On odd occasions, when starting from cold, she revs to about 1250rpm (choke) but after a few seconds it hisses, almost like a pressure valve has released. just curious as to what it is as it doesn't do it all the time.

Get the idle control valve and give it a clean...see if it clears up.
Mines does it now and again on cold start but usually drops quickly. I need to do my valve.

Cheers boss, ill give it a try

I dont think there is an idle control valve on the 1.8t's only throttle body.
-
It will be the PCV for sure. Mine did this with a split in the small pipe from the PCV to the inlet manifold.

PCV = Pressure control valve I assume?
