This will be my last post regarding the bloody starter motor!!
Fitted a new starter, works OK in the morning when i go to work, but in the evening coming home it takes a bit longer to start then any other short trip it barely turns over at all! Next morning i try it, everything is fine....any ideas? A bad earth? Battery?
This saga has to be put to bed!

Tk it to a garage
-
Could be a number of things. Even the crank sensor. I would get it scanned if possible.
-
Ahh, damn, was hoping to avoid a garage..been to them quite a bit of late for various things. Crank sensor?? Hmm, didn't know i had one of those! (new to this stuff!)
Thanks

hi what car you got? do you mean the engine cranks over really slow when its hot? or cranks normal speed but doesn't start?
-
Get it scanned / buy a code reader before doing anything else.

Its a 97 MK3 Cabrio. The starter turns really slowly, sometimes not at all until i try again, then it fires up with zero problems. It starts in the morning no probs, but if i go on a short journey in the day (less than 2 miles) it won't start up normally 80% of the time. It's really random.

Sounds like battery to me mate. Not getting enough charge on short journey.
-
Try a bigger battery that won't get drained during the 2 mile journey. If it starts OK after the 2 miles, your current battery is not getting enough charge. Eventually, even the bigger battery will get drained so you really need to get this sorted out.

I thought that too but it doesn't make sense that overnight it seems to 'charge' itself and be fine for the morning.
I've booked it on to get a look on vag-com so will let you know what it comes up with.

I would check ignition timing as if its to far advanced it wont want to crank over properly and of course when engine gets hot and compression improves it will be even worse. did you check your charging?

You can scan mk3 ? i would get a new battery .Or better still upgrade to a mk4

Thanks for that advice mate...sounds like it could be the problem. I checked the charging - everything seems fine.

Wanted a MK1...upgrade the upgraded upgrade???? Where will it end?
