I'm up for ticket soon and the abs light is defunct, can I just buy a blanking plate and fit it?
I'm guessing no, and that I need a new module (and nsr sensor) but here's hoping

if it's got abs the mot tester will know and fail it.
check fault code and fix the fault....

Mine got through with a CL warning light cluster with airbag light only...for the sake of a fiver give it a go.

No its needs to be functioning if it has abs and will fail if the light is either on all the time or not working at all. You really want it sorted as it quite dangerous.

In my opinion the law makes no sense as you should be able to remove the ABS as it was only an option on the car and not standard. There are models without ABS floating around such as mine which is a 97golf. However I do agree that if you do have it on your car then it needs to work. There are plenty of threads here telling you how to check the control module and even a thread (is it on here or another site?) on how to repair an ABS sensor.
Personally my next car will not have ABS. This is my own choice. I will buy a car with no ECU in it. Will have the minimum of guages and sensors as well. I will enjoy driving and my car will be a full frame car which will protect me better than any ABS, airbag, magic sensors ever could.
Funny how there is no way to test a 20 year old airbag to see if it works or not..I'm sure a lot of them wont work properly even if the airbag light does. You can remove the steering wheel and put your own on and even disable passenger airbags and the testers are ok with that. Airbags were an option as well I believe. Why the difference with ABS is not understandable..one is ok to disable the other is not... :whistle:
As far as I understand if the ABS is faulty the car reverts to braking in the same sort of way that a car without ABS does...all the wheels lock at the same time...so the brakes work and are functional...just the same as on my Golf which has discs and drum brakes....my car without ABS passes and yours does not event though yours will brake better than mine as it has discs all around...

But for most modern cars the abs does the job of what the rear load sensing valve would do on older cars so if its not functioning in the event of a lock up the car will just swap ends and crash. Thats why it can't be easily disabled and must work as it should. In regards to airbags there isn't much that can go wrong with the units, most if not all faults would be wiring within the car. If the airbags not working, it isn't going to kill you but faulty abs potentiality could.

abs was std on the gti (from about 1993) and from mid 1995 they also included the brake bias built into the system
as said if it doesn't work correctly the car could be unstable under heavy braking (even more so with weight or lowering)

Well I'm glad I don't have it on my Golf.I'll take my chances. I do have ABS on my Passat estate and it is working fine. I wish I didn't have it though. Funny how you can remove a seat and have a faulty seatbelt and pass the mot, but not for ABS.

Seatbelts are part of the test.

The rear ones aren't tested if the seats are removed or they're obstructed by a child seat for example.

Yeah I did last year. Last week when i took it in again sod all was said and nowt had changed so it's obviously just down to the testers discretion.
