definitely a case of 'you get what you pay for'.
-
With VW's known underestimation of power figures, I think the real difference could well be more than 10hp. I can't remember where I read it but I'm sure one reviewer pretty much said that the PP feels much more than 10hp more powerful than the standard car.

Car looks stunning mate!
-
Dave,
Can you tell me if the indicators flash in the rear clusters flash the entire width of the light clusters? I'm nearly certain they should, but having collected my GTI this evening, mine only flash on the outer part of the clusters and not on the part on the bootlid. Hopefully a minor vag com issue!
Thanks!

Ahhhh, thanks Craig, I knew it didn't look quite right! I'll have to call into them in the morning about it, hopefully it's trivial.
Aside from that, the car is the nuts!!! Love it! I'll post up more thoughts/photos later

Hi Dave,
Just a quick question
Did you find out how to turn the ADC off?
Thanks
My dealer had a demo car with ADC and they took me through all the controls before I took it for a test drive, you can disable ADC through the menu system within the instrument cluster and it had a quick access button on the indicator stalk to disable the front assist system which disables ADC, the salesman advised both methods reverts the cruise control to fixed speed.

Really is very interesting that you can disable the ADC. I wonder what the insurance implications are if heaven forbid you ever had a front end bump because you had the ADC switched off?
What were your opinions of the car on your test drive?

It was a stock 5 door manual in red, they had a carbon grey GTI in the show room without ADC but with keyless entry/start and the pro nav.
I am curious how insurance companies are going to deal with the GTIs that do not have ADC fitted.

They are a different model when you insure it "GTI Launch 220 & GTI Launch Performance 220" and different grouping.
-
ADC can be properly switched off rather than off for the journey only like the engine stop-start system is. Was surprised how smooth and unobtrusive the stop-start is on a GTD DSG - was expecting a few seconds to get going - it seemed pretty much instant to get going again after a stop, can only be smoother in a manual.
-
Joe, yes mine flash full width.
Look really good too!

Are you getting many looks when driving the new wagon about town?

Are you getting many looks when driving the new wagon about town?
I'm not sure whether this is good or bad, but I've been stopped twice in two weeks and be asked if my current Mk6 GTi is the new Golf GTi....
I'm almost certain... to the uneducated most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Having said that my candy white 6 still gets lots of admiring glances even four years on

The Mk6 is a cool car, as is my Mk5, which still turns a few heads. To be honest, I actually like the fact that "to the uneducated" the difference isn't that great. I'm only out there to please myself, nobody else. If people know enough to appreciate the differences, that's great. If not, they probably don't care about that type of car in the first place!

Oh great. So the coppers are itching to pull over a new GTI to have a poke around are they? Proper use of powers, good use of government resources and protecting civil liberties are not things they really consider important then, and can be casually ridden over on a personal whim?
Something else to look forward to eh? haha

Oh great. So the coppers are itching to pull over a new GTI to have a poke around are they? Proper use of powers, good use of government resources and protecting civil liberties are not things they really consider important then, and can be casually ridden over on a personal whim?
Something else to look forward to eh? haha
Happened to me a few times with my first Scirocco early in 09 when they were a scarce sight on the roads. Got stopped about 6 times in the first 3 months of having it. One admitted to pulling me over just to get a better look and an opinion on it that wasn't the salesman's.

Makes me somewhat pleased there will be a few of them on the roads before I get mine!

Yes it does get a lot of looks, and its not me being big headed.
Its funny because some people you can read what they are saying with jealousy, but that's maybe to do with the area I live in, others like young teen drivers, are just straight up and want to come over and have a look.
Its the DRL's and I think the red stripe on the black pearl do it more.
However I've decided to call my car Kit from know on! I've just got to grow a few more locks and look younger to fit in, but I reckon I could solve the broken Briton issue out with the Mk7 GTi.

Hi HA54SYM`
Small question, apologies if its already been answered. Is your speedo just showing mph? and is it 20,40,60 etc that are the bigger numbers?
Thanks
Also saw one of these today in my local area near my girl friends house and I was just like jaw on the floor as I drove past it. I bet you get a lot of "you lucky ...." looks

Hi HA54SYM -
Thanks for posting yr photos. Car looks stunning in black.
I put an order in last week but was really in a quandry over colour, but have decided to amend it to deep pearl black. A bit more car washing on the cards but should look crackin'.
Thanks
Dave
