Title: Annoying Rattle from Underside of Car
Post by: MK6-Fan on 23 June 2013, 14:46
For the last few months now I have been hearing a rattling sound coming from the underside of the car. It only seems to be heard when I drive below 30MPH intermitantly.

When I travel above 30MPH it's fine, no noise to be heard but it just seems to be rattling at slower speeds.

I've no idea what this noise is or where it's come from but it's a bit annoying.

The cars a 12 plate Golf Match 1.4 TSI & isn't even a year old if that's any help.

think i ve seen this before, its the heat shield around the exhaust, it vibrates / resonates and sounds like a knocking / rattle from under the car.

Try wedge or pull it away slightly and see if that fixes it.

Thanks. Glad to see that it appears to be common even though it's a pain in the arse!

I'm not very mechanical minded so don't feel confident doing what you suggested. Is it something that could be covered under warranty do you think?

Could the exhaust bracket be loose? Should I jack the car up to see?

Yeah jack the car up, the heat shield around the exhaust  attached to the car, just make sure that's no lose or wobbly, if it is, just try tac it down.

If it's not a year old yet then I'd say take it to the dealers. The exhaust itself *may* not be covered, but if the heat shield is ratting - or a weld snapped perhaps - then let them take a looksee first, else they may say "It's been fiddled with so it's not covered under the warranty!"

It might just be a stone trapped somewhere underneath.

Alot of times this happens and sounds horrendous but is nothing to worry about.

I had this also on my last car - a 60 plate Golf GT.

The exhaust heat shield was to blame

I had the same issue as was fixed under warranty. Here is the link to the original thread.

Seems like VW has found a solution to this issue that I found on the internet. It's an easy fix with a small clip that goes on the wastegate rod. I've already ordered mine from my local dealer and they easily found the part on their database.

OEM part number: 06J-145-220-A / 06J145220A

VW have issued guidance on this noise as follows...
Technical product information Transaction No.: 2021062/1
Rattling noises from engine/exhaust system Release date: 10-Jul-2009

Customer statement / workshop findings

Rattling or jarring noise from the engine compartment / exhaust system when accelerating between 2400 and 3000 rpm .

Technical background

Waste gate adjustment rod of the turbo charger rattles when accelerating.

Production change

I had the wastegate rod clip put on mine but i thought that was just the GTI? Didn't realise it affected other engines! :o

I worked at a Fiat dealership many years ago. When the Punto first came out, they used to come back in with rattling cat heat shields. Our fix was to take the car into the workshop, rip it off, wait for 1/2 hour, then tell the customer it was all fixed.

Back in the 80's when everyone wanted their car converted to run on unleaded, that job at said garage consisted of putting a sticker in the window saying "converted to run on unleaded"
