Title: Buying second hand?
Post by: stealthwolf on 15 June 2013, 16:32
Heart says 7D
Head says 60D (or maybe 70D when it's out)
Wallet says £1000 max.

I know the 7D is getting old now but prices are still £1000 for just the body. I was looking at secondhand deals on ebay but wondering whether it's worth going for. I've seen 7D cameras looking in excellent/near mint condition for £600-700 for just the body. This could leave approx £400 for a decent lens.

Alternatively, I could just go for a brand new 60D where the body is £600.

What do you think?

What do you think?

What's your current camera?
How much of a jump will it be if you go straight for the 7D?

The 7D and 60D (and 600D/650D/700D) have the same sensor, so the only real difference is that the 7D has a faster processor, meaning you can shoot more photos before you fill the buffer. The only other difference is that the 7D has weather proofing and a metal body (meaning it's stonger and heavier).

The 60D is currently on offer a lot lower than £600. And I would personally go for a brand new 60D over a s/h 7D, unless you need the weather proofing and metal body.

Canon 60D body for £465 (http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-60d-camera-body-554-p.asp) (plus £10 deliver)
Canon 60D body for £469 (http://www.onestop-digital.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=33273) (free delivery)

Then you can spend the other £500 of your budget on some nice glass

The 60D is going to be replaced by the 70D towards the end of the year, but that will depend on when Canon run out of stock of the 60D.
So, 7D will eat your £1000 budget, 60D will give you almost the same quality but in a lighter cheaper package (and leave change) or wait for the 70D which will probably be about £800, but probably wont be £300 better than a 60D.

My vote: 60D. Tempted by one myself at £465 (which is about the price of a used one on ebay)

Currently running around with a powershot G12. Whilst it's great for learning composition and getting used to manual/Av/Tv control, I just find it too limiting to achieve certain photos/technique.

I've read about HDEW earlier today but turns out they're like digitalrev et al which are all grey imports. Only concerns are around warranty. They have the 7D for £700 which would mean I could avoid the ebay issue. Have you or anyone else used the likes of HDEW?

I bought a 5D MkII from Gumtree about a month ago for £900.

My 50mm 1.8II was about £75.

Worth noting that the links posted by DubFan are items that are grey imports. So canon would just laugh at you if you wanted to make a warranty claim. You may also get stung for import tax (although highly unlikely).

Have you looked at Canons refurbs on ebay? Some good deals to be had (UK) 7d for £700

I have to admit I have had a 450D then 7D and now a 5D mk3, I was never really that impressed with the 7D (pants ISO) and though my 450D took better pictures have you consider the 650D? It can focus in video which is the only Canon to do that (apart from the really expensive 1D I think and maybe the 700D).

I wouldn't be able to make a warranty claim if I bought secondhand which is why I was considering grey imports. The concern is whether authorised repairers would repair them.

The 7D is more of a desirable thing. The 60D is adequate for me. I'm not into movie making so mainly stills - landscape/nature/cars would be what I'd photograph.

I'd consider the 7d just for how solid it is.

Its true it is a well put together camera, I sold mind for £715 second hand and it had taken maybe 4000 photos and was immaculate. Provided its been looked after there should be no issue buying second hand.

I got a refurb model for £700 direct from Canon. When put with the 60d it makes the 60d look like a toy. I also didn't like the buttons/controls on the 60d.

Where did you buy it from? There's a canon outlet on egay but that's all I could see.

That's where mine came from. Was in as new condition and  in retail box as well.

I'll keep an eye out on that website. Am tempted to get a 60D now and then wait for the new 7D MKii which will probably be out next year or the year after. Would allow me to get used to dSLRs in the meantime. What do you guys think?

You could keep on waiting and waiting!

I'd go and play with a 60D and 7d and see how you get on.

Or go for an older 50d and have lots of dosh for some nice glass.

All of this.  Also get on talkphotography and post some stuff, talk to some people so you have some posts and after a couple of months the classifieds will open up to you and they are definitely worth it.  It's where my 5D2 and 24-70 F2.8L came from.

Buying from enthusiasts is definitely better than buying from ebay.

Also don't sweat the repair work on bodies and lenses - shutter mech replacement on 5D2 = £200ish.

SLRs aren't like most consumer electronics - you don't throw them away when they go wrong!

Awesome. I don't know many photography forums - there's POTN and dpreview, and I'm signed up to digital photography school.

I've read about flashcameras.co.uk as well which I believe is kerso off talkphotography? Had a look at getting a 60D from his website for £510.

Having researched a little on lenses, it seems more difficult to choose the right glass than choosing a camera!

If you're buying a crop body then 17-55mm F2.8 us going to be the kiddie for you.

Definitely what I'd pick up if I was going to remain on crop.

Any thoughts on the 24-105mm?

Any thoughts on the 24-105mm?
The L series 24-105mm F4 ?

Very good lens. But 24mm on a crop sensor isn't that wide, not in comparison to a 17/18mm on a 17-55mm.
Also F4 on a crop sensor isn't going to give you very good low light capabilities. But if you also get something like a 35mm or 50mm f1.8 prime, then you'd have that covered.

I have a mate with a 7D who uses a 24-105 as his main walkabout lens.  Loves it.  Guess it's what you're used to.  I used the 10-22mm lens on my 500D most of the time and loved the width on it.

But if you also get something like a 35mm or 50mm f1.8 prime, then you'd have that covered.

35mm is going to be a lot more usable.

Awesomeness. The 35mm was what I was looking at (35x1.6=56mm) for a "nifty fifty" at some point.

Fair enough.

50mm on a crop gives you something closer to the classic portrait length (50x1.6 =80). But the 24-105 would have that covered (albeit without the low f-stop). My old 28-70 f2.8 was good for portraits, but on a crop sensor I missed the width.
But as said, it depends what you're used to. I've had a 50mm prime on my crop sensor for a couple of years and am used to it, but I recently got a 35mm prime (vintage m42) and it's taking a bit to get used to the width.

It also depends on what you're shooting. In some senses it's actually good to get a kit with a lens or two and then work out what you're shooting more of and what the limitations are of the kit you have.

On another note, if you were looking at HDEW for your new camera, read their FAQ:
http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/store-policiesfaq-2-w.asp (http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/store-policiesfaq-2-w.asp)

Quote
"Are all products guaranteed for UK repair"

Yes. All products can be repaired in the UK. The guarentee covers mechanical faults parts and labour. Please note accidental damage or misuse is not covered by the guarentee. If a product purchased from us develops a fault give us a call and we can give you the instructions for the appropriate repair centres.

 Product Guarantee

All products come with a standard 1-year manufacturers warranty based on the sales invoice you receive with the product. All you need is to keep the invoice.

In addition we supply an extended cover to allow you to have the product repaired for a further 2 years (3 year guarentee in total). You need to keep the sales invoice and the Xtendcover card, which comes with the product.

Please note many but not all of our offers include the extended guarantee. This is clearly indicated in the titles of the products or bundles for sale. (Extended warranties are only placed on Camera or Camcorder units not Accessories or Lenses)

Naturally if the product is delivered with a fault then a replacement will be supplied.

For a £500 camera I would be happy with that. If you were spending £3k on a new 5D3 and L glass, then maybe you'd want a non grey import.
