Title: Mud Flaps
Post by: Blades72 on 22 June 2013, 13:25
Unsure if to add mud flaps to my order. How much benefit do you get from them and would they spoil the overall look of the car?

That was my original feeling that they would'nt look right!

I've got them on my current GTD.  I'm not sure they make a huge amount of difference and they're a bit of a pain to keep looking good (they tend to go white; mine have some GTechniq C4 (http://gtechniq.com/shop/3s-for-cars/exterior-coatings/c4-permanent-trim-restorer/) on to try and make them presentable).

If I had a red or a white car, I wouldn't have had them fitted, as they'd stick out like a sore thumb (like the black plastic door handles on the lesser Mark 5 models).  As my car is Carbon Grey, they're aren't quite as obvious.

I originally planned in adding mudflaps - until they adjusted the prices and you now have to buy them twice for front and back.  I used the same money to add a real option to the car instead.

You can't have mudflaps on the GTI chaps - I originally specced them but its something to do with how low the car is that they can't fit them.

I think the opposite mud flaps finish the look of a car IMHO, plus they help make the car look lower. In N.Ireland if you purchase a new car with no flaps people think your a tight ass

Its annoying that they are not available for the GTI at launch but I will definitely order a set once VW start to provide them as an accessory.

Consider me one of the above!! (Choosing my words wisely!!)

It's a N. Ireland thing.

Personally I think they're a moisture/grit trap and no good can come of them. Because of the low GTI/GTD ride height, hey will have a tiny profile and will do net-to-nowt to protect the car behind.

They're also silly money - a set of 4 were £55 on the MK5 Golf, now its about that for a pair.

Mud flaps look good on a Land Rover 90.  On other vehicles...

They're plain wrong on a GTI (or any non-agricultural vehicle) IMO. Questionable benefit too, not to mention having to drill holes to attach them.

What next, a tow-bar for the cattle trailer or a set of bull bars?

I think at least one or two "discrete" holes need drilling, at least that was the case in the mk5/6.

Yeah it's like buying a cool bicycle and slapping a set of panniers on the back - ruins the look!

Any pics of a GTi with mudflaps yet? Bro wants them but can't find any pics.

There are part numbers for GTi Mud Flaps but the actual flaps have not been released yet and can not be ordered, or so I am told by my dealer
