Could i have some help and Advice in prep for my Gti please guys, In my mk6 i listen to all my music off a usb stick in the armrest, now in the Gti will it be the same or am i reading correct that it will be Sd card now?
I would like to prepare all my music files , get them off my mac and onto a card ready..
-
Can use SD card... But I'll still use the MDI and plug my iPod in!
-
If you get the Pro Nav you can do almost anything you want!
Can stream by BT, use the SD card slots (probably best), transfer to the SSD, and there is a USB connection for an external HDD (I was told by dealer) or flash drive. There is also an Aux-in.
Lots of choices.
-
Can you use .m3u playlists for the stereo to play on SD card?
Using iPod at the min in MK6 but have a bit of trouble at times with the ipod needing reset and will ditch iPod in MK7
-
iPhone for me (guess ill have to invest in a lighting adaptor). Will try the sd slot too to see if that effects the clarity, but I shouldn't of thought so.

I will be using my iPhone. Does anybody know / have any experience using Spotify?! Will it work and will it give me album art?

I was unable to get it to work with the audi BT in the new a3.

I use spotify in my Mk6 and it works pretty well. I can flick back and forward between tracks and the sound quality is good but I don't think artwork shows up. I also have a funny problem where I can't actually see how far into a track I am - it will give me completely random numbers for time elapsed and left on the track. Easy to stick a playlist on though and I can skip any songs I don't like :-)
I assume it'll be the same/improved in the new car.
-
If you cant see how long a track is it means you have too high a bit rate. Ive got it on most of my tracks which are 320 bit rate. They dont need to be that high, 192 is high enough , but thats how i got them. Not sure if the new units will take higher but rates?

Balls. This sounds annoying! There must be a way around it, unfortunately I am not a tech person so I think some googling/youtube is in order!

Or variable bitrate (VBR) tracks - my RCD510 does not know how long a VBR track is.
Keep an eye out on places like "Hotukdeals" for decent deals on SD cards. I got a 64Gb class 10/UHC XCSD Sandisc card for £23 (for my camera) at a time they were going for about £70. Should be able to get an ample 32Gb card of a reputable make for £17-20 if you shop around.
The capacity recognition for the Audio unit in a Golf will probably be HC-SD (32Gb max) rather than XC-SD I would expect, so going beyond 32Gb will probably be a waste of money.

This is good info, ta.

Amazon periodically has large discounts too. I often dump things like this in my "basket" then log in once a day. If they drop in price you get a little "item you have in your basket has changed in price" message. Got 2x 64GB SD cards for £35 about a year back IIRC.
Anyway, I was looking for the Discover Pro Nav Manual but couldn't find it (anyone manage to?), but I did come across a link to a skoda nav unit that looks very very similar... i.e. probably its the same.
http://ws.skoda-auto.com/OwnersManualService/Data/en/Octavia_5E/11-2012/Navigation/Columbus/A7_Octavia_Columbus_InfotainmentNavigation.pdf
(EDIT: anyone able to confirm if the Skoda Columbus is the same as the VW Pro Nav?)
From page 23 the compatible formats are:
SD, SDHC, SDXC

or you can set an amazon price alert using http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/ to get an email when something drops below your 'desired' price

Awesome!

SDXC? The sky's the limit for stored tracks then. I currently have thousands of tracks on a 16Gb USB stick and it is nowhere near full.

I've never used an SD card to store music so can anyone recommend which one to go for?

I would stick with Sandisk, Samsung or Kingston for reliability.
-
The RNS 510 had a 2GB limit on SD cards. Do the new units in the MK7 allow larger SD cards?

Hopefully if someone can confirm if the Skoda info is valid! Actually I might ping my dealer an email and see if they can get hold of the Nav units manuals on pdf. Ifs bloody stupid of VW not to post their user manuals online when many other brands do just that.

I've got a pair of SanDisk Ultra SDXC 64GB cards. No complaints. Need to confirm if they will work on the Golf or not.

The max capacity of the device is defo an issue. On the mk 6 GTI I used to play music off a USB and it would only recognise a certain number of playlists - was highly annoying, hope this has been fixed!

I'm asking my dealer about the SD card spec and capacity for all radio/nav options. I'll ask about USB too. When I had a test drive I'm pretty sure the dealer said you can connect an external HDD with no mention of a maximum allowed capacity. However, I never trust what they say until I've seen it written in an official looking document like a manual!

LOL do you really think the dealer will have a bulls clue what SD cards are compatible?!

