is there only 1 type of starter motor for the 8V GTI's or are they many types?

my guess is that there is a bosch and a valeo version of it which are not compatible with each other.  most likely each type is the same for all 1.8 & 2.0 8v engines though.

I had a bit of a nightmare with mine but finally got the right part...have a look at this Bosch list to see if it helps!
