Title: top mount noise on my mk3 vr6
Post by: Outlawsaffa1982 on 25 June 2013, 22:05
evening chaps,

I have just fitted Avo Gtz to my mk3 vr6 after having endless drama with Jom coilovers, anyway with the joms i used to get this Knocking/arching/rubbing/squeaking nois from the top mount, when i replaced the top mounts and refitted the joms it seemed to be fine for a few days, but the noise returned!

This prompted the purchase of the AVO's (that im over the moon with) anyway fitted the avos and a week later after having the alignment and camber sorted out, this bloody noise is back! I parked the car this evening and had a mate push down on the front of the car to see exactly where the noise was coming from, it defiantly is coming from the top mounts! when i fitted the top mounts i greased them up thinking that it may sort out the noise... could this be the fault? has anyone had this happen to them?

Please guys im going bloody mad! can someone offer some advise?
i have a video but have no idea how to upload it to my post...

Depends on brand of top mounts. If they are cheap ebay replacements then they dont last long at all. Try get lemforda or how ever you spell it.
Are they tight enough?
Put on right?

@tweed. they are plenty tight enough! and they went on the way they came off... i was thinking that it may have been the retainer cap on top of the mounting... also the top mounts are the "harder" vr6 mounts...

someone did post on FB last night that if i jack the front end up, evenly... that when i lower the car back to the ground it should settle the coilovers back into place, and hopefully void the noise! yet to give it a go, but i can kinda see the logic behind it!

If the bearings For the top mounts are put in wrong way round that can cause them to squek/creak.

The retaining nut on top of the bearings being too tight would cause premature failure. Even more so with cheaper mounts.

Yep, torque them up to the correct setting if you can, tightening to the max will put excess pressure on the bearing causing it to fail.

Ok so I was on my bed earlier having a think about how I have put the top mount assembly together... Spring retainer first, then the bearing then two nuts to secure it in place. Then the top mount bush over that then fitted to the car and the retainer plate on top with the final nut.

Is this the correct configuration or have I completely ballsed it up?