RNS was able to take 32gb cards

I don't know what you mean? If you are asking if I think the dealer has clairvoyance or omniscience and can somehow pluck this information from thin air then, no of course I don't. If you are asking if I think they can look it up in some technical manual describing the system (like say the Skoda one I posted the link to earlier) then, yes I do.
Will I be accepting an answer not backed up by a technical document? No, I'm not an idiot.

My point was simply that dealers tend not to have a clue about details like this and you are better off reading the manual yourself.

I agree, and I asked for the manual. As might have been guessed by both of us I was sent a "brochure" instead of the actual manual. I'm going to keep trying since it seems you only get what you want with a dealer after you've asked the same question over and over until you are blue in the face.
Also it seems VW charge for their manuals (daylight robbery!) so they probably won't send me one by email. That actually makes me angry! Who on earth charges for a PDF of a user manual?? Assholes.
-
Who needs music anyway? Just find a nice tunnel, wind down the windows and put your foot down!
Music to my ears

Joe,
You're right about the dealers being clueless. Here are the mistakes mine has just made in the last 10 minutes:
1) Emailed me with useless brochure when I asked for the manual
2) Ignored that I asked about Radio, 5.8 inch Nav and Pro Nav and just responded about the "unit you have ordered"
3) Claimed SD cards come with the nav unit
4) Claimed they were mistaken, SD cards do not come with the 8 inch unit (but implied they think they are included with the 5.8 inch unit, wtf?)
5) Sent me link to VW website with no information about SD cards whatsoever
6) Called me "Mr Edwards" (that is not my name!)
I've reiterated my question is about removable SD cards for playing music etc, that they come in various formats and its important to know what is compatible, and asked that the dealer contact VW for a definitive answer.
Grrr... getting a straight answer is like pulling teeth! I'm gonna get one though!!

Look on the bright side Mr Edwards, at least they got your gender right

On the subject of music format options,I recall seeing posts on the MK6 forum about sound quality and how the
best QUALITY sound is still from a CD as it isnt compressed.I love my RCD 510 with its 6 disc changer and still only
play CD's but I did borrow a usb stick once and downloaded some tracks I also had on cd and you could tell the difference (I have Dynaudio) playing them one after the other, the cd having a less harsh tone compared to playing
the same track via the usb stick.
As I will probably be changing to a MK7 at some point, and it only has a single cd in the glovebox, what is
best format of all the various options for sound quality ?
-
Well I don't know if this helps, but I pulled a couple of my SDHC 32Gb Sandisk cards from the Scirocco that I use for the RNS-510, and tried them in the dealers GTI with the Discover Nav Pro, and they worked great. All album art displayed and all tracks on both cards immediately accessible.

If you are playing via SD card, or USB, or USB HDD (if true you can do that) then can you not choose the level of compression you put on those storage devices? I'm not too familiar with MP3 or if other options can be read by the Nav unit...

What's the best way to organize music on an SD card for trawling through songs on the move? In folders according to artist / album?
Is there a freebie program out there that does all this tagging effortlessly for you? Otherwise its a pretty tedious task!

I think we need the manual. Or we can assume its the same as the mk6?
I posted the Skoda Nav manual earlier, I strongly suspect it is the same as the Pro Nav unit. The A1 video someone posted shows how they did it too, though not the folder structure.

The most efficient way of scrolling through minimal menus is probably Artist>Album>Tracks (if you have tons of stuff and like a lot of varied types of music then maybe do Genre>Artist>Album>Tracks) , although compilation albums could be maybe all together like Compilations>Album>Track.

My dealer sent me an extract of the Discover Nav Pro Manual... or at least that is what I think it is. She got it from VW after I requested some info on the SD card format compatibility and so forth, but the page also talks about CDs and playlist files and formats and so on and so forth...
Unfortunately that is all I got. Since they charge for these manuals (tight ) I think I was lucky to see the actual page at all!
-
Looks like it will play apple / itunes formats, excellent. No format conversions needed.
-
The SD card info is right there: 2GB limit on a standard SD card, 32 on an SDHC and 2Tb on an SDXC card (going beyond 64Gb is prohibitively expensive, but 64Gb is a hell of a lot of music, even for MP3s at a high bitrate encoding). Maximum 4 partitions. Get an SDHC or a SDXC and you're laughing.
-
Yes I asked the dealer as I have an SDXC 64gb I wanted to chech was compatible. Thought you guys might like to see the info too.
