I've recently noticed there's a strange noise coming from the engine somewhere when I start the car from cold. The only way I can describe it is like a piece of carboard being put into a fan when it's turning. The noise is not loud and I've not got an idea where it's coming from atall, but I shall do some investigating when the weather is not sh!t.
But can anybody give me some idea what to check when I'm having a snoop around.
Thanks

if its AUM maybe secondary air pump
-
It's an agu mate
-
It might be a loose belt :undecided:
-
Starter motor?
-
Nah it's definitely not the starter motor, as I've already got the goose in my starter motor LOL.
I started it this morning and didn't notice anything
-
So you have a symphony of sounds when your car starts.
I am currently enjoying a screeching sound when starting from cold for around 5 minutes that is due to the non genuine aux belt tensioner.
I would check that out, as soon as you have started the car, place a spanner on the notch used to de-tension the belt and move it slightly either way and check for change in noise. Be careful though, fast moving belts and pulleys tend to rip off things that get trapped in them.

cardboard in a fan sound - is there some cardboard in the radiator fan

Hi again,
Just wanted to let you know of the recent noose with this car. When I start it up first thing in the morning the sound is like a hundred locusts lol. Any ideas as after 5 minutes it clears and goes away
-
May be the oil taking time to get up the engine when cold.. so sounds tapety an noisey until it warms up and gets around.. take it when its warm it ok?
My 4mo did this when it was snowing :undecided:
-
Think, i have the same noise. sounds like air, but goes away after 45 secs or so.
-
I havnt noticed it when it's warm but it's kind of annoying
-
not the charcoal discharge valve by any chance is it?..

not the charcoal discharge valve by any chance is it?..
Aint that a ticking noise
-
I've had a listen to the charcoal canister and it doesn't seem to be that. I havnt got a clue where it's coming from though . Sounds around the engine area though, rather than the sides of the engine area
-
Does it get faster/louder when you rev the engine?
-
I listened tomines today. After a min, i heard like a valve closing and the noise stopped. From wot other people have said, thinking its for the air pump, in such works for the cat if that is correct?
Post a vodeo and i will tell, of its the same as mines.
-
deans is an agu, so that doesn't have an air pump?.. also odd, I think its a 52 plate :undecided:
-
Jamie, mines a 1999 mate not 2002
-
ah right mate, could have sworn it was a 52 plate when I called up yours.. no wonder
-
now, come to think of it. my dad had a similar issue to this, happened regardless to wether it was hot or cold though..
turned out it was an idler pulley.
-
Is this a big deal as I'm not familiar with this
-
it can be mate, yes. it`s part of the cambelt assembly. if it fails completely the results could be catastrophic to your engine. it`s best you narrow your search down to actually find the noise. it might not even be the idler pulley.
-
No in Cardiff anytime soon are you mate
-
lol, unfortunately not mate.
