I know there's a lot of depressing talk on here, to do with delivery times, failed promises etc (and I'm as guilty as anyone), but in an attempt to lighten the mood, when the car does eventually arrive, what are your plans for it (if any), apart for driving it ?
Mine so far as below:
Full detail, finishing off with Werkstat Prime, Actrlic Trigger and Glos.
Aerospace fabric protector on all the interior cloth surfaces (seats mats etc)
Update my Discover Nav Pro with my personal POI's (speed cams etc) - already prepared ready to go
Update the Gracenote database.
Look into fitting door open lights in place of the door reflectors at the bottom edge, like I've done to my current scirocco (need to see if the door modules support the coding of these).
Sort out the coming home lights to stay on properly rather than having to flash the main beam stalk.
Rubber mats to go over the cloth ones for winter and wet weather.
LED footwell and boot light bulbs (already have)
I'm sure there will be more when the car arrives, but that's it for now. You have any plans ?
-
First things first, it will get a full detail followed swiftly by a new set of these:
http://www.golfgti.bigcartel.com/product/golfgti-co-uk-logo-stickers (http://www.golfgti.bigcartel.com/product/golfgti-co-uk-logo-stickers). 8)
Might fit a new rabbit logo next to the GTI badge like i've got on my 6?
Doesn't it already have have LED footwell lights? Not sure about the boot though??

Ill be getting myself one of these for starters

Music is ready, already! sitting on an SD Card in draw with all tags and covers set (will update at time but be minimal as hate new music for most part and generally live in past!) + Have all the UK DAB Logo just in case they have to be added manually to favourite stations as do listen to radio maybe 70% of time when driving so nice to have them looking right also.
Clean Wax and Protect (Rarely clean so this really helps when do go do a quick wash)
Change Tax Disc Holder
Not sure how change them coming home lights but if something can do self will likely follow suit on that one.
Aside from that drive and enjoy :)

Hi Norbreck21a I'm a newbie and have not owned a GTI for several years. I am interested in your intentions re detailing and interior protection. As I have no experience if these products I wonder if you can point me in the right direction for reasonably priced detailing and suppliers of the interior fabric protection products you mention. I live in the East Midlands .On order GTI DSG,carbon grey, PP, ACC ,Park assist. with little prospect of seeing it this side of November judging by the general pessimism of other forum members!
-
jrc193: Not sure if it's allowed to get websites out on here (if not, mods please remove).
Basically most of my detailing stuff tends to come from one of two places.
Clean Your Car - http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/ or
The Polished Bliss - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/
Between the pair of them, they pretty much cover 99% of your detailed and cleaning needs. Be aware though, once you start purchasing products it's a slippery slope, and you find yourself "needing" more and more
Mines a White GTD on order (like my Rocco), so waxes are less useful for these white colours (and can indeed turn the white a bit yellowish over time), so a sealant is preferred hence why I use the Werkstat set of products, fantastically easy to use and apply.
However on Carbon Grey, I would probably recommend a good polish followed by your choice of LSP (Last surface product). The polish corrects the paintwork (gets rid of scratches and swirls), and the Wax adds gloss and protection from the elements. I've used Autofinesse Tripple on my wife's Flash Red Polo with superb results, and that's an all in one product, so might be a good idea to start there ?
As for the fabric protection, well there's a number of products on the market, but I've always had good results from Aerospace 303 Fabric Protector (not available unfortunately from either of the above)

Oh yes, and I forgot. I'll also be checking the dates of the Nav Map data (as typically these are not always the latest version when shipped), and as our Golf's come with 3 years free Map updates, I'll be making sure mine is as up to date as possible.

What's you plans for the GTI/GTD when it arrives
Drive the **** out of it.
-
I'll be whipping off the nasty plastic number plates the dealer fits and getting a set of pressed metal ones.
And the usual proper wash / sealant as per everyone else.
And drive it like its meant to be driven
-
I'd like to get a couple of key covers for the GTD to protect them from scratches etc, as I've ordered keyless entry so they'll be spending most of their life in a pocket or bag.
I have these below on my current Rocco keys , and its kept the keys in mint condition with no scratches whatsoever, however I believe the MK7 keys are a different shape. Anyone know where (of if) MK7 versions are available from ?

