I've ordered a Pure White GTD and am seriously thinking about changing the colour to Carbon Grey. Went for white mainly because I don't have a garage and the car is on the main road at night all year round. White hides the majority of swirls and scratches where as the metallic grey would show every mark. Problem is though I really like the carbon grey and am seriously tempted but I know it will mean being even more ocd than with the white. Any advice?

I think about the same thing for DBP every 2nd day lol.
I saw a standard golf in DBP at night at a petrol station and colour looked very classy. Then I saw a candy white Golf R which looked nice too. It's a tough one.
-
No don't do it. Nooooooooo...!
Sorry, overreacted there a little bit. It is a tough one, which colour do you think would be better with the GTD highlights? I'm leaning towards saying the carbon grey. However I do think the white will have everything else beat nine situations out of ten.
-
Only two colours i seriously considered were white and carbon, i must say the GTD looks better in it than the GTI imo but as Bear says, which one could you live with?? I'm quite OCD when it comes to the car but i think the grey would've drove me nuts!! :D
-
I've not seen a carbon grey one but I saw a red one in the flesh today and although nice it didn't really do anything for me. The darker colours really mask the black 'fins' on the bumper which makes the car stand out more.

There are some good pictures for Carbon Grey GTD on Auto Scout

Red calipers, WTF? Talk about an identity complex! ::)
-
Yes I thought the GTD was getting grey callipers
-
I'm sticking with white after seeing those autoscout pics. it still just blends in to nothingness.
-
Those autoscout pics are quite dark. You need to see one out of the showroom. The grey will be almost as difficult to keep clean as DBP, and as mentioned before, a colour that has contrast with the fins and other features makes the GTI/GTD stand out immediately from the rest of the Golf range.
-
Imo the grey makes the car look more expensive and upmarket. Whites everywere and so last year.
Ps notice your in sunderland in that case I would say the grey for sure as up here we are flooded with the mk6 in white there everywere! and as the mk7 is sort of cheaper in real terms I expect a flood of white ones coming soon.
-
McMaddy why the hell did you post this thread
I'm suffering the same dilemma myself.
Overall I think white is the perfect contrast to the black, chrome and grey detailing on the GTD.
However, as Snoopy said, white might (and is) becoming too common for my liking. So, the Carbon Grey is the next best and looks very, very classy.
As many have said on this forum, colour is the hardest decision to make!
-
I've got a Carbon Grey Mark 6 and whilst it's a lovely colour and the car does look great (when clean), it does show stone chips and scratches rather easily. My car's bonnet is a complete mess, and it really could do with being resprayed. And this is with me taking good care of the car, cleaning it every two weeks, using the two bucket method, etc.
If I were going to change to a Mark 7, I would probably get a Pure White. Sure, it's as common as muck, but it really does flatter the car like no other colour (with the possible exception of uber-expensive Oryx White).
-
I don't think this thread is going to help you much in your decision
For a GTD I personally prefer the Carbon Grey. I wouldn't worry about washing / swirls etc., but just go with your heart on the colour.
I've currently got a metallic Daytona Grey Audi and Mrs G has a white Astra. Both are much much better at hiding swirls / light scratches than my previous black (DPB) GTi's. Having said that Carbon Black is a bit darker than Audi Daytona Grey.

I've ordered pure white for my GTI. I have no regrets on that decision despite white being done to death and white cars are everywhere right now. The GTI just looks so right in white.
I've even gone for the 3 door despite the fact a 5 door would be more suitable for my needs. I just like the detailing on the 3 door and its coupe-ish looks.
I know I'll probably regret both in the long run but I don't tend to keep cars long so will just live for the day.
Besides I'm in mid-life crisis so have a good excuse...
HOWEVER the Carbon is the exclusive GTI and GTD colour and I just think the GTD looks so good in Carbon to go with the grey accents.
So, if I had my sensible head on and maybe if I'd have had my sensible head on when I ordered then it would be a Carbon GTD as the thinking man's (or woman's) Golf.
Next time round for me maybe...

, a colour that has contrast with the fins and other features makes the GTI/GTD stand out immediately from the rest of the Golf range.
I agree, but unfortunately VW see fit to only offer Red or White (maybe silver too) to achieve this in the UK.

Interesting debate to which there is no real answer. Having had just about every colour going I can honestly say white is about the easiest colour to maintain over the long term as it doesn't show swirl marks, fade and is easy to touch up. This combined with the Golf looking good in white makes a very strong case, hence it's popularity.
So why have I choosen Carbon Grey? Well my other car is an UP! in Pure White and I don't want two cars the same colour, plus if it's wet or just a pop down to Tescos I'll use the Up! I aways wash any car down if it's been wet before I put it in the garage as it's much easier that way and I can't stand going into the garage and seeing a dirty car.
I think these are the best two colours for the GTI & GTD and you can't go wrong with either.
-
If you want an easier to maintain car than looks more sporty, go for white. If you want more of a discreet blander (classy in some eyes) look that is more difficult to maintain, go for carbon. With those 2 choices, it would be white for me every time. All IMHO of course!

These are the best pics of a GTI in Carbon Grey I can find:

These pictures although make this colour in my opinion, the best colour choice, are not really a true reflection of how it would look in everyday use in British weather. They've been taken in the best lighting and from perfect angles.

Colour aside, doesn't that car look odd without tints?

Didn't notice that before. Good spot! Still looks good though :)

I'm sticking with white and then when I move house I'll think about the next car and colour
-
This weekend I have seen pretty much every colour except the two silvers all in more door, surprise was the night blue which is rather nice and onyx white has something about it and carbon grey just does not disappoint
Carbon grey is pretty difficult to photograph but is easy to keep on top of than dpb, I have oth colours on the drive and mrs w will be going carbon grey on the mk7
Also got some proper German brochures for GTD and GTI which give pretty good colour indication on the swatches
I just love the details on the car, especially front fogs

Same, I don't think CSG suits the GTI with its red accents. Looks much better on the GTD, but even then, as a secondary choice for me too, it's actually way down there relatively speaking!
