Title: Modifications to 1.4 - advise!
Post by: Cadillac524 on 13 June 2013, 21:35
I've had my 1.4 golf for a year now and have recently done a few modifications to it including:
GTi front and rear lights,
Smoked fog + ind unit,
Gas bonnet struts,
Blacked out the grill and badge,
colour coded the plastic on the side of the car.
I do have a GTi spoiler to put back on as well as some coilovers.
I am aware I should get some alloys for the car and put it back on coilovers, but I am unsure of anything else to do to it without making it look silly!.. It's only a 1.4!
Can anybody help me with any other ideas, and what wheels might look good on this car, did think about the BBS's put on a mk2 GTi as those are 4x100 like mine.

Also, the fog lights are not wired in; I have bought the switch panel for the cabin but do I need to buy the entire headlight loom or can I still use my own, finding the correct pins and wiring it that way?

Positives and negatives on the car are much appreciated!

you need the loom for the fogs mate, just the part the has the indicators and horn etc on, its plugs in on top of the radiator

As for looking silly, why would it, get it on its ass with some alloys and its all good

Dont need to be a GTI to look cool

Ah that's a shame that I need to buy the loom, I was hoping with the missing pins in the block connector that you described above the rad,  could be used and save me some money :/

Look in the dub rides section for some good inspiration, lots of nice 3's on here.
A few ideas-

Vr6 deep front splitter
Colour coded mirror caps
4x100 alloys (16s look best imo)
New plates, pressed metal or shiny new Perspex it's your choice.
Service
Proper Detail
Gti / vr6 leather / colour concept recaro / cloth recaro (quite hard to find) interior
Lupo / polo 6n2 / 3.5 cab steering wheel (gear knob fits too with slight modification)
Retrofit electrics (windows/central locking etc)
Lower glovebox instead of cubby hole
Coilovers / spring setup
Headlight Bulb upgrade
GTi 2-slat grill
Refresh any tired looking details e.g. Gearstick / handbrake gaitor, exterior badges etc
Polo 6n engine covers can be retrofitted
Aero wiper conversion, front and rear
Check for rot in the usual places and reseal if possible
Head unit / speaker upgrade
Any hard to find mk3 parts are always good (Anniversary / US spec parts etc)
The front badge can be dismantled and the cream background sprayed any colour you like

All these are easy to do, and not particularly expensive for the most part.
Should keep you busy for a few weekends!

Conversion from rear drums to rear disc brakes (if it isn't already brake discs). Bigger (288 or 280 mm) brake rotors on front. Black brake calipers

Not really digging the bonnet bra. Wheels look good, but I think I might prefer a darker color :)

It's all fair comments, not many people like the bonnet bra, and the rear badge is more of a gimmic only just put it on.. Won't be on for very long.

I'm tempted to leave it high as it looks quite funny.. Almost rally car like. Unsure on leaving high or going low again?!