Good idea, lets break out the optimism!
Sort out the coming home lights to stay on properly rather than having to flash the main beam stalk.
Can you explain this one though? What are coming home lights and what are you doing to them?
-
On the mk5, the lights would stay on for 10-20 seconds after you lock the car.
They changed it in the mk6, you have to flick the main beam before you exit the car, something I personally never remember or bother to do.
With a bit of vag com coding you can set it to how it works in the mk5.

Cool, thanks. Is there a repository somewhere that tells you all about the code? Seems like a lot of stuff has been mentioned that you can alter like this, is there a website dedicated to that kind of thing?
-
This thread gives some idea as to what can be coded but some of the things that you could code on the mk6 are standard on the 7, like dial staging:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=154971.0
-
Does anyone know what is standard from that list on MK 7 and is all this equal on GTI and GTD or does GTI get some preferential? Like the dial staging :)

Cheers James. From that thread it seems like you need a cable and some software. Is that something you can download for free? (EDIT: seems like it costs £220!!! Ouch) (EDIT2: that's excluding VAT... FFS)
Also seems like some people have modified the MFD output, but it wasn't quite clear if you could make it show some combination of values, say speed, fuel consumption and range, or only pre determined outputs that VW made but may not show by default. Has anyone done something like this?
-
What's you plans for the GTI/GTD when it arrives: put in my order for MK8, i'm sure it'll be announced by then.

Tax disc holder for £17.99
Ill be driving home first, then ill sit on the driveway and sort out the Dynaudio and set it up with my tunes and my phone. Once that's sorted I'll be driving down to the missus' work to show her. Then I'll drive home and have a play some more.
Lunch.
Ill then go for another drive, then return home, have a cuppa, then pick the little 'un up from nursery. Then in the eve ill nip round my mum & dads to show it off (yes, even at 37 I have to show them!)
All in all I should rack up 100 - 150 miles at least thus breaking the car in a little.
Can't wait!!

Don't worry, I'm the same age and ill be doing exactly the same thing minus child

Haha, has to be done eh!!

Remove dealer sticker from rear window, carefully.

Oh crap, I forgot about that. They better not be writing their name beneath the GTI logo either (like Vindis seem to do) or putting a big website URL on the number plate either!
Think I'll have to email them when the car is in transit specifically instructing them not to do any of these things... If they want advertising on my car they can pay me a monthly fee like anyone else would have to. I'll make the rates prohibitive of course!
-
My current GTD still carries a large URL in sticky letters on both side windows. I never bothered to remove it on the grounds that there would probably be at least one letter that would be impossible to remove.

Exactly, ill be making it clear I don't want any advertising what so ever and that includes on my private plates

Perhaps if they write a URL or something on the car I will pay with a cheque that has my we address of choice scrawled all over it. I'll offer to issue them a cash-able version as soon as they remove their web addresses from my car!
-
I'm going to take my GTD and my missus to the local dogging spot
Then I'm going to be the getaway driver for a big bank job.
-
Probably be time to fit some winter tyres or snow chains with the way things are going!
-
Do many of you change the tax disk holder?
-
Always, for one of these:

Plain, simple, no engraving.
-
Do many of you change the tax disk holder?
I do but its only because I dont like giving free advertisement for garages.
Thats why I also remove the back window sticker asap
I currently have the forum tax disc holders on my cars.

Hi, new to VW and found this thread really useful and interesting, couple of questions...
mjh_056 - I'm new to VW - wondered if you could tell me where i can get the logos for the DAB Radio from?
&
Norbreck21a - what LED lamps do you need for the footwells and boot?
-
Do a search Allya, I posted about this, with a link, a while back (cant remember the name of the thread!) All ready got mine ready to be loaded on, is a very nice feature.

These look brilliant... where did you come across them Norbeck21a?
-
Think it was Fleabay about 2 1/2 years ago when i purchased the Rocco.
-
Few different ones on Amazon (looks like none for new key design yet)

-
I think they look the part, and are bound to protect the key from scores and scrapes...
If you happen to see one for mk7 key post it up here
thanks
-
