But when I switch it off and set up my pc to use a static IP the internet stops working and it won't let me go back onto the router settings, it just says offline, so I end up resetting the router to factory settings.
Any idea? I'm getting huge drain from dhcp on my S3. Router is huawei hg533 from talktalk.

sounds like either your DNS or default gateway isn't configured properly when you switch to static IP.
turn the DHCP back on, make a note of the values it assigns to your S3, enter these in for the static IP value and switch the DHCP off.
Having your S3 set to obtain an automatic IP shouldn't drain the battery as all it should do is ask for IP get one and use it, the next time it talks to your router will be when the lease expires (set by your router) at which point it will say, can i have the same IP? yes thanks bye or, ok i'll take this instead.
Either way, configure your phone with a correct static IP and disable the DHCP, alternatively assign the S3 a static IP in the router, sometimes called address reservation.
NB if you disable the DHCP and there is noo other DHCP server on your network then you've basically broken you wifi/network, unless you plan to manually configure each device you connect to it.

Cheers mate. I've got the phone's IP address reserved already, and I've got DHCP lease on permanent, but still getting silly wifi drains from it. I'll try turning DHCP back on in the phone's wifi settings, see if it works again.

Why do you think it's anything related to obtaining an IP address via DHCP causing battery drains? If it constantly says it's now connected to your router (and don't have this problem else where) it's probably an issue with the router rather than the phone. Try by restarting the router / leave it off for a while if it gets hot and stick a fan on to keep it cool. how old is the router anyway?
